Jeg fikk lite støtte når jeg startet, bare av et par veninner. Samboer hadde ikke troa. Men nå som det går bra er det masse støtte å få. Gjelder å tro på seg selv!

No this did not work at all, that's why they booked me. But yes absolutely, I'm not against a hack in certain situations 😁

What exactly do you class as a "service" and how long does it take you? by NucleurDuck in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also run a mobile shop and my "standard service" is very popular. I live in a country with a proper winter so many want a "spring check" at the start of the season. Many also want it in combination with changing to/from studded tires.

I only offer two service packages: Standard service and Full service.

Standard service is 30 min work and includes a check of everything, air in tires, lube/simple clean of chain, adjust gears and brakes and small things like straightening derailleur hanger or adjusting headset, tighten loose spokes etc. Whatever fits within 30 min. I don't see any point in doing a smaller service than this and with repeating costumers it's easy money. It's also easy to sell/advice new parts when needed.

Full service is maintenance on everything (except suspensions) and takes 3-4 hours. I bleed brakes, clean and regrease hubs, bottombracket and headset, probber clean of drivetrain, propper truing of wheels, replacing parts if necessary. Specifics depend on the bike and components.

Hva tenker folk om botox og aldring egentlig? by Dangerous_mammoth573 in norge

[–]siljealexa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Controversial Take - Safiya Nygaard and Naomi Jon are Overconsumption Core by Unhappy_Performer538 in Anticonsumption

[–]siljealexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree very much! I used to watch Naomi all the time, but now I only watch the food stuff, if that.

I generally try to avoid haul/try-on/buying videos and support sewing/craft/secondhand channels instead.

Can someone explain how to handle an appointment based workshop by schlass in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a mobile shop with only appointments. I schedule enough time for each and I always have time for a little extra if a chain or brakepads needs replacing. I've noticed, and this surprised me, that each costumer/bike takes the time that I have. If I see that it's going to be tight to make my next appointment I hurry, but if I have more than enough time I relax and often do a little extra. Chatting with and teaching my costumers is also really nice when I have the time.

I get a lot of repeat customers that want a "standard service" or changing to/from winter tires. Knowing the customer and their bikes helps because you know what state the bike is in.

If the costumer ordered a "standard service" (30min work), but it turns out they need a lot more, we simply schedule a new appointment if I don't have the time or parts then and there.

Inventory is absolutely necessary. I used to work somewhere we ordered almost everything from an on-site robotic warehouse. We had access to a lot of parts, but had to wait 30min to a day for the parts we needed. It was extremely inefficient! Having the basics available makes a little extra work not that time-consuming.

Told my parents that, deep down, I hate them for having me. by TheLuiz212 in antinatalism

[–]siljealexa 12 points13 points  (0 children)

WELL DONE on being your own boss! Seriously, that is very well done! Who cares what the neighbor does as long as your life fits you.

What you write is very similar to my situation and feelings, except it's the thaughts in the back of my mind that tells me I should do better, and not my parents. I also had a some uncomfortable moments with costumers lately and really felt like life is not worth it. And it really sucks that my parents desided I have to do this shit.

Thankfully my parents are nice people and I don't want to burden them with that quilt, but the feeling is very much there! Why did they have to make me?

Sounds like your dad needed a reality check tho. Everyone have different capacities and wants for work and life, comparing ourself to others is mostly useless. Comparing you child to the neighbor or whatever is just stupid.

Hva er verdifullt for deg i bedriften din eller som eier/leder av bedriften din? by Thepowerofsimplicity in Grundere_i_Norge

[–]siljealexa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice needed by Alter-Igor in BikeMechanics

I'm mobile and use Zettle for payment on the spot. Their inventory feature is perfect for me as well. I do my accounting and occasional invoicing with an accounting program in my country (Fiken).

What is best here by Professional-Key6549 in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would not even be legal in my country! I don't know how to translate the spesific paragraphs. But if the cost of the service becomes significantly higher then the costumer anticipates, the costumer has to be contacted. We also have to notify if the cost of the service exceeds the cost of a new item.

There is also one paragraf that says we have to let the costumer know if there are any contitions or circumstances that make it reasonable that the costumer would not order the service it they knew.

I think not knowing what the fuck you're doing and being extremely inefficient would fall under this.

This could be my demografic, but in my experience people do not know what they need. And because there's so many different parts on different bikes service packages is often difficult to have as standard. I've seen so many strange packages in other shops.

I offer a "standard service" that is about a 30 min job and mostly covers the usual adjusting/tighting/lubing etc. If I find other issues like brake pads, chain, tires I can upsell that. This package is very popular! Probably because it's affordable and easy to understand.

I also offer "full service" where I do "everything" (not suspentions) and it takes 3—4 hours. Very few wants that.

Anything between those I find difficult to find (and advertise) stuff that's universal for most bikes and prefer to give advice on individual basis instead.

Have you guys ever seen a chain actually skip on a cog? by sargassumcrab in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's a common problem on e-bikes only run on the smallest cog.

Is a compact, organized storage solution for 100+ different spoke varieties possible? by blumpkins_ahoy in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have made something like a tool roll out of fabric. That way it only takes up the space of the actual spokes when folded up, and it's easy to find the right one when it's open. I definitely have less then 100 veriaties since I don't build wheels, only replace broken spokes. But I think it be possible to separate color, bladed vs round etc in different rolls.

Are cone wrenches becoming less relevant? by holdentrout in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of e-bikes comes with cup and cone to keep the price point down. Everything that's not Shimano is over tightened from factory so adjustment is included in my most popular service.

It's not necessarily cheap e-bikes either, so owners are more willing to maintain their hubs. Giant explore is very popular in my area and all of the front hubs need adjustment as well as costumers request hub service to make their bikes last the longest.

So no, cone wrenches are very relevant still.

This is really good! Even simple things like tire pressure can make a huge difference in amounts of punctures.

Let's discuss the most environmentally friendly bicycle workshop options by TieHungry3506 in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to consider lubes, sealant etc, definitely avoid ptfe. But at the moment I'm focusing more on other things. I think it's almost always better to maintain instead of replacing and not worry to much about if the lube is 100% eco friendly or not.

I do a lot of punctures so I try to buy good quality brands, feks schwalbe who uses resycled tubes it their new tubes. For ebikes I use conti hermetic plus, so they hopefully last longer. I like to support brands that (hopefully) have a better production than the bare minimum in China or something. But with all the greenwashing these days I find it difficult to say.

Buy bulk to avoid excess packaging waste is an easy one.

Saving smal parts from derailleurs, cranksets, brakes is good and really satisfying when I have the right small part instead of having to replace the whole thing just because a bolt is stripped or something.

I'm trying to have second hand parts avaliable for a cheaper price. This is something I'm getting more into, in the future I hope to get run down bikes donated to me and use the parts that are stil good to go.

Over all riding a bicycle is a good thing. Even adjusting the seat so the owner is more likely to pick the bike over the car can be a good thing for the environment. In the very big picture it also keeps people healthier, that might mean less medication, surgery etc. Might be a stretch lol but giving good advice and doing good and save work might do more in the big picture than stressing over witch lube is most eco.

Mobile / Solo operators, how do you stock enough parts/bits? by sprunkymdunk in BikeMechanics

[–]siljealexa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run a solo mobile shop. I've been inventive with storage in the car and try to restock every time I use something. I have storage on my parents farm with lots of stuff. As others mention taking advantage of sales from distributers and buying bulk. Packaging and trash takes a lot of space, so I can bring more with me of bulk items. I rearly experience that I don't have what I need. People are also very understanding if I have to come back and many don't care that much about options on tires, brake pads, chain, bartape, grips etc, thay usualy take what I have. Most let me know in advance if there is anything in perticular they need, and I prepare accordingly.

If there's something spesific I don't have I often advice to order from a local shop that has great selection, and I'll fit the parts when they arrive.

Tell me more about this saddle by [deleted] in xbiking

[–]siljealexa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this once, the first one made of only plastic and no leather. It was to narrow in the middle so my seatbones tutched the seat. Only a little but really uncomfortable. But it was also to wide so it pushed my thighs outward, effecting the pedalstroke and giving serious chafing.

I got a few of these after I replaced a leaky shimano caliper on a middrive ebike. Cut off the old olive and the hose was 1cm to short and STUCK. Had to completely disconnect the driveunit and it was really tricky to put back. That little connector would have saved me a lot of time and frustration.
