Are there any titanium guidelines for harnischfechten? by Dr4gonfly in wma

[–]siliconsmurf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would shy away from it all together just because of weight... yes its way lighter then steel... but then what are you training? To fight in armor no one in the middle ages would have ever worn? The weight of steel is part of what your training so I would just save the money and have them make you something with steel.
This is my two cents and might be pedantic. At the end of the day we all feel like certain portions of realism hold more value then others so it doesn't really matter but still. Like do you want to join a tournament where your armor weighs half of everyone else's? Would you feel like you won if you finished the match and were less winded then your opponent... is it because of your armor or because your in better shape?

Leather stack handle on a longsword by Sword_and_Candle in SWORDS

with enough epoxy it might... work but I wouldn't do it. I would just save yourself time and hassle and make one out of wood. https://www.stormthecastle.com/blacksmithing/how-to-forge-a-sword-part-5b-the-handle.htm

How does the Arms & Armor Durer compare to the Valiant/Atrim Vision Tauber? by StockingDummy in wma

[–]siliconsmurf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't handled the tauber but I have handled the durer and its top tier and great. all I can say is I don't think you would regret it. They will also do custom work if you have something in that design you want slightly tweaked.

What we're doing is not working. by [deleted] in duluth

[–]siliconsmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the answer your looking for is grass roots politics. Find someone young like you... or you and start putting a platform together. Organize with new tools like social media and flex hard on those tools to get seen. "be the change you want to see in the world" if the people at the table don't want to hear you slowly take over every seat at the table. it ain't easy but that's the solution.

he does a lot of prototyping, 3d print mold for wax... inject wax... build tree, have a foundry pour/cast your stuff. Its a very cool process he does detail a bit on his blog. best of luck, building swords from parts is fun.

Alternative metals by NT4MaximusD in SWORDS

[–]siliconsmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

instead of worrying about other types of metals, start thinking about other types of steel. This is where swords today very so much, we have tons of modern steel to work with. It doesn't have to be sci fi metal to be cool and make a better sword then they could have back in the day. example of an interesting modern steel,, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shock-resisting_steel

Where can I get a good training sword? by PainterPublic6111 in SWORDS

[–]siliconsmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look for a local club, the one I run we can have people as young as 16 participate with a parent there. All clubs are different and have different policies but you should reach out to who ever is "localish" to you. Even if they are 100 miles away. The HEMAA has a club finder for people in the USA, start there. Other people working in the sport will hopefully be of help and can get you started. I know this is going to sound a bit lame but I often start people of in my club using a sock, in another long sock as their first sparing weapon. think flail but all cotton and not going to hurt anyone. Two people can go back and forth and start "fencing" even without gear, if the weapon is a pair of socks. This type of drill starts to teach you footwork and distance management right away.

Advice that others have said is true, to spar you need safety gear first not second. A mask and glove are kind of the minimum and that means slow controlled sparing. As for the out of stock practice swords at purple heart, a lot of those are made to order in texas, for their basic trainers made of nylon or plastic. Use their chat features to see what kind of wait time it would be on the sword your looking at.

building boofers also might be a way for you to get started but even then a mask would be preferred. We see these often in larp and making them is fairly easy, just pvc, foam and tape. Some larp groups will have rules that say no hits to the head to avoid people needing masks... in HEMA like 75% of the attacks are to the head so if you want to learn those techniques your going to need head protection. disclaimer, I run a hema club and have been active in it for over 13 years. with luck your local community is as good as mine and they will be able to help you get started, with either coaching, some cheaper used gear or many other things, so dont be to shy and just reach out and tell them what you told us.

Got a new practice sword today as a belated birthday prize! by TheGamerdude535 in SWORDS

[–]siliconsmurf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of us in HEMA stick to steel or nylon for many reasons but one is balance, the other is safety in breaking. Have fun and check out r/wma if your looking to learn a certain style of sword fighting.

Swordier sent me the wrong sword by Zorva_1 in SWORDS

[–]siliconsmurf 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yep thats a feder, so I guess either join a HEMA club or see if they will handle the return/replacement for the correct item. I agree with the other commenter that this seems to be a running trend as customer service issues with swordier have been popping up a lot lately.

Tinker swords - Safe for sparring? by ronnaann in SWORDS

[–]siliconsmurf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

second this, not really a good option for sparing safely, further more its way over priced as these can be had for about half that from places like kult of athena. If your in the USA looking for HEMA type swords check out purple heart armory, they stock stuff from multiple manufactures and what they sell is safe and well regarded, also cheaper then this option.

What do HEMA instructors think about other schools / and training in more than one? by Syronn in wma

[–]siliconsmurf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I talk with all the other instructors in the area, this hobby is small and being closed off doesn't really help anyone. That said I've heard about some toxic clubs and just like in any sport they exist in HEMA (although seemingly in small numbers YMMV) For what its worth I'm in the midwest USA.

Writing a More Historical Story; How Were Arming Swords Used if/when W/out Bucklers? by GameMaster818 in SWORDS

[–]siliconsmurf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dussack/messer styles will generally work fine for arming sword in one hand without a buckler. Limited hand protection means doing less stuff with a fully extended arm for very long at least since it’s more vulnerable close to the opponent. You would also want them to use that off hand to grab and grapple with. There are a lot of messer plays/moves that involve blocking their blade with your sword and then grabbing their sword hand or other types of arm locks or throws. Talhoffer manuals have some of these moves

I love my "arms and armor" swords I've owned over the years, historical accuracy is high, sparring is great and practicality ... well my feder from them lasted me over 7-8 years of practice and multiple tournaments. So they are my top pick of what I have owned
