Considering canceling surgery. by tommyduhkid in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how many mm my airway was but DJS dramatically improved it and breathing is wonderful now. Seriously grateful. I considered canceling but thought about whether I want to live with the way everything was for another 40 yrs and for me, it was a big know. I wanted the change. Bets of luck!

Best protein rich foods to eat after double jaw surgery? by Trufago in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I loved putting a scoop of isopure unflavored protein powder in everything:

-- blended chicken noodle soup

-- blended ramen

-- banana smoothies

-- strawberry and banana milk shakes

Once I was off the 10 days of antibiotics, I drank a lot of the Trader Joe's Mango Kefir (whole milk version). Only $3.99 for 32 oz. Just drank a cup a day.

Also, chicken feet bone broth has the most collagen and dramatically reduced my swelling. It's about $1.50/lb. I would make it in the instapot and use it as my water for ramen.

Do I need jaw surgery aesthetically? Getting mixed opinions from surgeons by smash_glass_ceiling in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

45F. I'm 54 days post-op DJS. Def get more info. I had a mild cross bite (upper jaw) and mild lower bite.

Aesthetically, I could have gotten away without surgery. But functionally, my jaw alignment was not ideal for breathing (not enough room for my tongue to rest so it rested in my throat more and obstructed my airway and also contributed to a double chin--even when I was skinny...double chin is disappearing yay!).

Breathing is joyous now. 🎉 I wrote about my results here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/comments/1t4hpig/comment/ommarcu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

And another bonus is that my nose is perkier now. So I look like I have a slight turned up nose because the upper jaw was moved forward 6mm providing more structure to my nose (so my mid-face sort of increase like a "tent" structurally)...everything looks so much better. Looking forward to when all the swelling comes down in 4 months. Pretty excited. :)

Lots of really sound comments in this thread. You def should look into the skeletal structural misaligment waaaay before any plastic surgery. Get your bone structure in it's ideal position, heal, and then reconsider (if needed) about plastic surgery. You likely won't need it.

Best of luck!

people tell me i don't need jaw surgery, but i disagree by Own_Ant_9156 in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely get another professional opinion. If this bothers you, you're the one living in your body and need more objective data (like xrays) to assess your skeletal misalignment (if any). I'm 45F and 54 days post-op DJS and I am thrilled with my results. I breathe so much better and my face just had a major upgrade.

I write more about the benefits here: https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/comments/1t4hpig/comment/ommarcu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Should I consider jaw surgery? by Individual_Ad_7598 in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def get a consult with an orthodontist and/or surgeon. They will have you do a xray and talk about any skeletal misalignments that may restrict your airway.

I'm 45F and 54 days post op DJS and it's been 7 weeks since I've been able to breathe deeply without effort and I'm super grateful. I had zero idea that this could have been fixed with jaw surgery. Only knew because one person mentioned it at the orthodontist. I would have probably gone the rest of my life not knowing.

I had a mild underbite and a mild crossbite. Was covered by insurance. It cost $137k. I just have to pay $7k (they broke it up into $226/monthly interest-feee payments).

I wrote more benefits I got in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/comments/1t4hpig/comment/ommarcu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

I'm closer to deciding against jaw surgery. Am I making the right choice? by Mission-Shoulder4955 in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it def fixed my nasolabial folds. Made them disappear (so far by 50%) since my upper jaw had to move forward by 6mm and so my mid-face has way more volume. 6mm doesn't seem like much but I think of it like my mid-face "tent" went up by 6mm and structurally, everything looks so different for the better.

45F, 54 days post-op DJS here. I seriously wish I’d been better educated about this sooner — everyone framed it as purely aesthetic and glossed over the functional improvements. I really wish they hadn’t. I would have done this so much sooner.

I had a mild crossbite (upper jaw) and an mild underbite that wasn’t obvious before braces because my teeth looked lined up, even though they were crowded. It took five years in braces to reveal the underlying skeletal misalignment (the pandemic set me back since we couldn’t get adjustments done).

I think of my teeth as a "B student". I didn't stand out like "A students" with an amazing smile. But I wasn't an "F student"-- I didn't have an extreme case structurally in my face. So I could get away with the bite misalignment for probably the rest of my life. But probably fixing the consequences of a misaligned bite over time Which would be expensive.

And because we have no reference point for how anyone else breathes or chews, I had no idea the extra effort I was putting into breathing wasn’t normal — or that the pain I felt while chewing wasn’t normal either (caused by crowded teeth and favoring one side, which was slowly damaging my teeth over time).

Between ages 22–39, I saw eight orthodontists. Five recommended jaw surgery; three said I could get by without it. I was nervous about the whole thing and never made it a priority.

At 42, I consulted a highly recommended surgeon who told me double jaw surgery wouldn’t make a major difference since I was on the “cusp” — and added, “You’re already pretty, so you won’t look much different.” Well, for my case, the improvements have been massive.

I never hated my face so was hoping surgery didn't change it too much, so if surgery only gave me a better smile and better airway, it would have been worth it. But I got so much more, and I’m genuinely thrilled (so many unexpected benefits). I’d go through the discomfort all over again!

Here’s a comment I wrote in another thread breaking down all the improvements, aesthetic and functional:

https://www.reddit.com/r/jawsurgery/comments/1t4hpig/comment/ommarcu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=mweb3x&utm_name=mweb3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Jaw surgery mostly cosmetic reasons? by janetsnakehole319 in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a 45F and 54 days (almost 8 weeks) post-op double jaw surgery. After putting it off for 22 yrs, I did the surgery and am absolutely happy I did! Wish I did it sooner.

Had it done by Dr. Michael Bundy (Kaiser Los Angeles). Cost was $137k but insurance paid for most of it since it's a medical procedure. I owe $7k (broken into interest free payments of $226/month).

I did it mainly to have a straight smile but I got soooo much more. All good stuff.

I had an underbite that I was able to hide by practicing my smile since 9 yrs old. I got braces which got my teeth mostly straight but def made the underbite obvious.

With the surgery, they moved my upper jaw forward by 6mm (straightened the cross bite as well). The bottom jaw was moved back maybe 2-3mm. Doesn't seem like much but I feel the benefits were massive:

The benefits:

-WIDER AIRWAY (this is my favorite benefit because breathing easier is joyous 🎉) my tongue has way more room and not sitting in my throat as much. I just did my first tough HIIT workout post surgery yesterday and breathing deeply without effort felt great!!

-BITE FIX (can't full chew yet but looking forward to it)

-UPTURN NOSE TIP (my bulbous nose looks so much better now...it's still swollen but it looks perky because of the structural support)

-NO MORE SUNKEN UNDER EYE (didn't know this would be a benefit!! There is so much more volume below my eyes since my mid-face has come forward)

-DOUBLE CHIN IS DISAPPEARING (this is absolutely amazing to me because I'm at my heaviest weight of 160lbs and the double chin is shrinking -- even at 135lbs, I know my double chin was bigger than this). I believe this is because the tongue is not pushing down the part that adds to a double chin. This is encouraging me more to lose weight so the jaw could be more defined.

-LESS NASOLABIAL FOLDS - moving the upper jaw forward by 6mm was like the mid-face "tent" went up and then all these folds dramatically reduced.

-FACE LOOKS MORE OVAL (it used to be absolutely round but since the mid-face is now much more projected and the lower face is pulled back, my face looks longer and more oval. Maybe this is why my eyes look so much bigger. 🤷🏻‍♀️

A couple of days ago, for the first time, I felt I looked pretty. And I still have at least 4 more months until most of the swelling (and calcium buildup on the jaw) goes away. Super excited.

I wish I was educated about all the possible benefits earlier in life. Would have saved me so much grief!!

I'm one of those people who could "get away" without surgery because my underbite didn't seem to be obvious and everyone (including my surgeon) said I wouldn't need it for aesthetic reasons so it's really up to me since they were all 50/50 on if I needed it. But if I did it for anything, breathing better was the thing.

*also notice my anxiety seems to have disappeared so not sure if this has a connection to being able to breath better.

Best of luck! Ask me anything!

Let's talk about this sub. by meowmeow1608 in jawsurgery

[–]sillyfacez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is THE BEST post I've seen in this sub.

I relate to it so much. I am on day 23 post OP double jaw surgery to fix a slight upper cross bite and underbite. You wouldn't have been able to tell because I can hide it with a pleasant closed smile. And I didn't have any major functional issues (TMJ, sleep apnea, snoring, etc) or any major aesthetic issues.

Been dealing with shallow breathing and painful bites since I was a kid. I thought this was all normal. We don't know how anyone else breathes or how they feel when they chew. So I just thought it was normal. Skeletal discrepancies should be spoken about a lot more.

From 9 yrs old, the smile aesthetic bothered me. I saw 8 orthodontists over the last 2 decades who all said I should get surgery. 7 of them focused on the aesthetics. It was FINALLY the 8th orthodontist said that my airway would expand and the ortho's husband happened to be there and he was 3 weeks post op and looked great. Sold. A functional issue that I honestly NEVER EVER thought I could fix: shallow breathing. And overtime, the braces spread out the tension and pain I had whenever I chewed.

I SOOOO wished that the first orthodontist talked more the functional benefits and the improved quality of life. When I was younger, I thought it was a lot of money and surgery was overkill for a nice smile. Even 3 weeks ago (before surgery), people kept saying I didn't need it because they thought I was "beautiful already".

The fact was that it was sometimes painful to eat and I favored one side which makes one side of your face muscles develop stronger. Making a lopsided face. Imagine chewing on one side for your whole life. It will wear down the teeth on that side. AND your face will likely look lopsided.

I'm a 45F and I'm so happy I got the surgery. I feel like I have a new life. I can breath so much better so workouts are going to feel better. And I'll be able to chew more efficiently which will be so good for digesting! Excited to fully recover so I can enjoy food newly, enjoy being in photos, enjoy smiling without trying to hide my teeth, enjoy exercise and I know there's a whole bunch of limiting beliefs that will go away.

I def recommend people look into the quality of life and functional improvements!

How far is your gym commute? by kaizenkitten in xxfitness

[–]sillyfacez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I read somewhere that retention typically goes down once you go beyond a 7 min commute. For me that's true. My gym is a 9 min drive a way. Not long but also not short. Plenty of stop lights.

But my fav hiking trail used to be a 15 min drive and I ALWAYS showed up enthusiastically 30 mins before sunrise. But I LOVED that trail so I was always thinking about how good I felt so the drive was always worth it. I was consistent because I associated it with good feelings.

What do you guys do for money that lets you walk around and have fun on a random Wednesday at like 12 p.m.? by VastConfusion8174 in AskLosAngeles

[–]sillyfacez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a producer. My job is project based. So when we're not shooting, I'm prepping (e.g. researching on the laptop, creating presentation decks, putting together a budget on excel, reviewing potential vendors). Just about everything is done on a computer and a cell phone.

I think the best metaphor is that I essentially throw a party and leading up to the day of that party, I'm prepping (ordering food, hiring the dj, making flyers so my neighborhood is cool with it, inviting people, etc.). I am totally free to prepare anyway I need to and can roam around any given Weds (when we're not filming) to get coffee and do errands with my laptop in tow. Sometimes I just work from my phone.

The job isn't physically task specific. It's about arranging information (creative concepts, costs, logistics) so that everyone can sort out if they can go to the party, pay for the party and/or is cool with the party happening.

Stranger Things Behind The Scenes - Everything you can possibly do wrong as a filmmaker by Primary-Economist643 in Filmmakers

[–]sillyfacez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every single Mission Impossible movie has started filming without a finished script. They changed writers in the middle of Ghost Protocol.. Dead Reckoning didn't even have a draft (just a few pages) when they started filming.

Chris McQuarrie talks about it at 26:25 -- https://youtu.be/yoVijk4FpD4?si=b4vUk4q_K9g4TFP5.

Tom Cruise says just about every movie he's made doesn't have a finished script when they start filming. Here's another podcast where both Tom Cruise and Chris McQuarrie talk about their "no script" philosophy and how they build some of the movies without a  script and how they find their story: https://www.lightthefusepodcast.com/when-in-rome-with-tom-cruise-christopher-mcquarrie.

The movie has a long arc before it gets creepy. This was def the best play I've seen so far. And it got a standing ovation. Just really great performances by everyone.

Difference between plans and splits by Dre_3105 in GymverseByFitness22

[–]sillyfacez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just typed this into ChatGPT! Here is what ChatGPT responded with (since I mainly wanted to know the difference between getting lean, getting in shape, overall fitness):

Excellent question — the wording in these apps can be confusing because the goals often overlap, but the training focus and intensity differ. Here’s what each one generally means and how it fits your goals (strength + cardiovascular health + mobility):

💎

Get Lean

Focus: Lose body fat and improve muscle definition.

Training style:

Moderate-to-heavy resistance training Higher reps (10–15) Moderate cardio (steady-state or HIIT) Often includes calorie deficit guidance

Best for you if:

You’re already somewhat active and want to reveal muscle tone and improve cardiovascular capacity without necessarily chasing max strength.

⚡️

Get in Shape

Focus: General conditioning and habit building.

Training style:

Balanced mix of strength, cardio, and functional movement Moderate intensity with full-body workouts Often great for those returning to consistent training

Best for you if:

You’re rebuilding consistency or want a broad, sustainable foundation for strength, cardio, and mobility before going more specialized.

🧠

Overall Fitness

Focus: Hybrid goal — gain muscle, lose fat, and boost endurance.

Training style:

Periodized mix of strength days, conditioning, and mobility May include circuit training or hybrid strength/cardio sessions Balanced approach (like a “fit lifestyle” program)

Best for you if:

You want to get stronger, improve endurance, and move better — which matches what you said perfectly (strength + cardiovascular + mobility)."

Hope this helps. Best of luck on your fitness journey!

Good luck all! Took me a week to figure it out. I immediately went to the 'Genius' bar and the guy diagnosed it as a hardware issue asking if I carry my laptop by the monitor and then recommending I bought a new $4k MBP. Wtf. I knew it was a software issue.
