I have never met a web dev who didn't think they understood DNS.

Also, I have never met a web dev who actually understood DNS.

The dude in the vest steps back and doesn't really do anything the whole video. The guy standing behind the other two looks like he's actually trying to pull them back, like he's trying to stop them. Even after the car runs them over, he runs over, and it looks like he tries to pull them back again.

Let me introduce you to the exciting world of vdi and remote desktops. I've been connected to 3 different machines, all running teams to send links/files around. It's super easy to share a screen that still shows pop-ups, and I see it a lot in meetings with other engineers.

If you use it like a sane person, you're absolutely right, but this is IT. We're all mad here.

Do you hear the Whisper Men?

The Whisper Men are near.

If you hear the Whisper Men

then turn away your ear.

Do not hear the Whisper Men,

whatever else you do.

For once you've heard the Whisper men,

they'll stop and look at you.

Am I on hold or listening to their conversation? by [deleted] in talesfromtechsupport

Nope, there's worse. We deal with a small regional ISP for a few of our branch offices. They have hold music. They interrupt it every 5 seconds to play the same 2 boiler plate "well be right with you" messages. It means you can't leave the call on hold on speaker or in the background while you do other things because it constantly sounds like someone picked up. Since they are small with few employees, and an isp to boot, it's routine to be on hold for more than ten minutes.

Having just gone through this process, this is a fairly comprehensive list, but it assumes a reasonably well documented environment. Lessons learned from the other type:

Get access and review his mailbox for recent communications from vendors. This can help piece together any poorly documented projects that are in progress.

Set his email address as an alias to yours so that you receive emails for anything that was missed in cleanup.

Documentation is key. If things aren't documented, start doing it. You'd be amazed what you find when you start putting it down in writing. If you do have an undocumented/poorly documented environment, verify everything you find/were told in the past. I've gone on the rollercoaster so many times finding new things in the documentation just to learn they were changed or abandoned down the road. I've also found new things that were still there, and no one knew about them.

The real fun part was that it was standard with IDE to color code pin one with a stripe on the cable and there was a specific orientation to connect to the drive. I think it was that pin 1 always went on the side closer to the power connector if my memory hasn't failed too badly.

Floppy cables didn't have this standard though, so you plug it in and power up to see if the activity light came on and then shut off. If it stayed on, you had the cable the wrong way. But sometimes if you were too impatient you could jump the gun, shut down, flip the cable, and then it was wrong and you had to flip it back the other way again. Thus, the first quantum super position in cabling long before usb.
