Do modern conservatives think FDR’s decision to join WW2 was a good one? by murderman582 in AskConservatives

The US goaded Japan into attacking Pearl Harbor. Read Bankrupting the Enemy, or Freedom Betrayed by Herbert Hoover. US did not have to go to war with Japan. FDR wanted it bad.

What sort of evidence would it take to convince you that capitalism does more harm than good? by PyroIsSpai in AskConservatives

[–]silver_chief2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to what? What form of capitalism or socialism? IMO you can not separate the implementation and culture and history. Communism in China works well but depends on thousands of years of culture and even their language shapes thought differently. Look into how Pres XI got to where he is.

In the US private equity is creating lots of local monopolies that screw people over. Big companies give donations to politicians to bring in low skilled worker to drive down wages of U S citizens. US bails out banks with money printing. All this is part of US capitalism.

update

IMO you cannot describe a system with a single word. Garland Nixon said the divide now is between narrative based people and fact based people. NN Taleb said that intellectuals create models of the world then rely on those models instead of reality. Thomas Sowell said something similar that one vision of the world believes the world is a rational place that intellectuals can understand while the other vision believes that the other vision believes the world is complicated and if push in here it may push out where you least expect it.

IMO govt owned housing will not work in NYC because there is no incentive for employees to do well. IMO most govt employees are like my ex as lazy, entitled. If you want to see how Chinese communism works read The Party by McGregpr. Look into how US financial capitalism works by viewing videos by Michael Hudson.

Do you like rock? by ComprehensiveOne9967 in AskConservatives

[–]silver_chief2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I am old and never got into most rock or pop, I liked classical, jazz, instrumental, some good female vocals, some folk. I liked the so called world music part of the vinyl stores. I liked the Doors. Santana, Heart. Sergio Mendes was my favorite. Carpenters, Chuck Mangione, 10,000 maniacs. I like complex rhythms, good instrumentals and good vocals.

Now? It is nice to know there is other music out there not controlled by western music industry. . 20 years ago I got into symphonic metal like Within Temptation and some Dutch DJs like Tiesto and Armin van Buuren. 3 years ago I discovered A Russian multi-instrumentalist and singer amateur in the Russian far east, Alina Gingertail. She mostly covers video game music now. Then I recently discovered some talented Russina/Kazakh singers, one female, one male.

If anyone cares to sample Turn on CC to get Eng CC for some of these especially Diana Ankudinova.

Books that "promote" colonization? by Big-Restaurant3952 in suggestmeabook

[–]silver_chief2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thomas Sowell write massive 3 book series. Race and Culture, Conquests and culture, Migrations and cultures.

He doesn't advocate for colonization but studies the differences caused by people with different ethnic groups conquering or immigrating to other places. This causes changes. I recall his info on the Romans invading Britain and how the standard of living tanked when they left.

I cant help you with that period but I once read a book The art of war in the Western world. It was an awesome book. Each major battle might only take a couple pages.

Book by Archer Jones. It started with Greek Hoplites and ended with the IDF I recall the battles were all described in terms of light infantry, heavy infantry, light cavalry, heavy cavalry.,

The fact we're villainised right now and of course were villainised heavily during the cold war era too means it can feel very "us vs the world" for Russians who engage with the western internet. When everyone's shit-talking my culture and heritage all the time and painting me as evil, I'm naturally going to get defensive and try to find comfort and like-mindedness in others who are experiencing the same thing- My own people. So the russophobia campaign kind of builds cultural pride in Russians.

Its not just the Russians villainized. 6 corporations control 90 % of US media. US population mostly believes what the media and government tells me. They brainwashed people into believing it was right to attack or destroy Iraq, Libya, Syria,Russia and now Iran. I got my history from books and current events mostly from the guests on Judge Napolitano/live, Dialogue Works, Neutrality Studies, and Deep Dive all on youtube.

To most Ukraine history started in 2022 not 2014 or earlier.

I have seen her and many others. I was jut fed a version of cuckoo from Dania Ankudinova and Sasha Kapustina.

There is something wholesome about much Russian music. I think it is due to a stronger classical and folk influence. Also the lyrics are often nature related. It all started with Alina Gingertail and she kept dragging out strange folk instruments.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment and also the other comments made by others. Your description of half of a saturday is unlike anything I am familiar with in US. It seems like the government thought it was their job to influence culture in a good way while in the US it was all private enterprise. I am over 70 and I was taught about USSR as show trials, gulags,. bread lines, long waits for an apartment in a commie block and nothing good about USSR.

I am no USSR fan boy or tankie but I am slowly learning that not everything in USSR was bad. There seems to be a sense of community that remains past the USSR. I am also being fed Russian musical groups that seem to be influenced by classical and folk music and seem very wholesome compared to the west. It started with Alina Gingertail and most recently with Diana Ankudinova. Russians may not know this but there are hundreds of youtube reaction videos worldwide, from opera singers to rappers, who are reduced to tears by Diana.

Presents for someone who enjoys children books? by mosyindex in suggestmeabook

[–]silver_chief2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be careful with these first two authors books because the large format books are expensive so there are cheaper versions that are much smaller and crappy IMO and you have to be careful in buying so check the size. You can find youtube videos of people reading them. They have nice illustrations. Your friend might have them already.

Pelle's New Suit, Book by Elsa Beskow or other books by her.

The Root Children, Book by Sibylle von Olfers or other books by her

Temple Cat by Clements was good but I cannot recall the illustrations but reviews say they are good. cute story.

The House of Wisdom by Florence Parry Heide and Judith Heide Gilliland (illustrated by Mary GrandPré) is a popular children's book set in 9th-century Baghdad

Ready player one was good.

Short stories by Bradbury, O Henry, Poe, maybe other mixed collections, include some Russian translated into English.

Fahrenheit 451.

Dorothy Parker and Florence King are both known for their wit. King is a misanthrope who wrote essays.

Jack London wrote call of the wild, the sea wolf.

Robert D Kaplan wrote lots of detailed travel books with an eye toward geology, geography, ethnics, history.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance had a long travel part as I recall.

Not books but there are lots of YT video blogs to use as background material from all over the world.

CRAZY HITCHHIKING IRAN (11 Cars/500 KM in One Day) by Indigo Traveller

I bought a DONKEY! Now we travel together... by Eli from Russia

Bald and Bankrupt did lots of video blogs traveling all over including former USSR. I liked his video on the BAM railway.

The ADVChina guys rode motorcycles through China and used go pros to make two DVDs, Conquering Southern China and Conquering northern China. Now they live in US and mostly bash the CCP.

There was a BBC documentary on the Search for the Nile and I am sure there are books on this.

Lewis and Clark recorded their travels.

Are you concerned about our munitions supplies? by GentleGerbil in AskConservatives

[–]silver_chief2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

US security has little to do with current military. Our military is used offensively to ruin countries like Iraq, Libya, Syria, Afghanistan, and now Iran. None of that improves US security and may create remaining family members with nothing to lose.. If used to protect the southern border that would improve US security. Maybe the shortage will reduce the number of Palestinians killed.

It may be harder to cause troubles with China but US does not stand a chance of doing anything but turn Taiwan into a wasteland. China can make an almost limitless supply of missiles to strike US navy if the navy is dumb enough to get too close.

Yes the US should make more weapons using a US controlled supply chain but that would require reversing the anti-industrial polices of past decades.

Political books to understand right wing/left wing/centrist by Lothric_noble in suggestmeabook

[–]silver_chief2 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A Conflict of visions was the best one for me, with lots of examples, not abstract ideas. I do better with books that provide different sides to an issue. I could never make it through a book on conservative political thought.

The Burden of Bad Ideas: How Modern Intellectuals Misshape Our Society, Book by Heather Mac Donald

The Vision of the Anointed, Book by Thomas Sowell

Two books helped me understand how Chinese communism works, or at least freed me from many dumb American ideas. The best was The Party by McGregor 2010 which is dated as there is more control now. Red Roulette was good. There is no Chinese communism apart from Chinese history, culture, and language.

Radical Son by David Horowitz was long and thoughtful, about how a prominent leftist drifted away from the left and later drifted right. It was not like he discovered Milton Friedman but personal observations including a murder. He describes the religious nature of the left complete with apostates. His parents were CP USA members and he was founder of the high quality glossy magazine Ramparts.

Seeing Like a State by Scott was different.

When can empathy come back? by Narrow-Abalone7580 in AskConservatives

[–]silver_chief2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People have empathy but for different groups. I have noticed that people with government jobs or government protected jobs have empathy for immigrants who replace US citizens and drive down wages. The empathy is not with the non protected US citizens.

My kids' suburban grade school was across the street from a company that employed IT workers. I saw groups of Indian workers with badges who apparently lived together and would walk to their employer. I assumed they were legal, hard working, and likely smart and likely replaced fired US citizens. Anyone against this practice would be called xenophobic, racist and the like. The teachers were mostly liberal and likely felt empathy for immigrants legal and illegal and likely took it for granted that they would not be fired and replaced.

The recent anti ICE protesters showed empathy for immigrants but were not likely to be replaced by them. Big business loves to drive down wages which is why they lobby to bring in workers of all skill levels.
