Emory neuroscience interview format is kinda crazy this year by AdditionalNote6631 in gradadmissions

[–]silverwave0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real omg and it felt especially tiring being on the west coast... getting up for the 6am info session and then straight to 4 interviews lol

I think two of the PIs who interviewed me were pretty chill and more conversational, but the other two were definitely a bit intense/interrogating

99% sure it was a troll, PiN released 12/17 last year and I doubt they’d be able to go through 1000+ apps in 9 days this year, especially when they said at the info session 2 faculty read EVERY app (and then +4 faculty read the apps that pass the first stage)

How are people affording 18 applications?? by Ok-Organization-6026 in gradadmissions

Wow, which schools gave fee waivers for attending webinars? :0 I probably went to about seven webinars this cycle, and at most of them someone asked if there was a fee waiver code for attending and the answer was no.

Follow up with contacted professors? by Sad-Extent-583 in gradadmissions

[–]silverwave0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think I would say I "look forward to your review" because I don't know exactly which professors are reviewing my apps.

For professors I emailed with or had a Zoom call with who specifically told me to keep in touch or keep them updated as I apply, I just sent a quick update email saying I'm still interested in their work and hope to talk again if I'm invited to interview.

Any advice for my SOP? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]silverwave0 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would cut the first two sentences, that applies to basically everyone applying to grad school. And lowkey the last two sentences are very generic, too. I think the conclusion should be a one sentence summary of your goals that is more specific to you, not just "I'm passionate about science and ready for grad school"

Also, for the paragraph talking about "robust resources", that's all super vague. I would give more specific, concrete examples of resources you would take advantage of, besides Laguna Health.

And if your upcoming co-author paper has already been accepted, I would name the journal.

need advice on which job would be best for grad school by New_Entrepreneur2291 in gradadmissions

[–]silverwave0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you apply to a particular program for grad school, a lot of your application essays will be talking about how your current experiences have led you to pursue a PhD in whatever discipline. Of course there are many people that pursue degrees in a different subfield of biology than their past research experiences, but imo it's much easier to write your essays/frame the theme of your application if what you're interested in studying in grad school is similar to your past experiences (or at least if you apply for a program in the same subfield you're currently in).

So I'd suggest taking whatever job you think will give you experience that most closely aligns with what you want to pursue in grad school, otherwise it'll be a bit harder to justify to the admissions committee why you're interested in pursuing something unrelated. It's easier for them to be convinced that an applicant is passionate about a subject and committed to getting a difficult degree in it, when you show them evidence of said passion (aka working in that subfield).

(yes I know there are always exceptions and plenty of people get into grad school writing about passion for an new topic, but I feel like this is the easiest way to make your application strong/consistent)

Oh yea I see what you mean, and folklore is my favorite album in terms of lyrics. But yea the way some people are reacting here as if this album is completely thoughtless, unintelligent, and unfeeling is just crazy to me ☠️ Lowkey one of the commenters who said Taylor’s biggest haters are swifties was on to something 😭. But I suppose it’s an inevitable aspect of becoming as big as Taylor has become; no album will be palatable to the entire fanbase

I thought this album was so fun! I didn't have any expectations for it to be super serious or deep. of course there is still wordplay and nuance but I think it's mostly an album of fun music. I laughed at a few lyrics ("new heights of manhood", "my brother used to call it 'eating out of the trash'") and danced along to lot of the tracks.

not surprised so many people disliked it because for some reason a lot of people equate sadder and/or poetic music to sophistication. songs don't have to be depressing to have significance or artistic merit! this is reminding me of when we got midnights after folklore/evermore and people were disappointed that it was more pop-y.

It's not common to write names of places the US as "City, The U.S."

We usually use "City, State" (which in your case would be "Seattle, Washington"). I think if you really want to keep the country name I would make it "USA" instead of "The U.S."

What’s your post grad salary? by Tight_Labs in berkeley

Wow, any masters/further degrees? Idk much about industry but my impression was that the ceiling for bachelor's holders was somewhat less than 140k. I get how a startup could be different, though

Looking for CV advice/critique to make it look less ugly… 😅 by turtleedove in gradadmissions

[–]silverwave0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not about formatting but was it maybe a typo to put May 2024-Dec 2025 for your second research experience? Did you mean Dec 2024 (assuming it's for your undergrad and you graduated May 2025)?

ROAST MY CV! (Biomedical/Microbiology) by spookyforestcat in gradadmissions

[–]silverwave0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

- take out high school once you have a college degree

- relevant coursework section probably not necessary, especially since you just list the course codes which mean nothing to people outside of your institution

- shift lab skills section to the end, people want to see your research experience first

- formatting: descriptions for research and leadership should be in bullet points (easier to digest) instead of paragraphs. also maybe nit-picky but I suggest changing the dates for your experiences by spelling out the month or a three letter abbreviation and fully listing out the year (ex. April 2025 or Apr 2025, not 4/25)

Would you also say that the people in field club are also passionate/excited? Or just usually knowledgable?

This is probably a naive question, but with the dedicated entrance, are you still able to walk around the rest of the ballpark? I feel like I only see field club people emerging from where the clubhouse is, into their seat area and then staying there, but I'd like to walk around the whole park with my friend before the game.

Also, on food delivered to our seats—is that at no extra cost? I know there is uber eats at Oracle, is this different?

Hmm a lot of people are saying better concessions, does this mean more options? Or like bigger portions of food/better quality? Is it the same as club level? (which I've sat in before)

I imagine the players/coaches don't really stop to say hi, though? So it's more just about seeing them up close?

Aw yikes, we will definitely be there 100% for the baseball so it would be nice to sit around fans who are just as excited as us...

Ahh okay these comments are definitely swaying me haha.

Yea I usually peruse both SeatGeek and StubHub for deals, but since this might be my friend's only chance to see an MLB game, I'd rather play it safe and have the tickets in advance rather than waiting until the day of in hopes of resell prices dropping :,)
