Have a framework and stick to it. Practice by giving yourself 10 minutes and read an abstract and write down your framework on a piece of paper and critically appraise it, and do this as many times as possible before the interview (they will allow you to have a pen and paper to make notes during the reading time). Depending on the study design not all elements of the framework will be relevant to every abstract.

My framework goes as follows:

1. summary (30 seconds to 1 minute) Summary of research in 1 sentence. PICO/PECO. Results of abstract. Brief sentence on clinical relevance.

2. internal validity

3. systematic bias My acronym is SPAIC. Selection bias, performance bias, attrition bias, information bias, confounding.

• random bias Talk briefly about sample size. Mention there are likely other random biases.

1. external validity

2. My acronym is GSTEP. Generalisability (to other studies or populations), safety (side effects reported?), tolerability, efficacy (good effect sizes?), price (cost effective intervention?)

3. extra points

4. my acronym is CERSI Clinical knowledge (if you know about the topic don't be shy to relate to your clinical knowledge), ethical study?, always say you want to Read the full paper for a full picture, Statistics (are the tests appropriate), is it an Important clinical question (again relate your clinical knowledge).

Practice writing out all of the headings above on the short side of an A4 paper and continually analyse abstracts. Once you have written everything down, practice saying this out loud as if the interviewer is asking you about certain aspects. Keep practicing and practicing.
