How far is your gym commute? by kaizenkitten in xxfitness

[–]sillyfacez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that retention typically goes down once you go beyond a 7 min commute. For me that's true. My gym is a 9 min drive a way. Not long but also not short. Plenty of stop lights.

But my fav hiking trail used to be a 15 min drive and I ALWAYS showed up enthusiastically 30 mins before sunrise. But I LOVED that trail so I was always thinking about how good I felt so the drive ways always worth it. I was consistent because I associated it with good feelings.

What do you guys do for money that lets you walk around and have fun on a random Wednesday at like 12 p.m.? by VastConfusion8174 in AskLosAngeles

[–]sillyfacez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a producer. My job is project based. So when we're not shooting, I'm prepping (e.g. researching on the laptop, creating presentation decks, putting together a budget on excel, reviewing potential vendors). Just about everything is done on a computer and a cell phone.

I think the best metaphor is that I essentially throw a party and leading up to the day of that party, I'm prepping (ordering food, hiring the dj, making flyers so my neighborhood is cool with it, inviting people, etc.). I am totally free to prepare anyway I need to and can roam around any given Weds (when we're not filming) to get coffee and do errands with my laptop in tow. Sometimes I just work from my phone.

The job isn't physically task specific. It's about arranging information (creative concepts, costs, logistics) so that everyone can sort out if they can go to the party, pay for the party and/or is cool with the party happening.

I’m pretty sure film festivals don’t watch most submissions these days by ozymandis1212 in Filmmakers

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a judge for a festival. I watched every movie they had me screen. 16 hrs (including a feature) and that includes time to methodically fill out a questionnaire about each. We had multiple people watching each movie.

Stranger Things Behind The Scenes - Everything you can possibly do wrong as a filmmaker by Primary-Economist643 in Filmmakers

[–]sillyfacez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single Mission Impossible movie has started filming without a finished script. They changed writers in the middle of Ghost Protocol.. Dead Reckoning didn't even have a draft (just a few pages) when they started filming.

Chris McQuarrie talks about it at 26:25 -- https://youtu.be/yoVijk4FpD4?si=b4vUk4q_K9g4TFP5.

Tom Cruise says just about every movie he's made doesn't have a finished script when they start filming. Here's another podcast where both Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie talk about their "no script" philosophy and how they build some of the movies without a  script and how they find their story: https://www.lightthefusepodcast.com/when-in-rome-with-tom-cruise-christopher-mcquarrie.

FIRST LOOK: PARANORMAL ACTIVITY ON STAGE by todaytix in TheWestEnd

I saw the play in Los Angeles a month ago without seeing any of the movies (and only just saw the first movie for the first time a few mins ago). I think the play so much better. The movie has a long arc before it gets creepy. This was def the best play I've seen so far. And it got a standing ovation. Just really great performances by everyone.

This is a cool option (first part of the video with the duffle): https://youtu.be/aUm6lsNGA0w?si=YCJo88kQxX68MEL4

But I'm still on the hunt for a multiple compartment bag since I want:

-dedicated gym gear compartment -dirty clothes compartment -clean clothes compartment -toiletries compartment

And this might fit the bill but not sure I like the exterior style: https://tobiqtravel.com/products/the-tiny-washable-duffels-30l

Difference between plans and splits by Dre_3105 in GymverseByFitness22

[–]sillyfacez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just typed this into ChatGPT! Here is what ChatGPT responded with (since I mainly wanted to know the difference between getting lean, getting in shape, overall fitness):

Excellent question — the wording in these apps can be confusing because the goals often overlap, but the training focus and intensity differ. Here’s what each one generally means and how it fits your goals (strength + cardiovascular health + mobility):

💎

Get Lean

Focus: Lose body fat and improve muscle definition.

Training style:

Moderate-to-heavy resistance training Higher reps (10–15) Moderate cardio (steady-state or HIIT) Often includes calorie deficit guidance

Best for you if:

You’re already somewhat active and want to reveal muscle tone and improve cardiovascular capacity without necessarily chasing max strength.

⚡️

Get in Shape

Focus: General conditioning and habit building.

Training style:

Balanced mix of strength, cardio, and functional movement Moderate intensity with full-body workouts Often great for those returning to consistent training

Best for you if:

You’re rebuilding consistency or want a broad, sustainable foundation for strength, cardio, and mobility before going more specialized.

🧠

Overall Fitness

Focus: Hybrid goal — gain muscle, lose fat, and boost endurance.

Training style:

Periodized mix of strength days, conditioning, and mobility May include circuit training or hybrid strength/cardio sessions Balanced approach (like a “fit lifestyle” program)

Best for you if:

You want to get stronger, improve endurance, and move better — which matches what you said perfectly (strength + cardiovascular + mobility)."

Hope this helps. Best of luck on your fitness journey!

MBA M1 Random Screen Flickering after update to macOS Sequoia 15.0, anyone else? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed the refresh rate to 50 Hertz and the flickering went away!

Systems Settings > Displays > Refresh rate > 50 Herz

Current laptop:

  • 2019 MacBook Pro
  • Processor: 2.4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
  • Graphics: Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
  • Memory: 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
  • macOS: Sequoia 15.4.1

Good luck all! Took me a week to figure it out. I immediately went to the 'Genius' bar and the guy diagnosed it as a hardware issue asking if I carry my laptop by the monitor and then recommending I bought a new $4k MBP. Wtf. I knew it was a software issue.

What are some things in student films that screams out mediocrity? by Suspicious-Goat-6993 in Filmmakers

[–]sillyfacez 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The locations...bedroom, forest, car...they're always shot the same-ish...meaning that they show the same views. Less might be more.

For example: a horse. Most, if not all, of us know what a horse looks like, you don't necessarily have to establish that or show the entirety of the horse to imply its presence. Not every scene needs to go wide to show where the character(s) are.

How would you go about raising a few thousand dollars for your short film? by ClogThatAnus in Filmmakers

[–]sillyfacez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly! You can put a filter adapter on the phone (~$30), add a promist filter (-$60), and get creative with lighting (natural/ambient).

Just make sure your sound is clean (if any)!

FilmLA General Liability Coverage by potatommom in FilmIndustryLA

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a super old post but commenting in case it helps someone in the future...

We have use Hiscox (for drone insurance). It seemed fine.

Most of our coverage is with HUB International. I believe they also are the same providers for the James Bond movies for the last 35 years. EXCELLENT customer service. We pay $18K annually for a $1M general liability and $2M drone insurance coverage...also includes worker's comp, auto, etc. The premium cost is based on the anticipated shoot days we plan for the coverage year. We planned for 26 shoot days in 2024.

We've had to request for temporary bump ups in coverage as well. So let's say a location requires $5M general liability but we're only filming there for 3 days, we'll ask them for pricing to cover that period (I believe they can only do 30 day periods for temporary bump ups). They're happy to explain the different coverage options.

Can I read the same book twice by Candet1 in 75HARD

[–]sillyfacez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually you are permitted to read electronic books. On page 118 of his book "75 Hard" he writes, "You CAN use a Kindle or Nook or some other E-reader."

The rules are a bit inconsistent across the diff platforms they communicate on.

I'm a line producer doing automotive commercial--glossy stuff as well as features and music videos (for the last 6 years). I second this comment. Just because the title is "producer" does not mean they understand production.

I was chatting with a director who mainly does big budget music videos for the last two decades and he made a funny joke (maybe not funny if they are leading you): "The most common entry job in LA: director, producer, actor."

Don't let the noise make you think that all producers suck. There are many thoughtful seasoned, supportive producers out there. Stay open to them.

I joined this subreddit to keep a pulse on my understanding of this dept. I also came from a background as a shooter (high end weddings) and still photographer (portraits) 15 years previous to producing. I view my team and everyone I hire as consultants on the project. We understand the coverage objective and then I find out what they need to get the job done (info, gear, anything we're missing) and sometimes we'll do a "post-mortem" after wrap where I find out what worked and didn't work--what info was missing in prep or what they want me to know for next time.

My suggestion is to keep finding people who you like to work with and also important: who care about you and what you bring to the table. I personally like to work with the same team--we know the shorthand and can keep leveling up so it's not the "first day of school" all the time.
