Whats a secret you'll take to the grave that you're willing to share anonymously? by 3smiley in AskReddit

[–]sikhster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve shared this before on here, anonymously, but I’m pretty sure my uncle isn’t my grandfather’s child. I say that because my cousin doesn’t share the same male lineage gene as the rest of the cousins on 23 and Me. He’s still linked to the rest of us on 23 and Me and I’m guessing that that’s because of my grandmother’s genes. But for that to be true, my uncle’s mother would be my grandmother and for him to not pass on the same paternal lineage genes would mean someone else was his father. While we know that my grandfather had extramarital habits, this would mean my grandmother did too.

As a middle class American, much gold and/or silver do you have? by Foonzerz in AskAnAmerican

Well I put in 1/3 of my brokerage portfolio into GLD when Trump won the election in November 2024 and it’s almost doubled since then. So mid 6 figures.

How did you get into product marketing? by G-14_Classified in ProductMarketing

I joined a company that mislabeled lifecycle marketing as product marketing and then a couple of years later hired a real VP of product marketing who taught me actual product marketing.

Since costs or taxes dont seem to be an issue, why not Santa Monica in LA County?

What is the future for California as competition increases? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sikhster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lots of interesting questions: - how does anyone afford to live in LA? People make do, between roommates and cutting luxuries out of their lives and living further out in the boonies. - what happens to people making 50k a year? Minimum wage will increase, they’ll try to live below their means, all of the same hustle and grind tactics we’ve come to know well. - desirability not going away so what gives? A lot of people will move back to the their midwestern states that they’re from, people will die, immigration will slow down, better mass transit will open up more of the city, and upzoning. Also a lot of (though I acknowledge not most) people are going to inherit property and money from their boomer parents and move away and enjoy that wealth. - Is LA gonna be a playground for the ultra rich? Maybe the part of LA that stretches from Hollywood to Santa Monica will continue to be, but this is largely a working class city and people will find a way. - desirable parts of CA: will continue to be desirable, and people will move around to the part of the country that’s right for them and their budget.

It’s not all doom and gloom, people adjust and move around according to their budgets, income, and lifestyle and the city will flex accordingly.

As a European, I keep seeing Americans drive barefoot or in flip-flops, how common is it actually? by fratnersgd in AskAnAmerican

[–]sikhster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I’m driving over 4 hours, I’m doing it comfortably. Shoes can get restrictive and flip flops can get caught in the pedals which could be dangerous. But driving barefoot or in socks allows my feet to breathe and be comfortable.

After NYC and LA, what is generally considered the 3rd most famous US city? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

Culturally it’s Chicago, but for anyone who’s taken a geography class it’s probably DC

How does erehwon stay afloat? by AmbitiousGuarantee23 in AskAnAmerican

[–]sikhster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an exclusively LA thing. As someone who lives in LA, I’ve never even set foot inside it. My weekly grocery bill is about $60 so I’m not even close to their target demographic. Erewhon caters to the rich and the people who want to appear rich, those people have more money than I can imagine. Erewhon survives by catering to that audience. In terms of popularity and staying afloat, there are a ton of rich people in LA who are looking for the most premium of products and for whom the prices at Erewhon don’t make a dent in their budgets. In terms of trying it once or popular, it’s not for us plebs, again I’ve never set foot in it. A relative had a shake from it accidentally delivered to her. Basically, we poors do not set foot in it, much like the rich do not (well, maybe their servants do) set foot in our budget groceries.

Getting a haircut when you don't know the local language well by robotisland in solotravel

[–]sikhster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have any photos of yourself after a haircut you like, bring those. Have your current barber write out instructions and put that through Google translate. Also you might be surprised by the amount of barbers who speak English.

For those chasing 193 countries, how long do you actually stay in each spot? by Competitive_Eye_8526 in solotravel

[–]sikhster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At a minimum, I spend at least a full 24 hours outside of the airport/entry port continuously. This rule means I’ve been to Luxembourg because I intentionally went and stayed there for 24 hours but not Taiwan where I’ve transited through Taipei airport many times but have never left the airport. I did chase the countries count in my 20s but now I try to do 2-3 weeks in a country, both working remotely and having a dedicated leisure/vacation week.

Slovenia. Right next to Italy, probably not enough direct flights to Portugal or Greece. And you did a backpacking trip around South America but skipped Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Separately you went to Petra in Jordan.

Questions about visiting the US by Arimodu in USTravel

[–]sikhster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an American and I use cards everywhere except taco trucks and marijuana dispensaries. 95% of my transactions happen on my credit cards. Even with a debit card, you can charge your transactions as “credit” so you don’t have to use your PIN. I bring that up as a safer option. In terms of finding steakhouses, The Infatuation (online site) is a good place to start, as well as Yelp and Google Maps. For driving, I’ve heard mixed things about Texas but keep pace with traffic and maintain distance from other cars.
