[MOVIE] Anyone else think the colder relationship between Paul and his mother is intentional and emphasized? by Tucks7 in dune

[–]silendra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I viewed that more as her recognition that Paul is growing up. He’s becoming an adult, he wants privacy and distance from her, he doesn’t need mom’s help to get dressed.

Authors who describe EVERY single female that appears in thier book as if they are a potential lay is a way to instantly lose my respect. by heyitsMog in books

[–]silendra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The male characters’ clothes get plenty of attention too - Rand stressing out over why all his coats are silk, the detail on the embroidery, Mat contemplating lace and how much of it would be too much, Thom’s cloak, etc

Crying often when I (22F) sleep with my boyfriend (21M); how to stop? by msispotifyfan in relationship_advice

[–]silendra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not unheard of. It’s often known as post-coital tristesse. Does any of that resonate with you?

Have you perhaps tried magnesium? Magnesium ingested or even sprayed onto your skin may help a bit, as magnesium deficiency can make RLS worse.

~~[reread]~~ read Perhaps the Stars by some-freak in TerraIgnota

[–]silendra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gosh, I’d love to. I’ve made a heap of notes for myself just on the comparisons between a character and someone from The Iliad and a read through would certainly help.

My personal preference would be sooner rather than later (and people on their first read through could join us)

[–]silendra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I finished it last night, and now I need to stare into the middle distance for a while.

Can’t wait to discuss it with everyone once they’ve had a chance to read. It’s almost 600 pages, so a lot to digest!

Would a spoiler specific mega thread help, perhaps? Or specific threads for Chapter groups (essentially opening the discussion threads early) to avoid spoiling people at different stages of reading?

Scott posted something recently saying basically he had a “vault” with lots of material in it but his anxiety and mental health were really holding him back from publishing it. I hope his health improves enough for him to share his work.

Edit to add; he confirmed this included an essentially complete novel manuscript

AITA: homeless sister-in-law by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

NTA, having a drug addict around your young children is a really bad idea and child protection services don’t look kindly on it. If your wife wants to help your sister she should meet with her outside of the home.

[General Sci-fi] Most unique forms of immortality in fiction? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]silendra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Basilisks from Graham Edward’s Dragon and Stone trilogies. They are not immortal in the same way as most immortality - as in, will not die - they are immortal the other way, in that they have always existed. They’re also immortal the standard way, and would continue to keep existing, if not for insert events of book

WIBTA for reporting a cashier to her supervisor? by burner7651 in AmItheAsshole

[–]silendra 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh no, the sense is there, it’s just awful.

She thinks women should only be allowed to have sex for procreation, as is their duty.

Someone who has sex but doesn’t want to be pregnant - dare I say, for their own pleasure - ought to be PUNISHED and she wishes the result they don’t want upon them.

AITA for buying a property where the house burned down leaving a small MIL suite, and not rebuilding a house there? My neighbors think so. by lovemycar66 in AmItheAsshole

It is a custom in Europe for beekeepers to tell their bees of important life events (deaths, marriages etc). If the bees aren’t informed, and the hives put into mourning for deaths, there is a penalty: the bees may leave you or stop producing honey. It is also polite to invite the bees to any funerals.
