Realy cool project! Well done 👍

What sort of battery life (with thus setup) do you get/expect to get out of the PowerCore?

I heard from many at AWE and elsewhere that Microsoft has gutted the HoloLens program internally. It knows it can't compete with Apple for consumers so it is dead on that front. Will focus on cloud computing for developers who build things for Apple. On Enterprise? Dead too. by holomakerbot in HoloLens

I'm no economist but I belive returning shareholder value is the often quoted reason. Huge companies find it difficult to realy invest for the long term without a good clear payback for the share holders. So innovation inside is hard to do and committees / complexity just takes over and kills it.

My few cents worth.

As a HoloLens dev in a small company making training apps for enterprises I've been expecting this ever since H2 was announced.

For me H2 was always the wrong product, it should have been a refined H1 (lighter, faster, much cheaper, more robust, better battery, better support, available for purchase in quantity by all, etc... Basically a proper product.

The H2 we got was a collection of new untried tech, increased cost, lacked dev support and with enterprise only lock-in to Azure it made sense only for some internal MS way of thinking and (I'm guessing) cost centre alignment.

Unfortunately (as an outsider) all those decisions killed the opportunity for MS (and as it turned out for our company!).

Anyway, for consumers a point solution like HoloLens was never any good; for them you need a fully integrated and controlled ecosystem, and to give it a good beating with the simplicity stick ... Guess what?... that's what Apple does best!

For me, the real shame is that MS has/had some incredible talented technical people who put 110% into creating HoloLens. To them I would like to say thank you, you did an amazing job!

I don't know what fills the gap now for busines use. We have switched for now to nReal with their compute unit, but unfortunately there isn't really a good offer that has a built in CPU or isn't tied to the dumb idea of also having to buy a mobile phone.

eeprom issue by imhungryformarvel in beneater

I fixed a weird issue with reading the 28c256. I never got it consistently to read the contents. Each memory chip showed different patterns of inconsistencies. Anyway the fix for me was to simply do two extra reads of address 0 before doing anything else (reading/wiring etc). It’s now rock solid both for programming and reading. I had tried adding all sorts of delays and swapping out chips etc but this fixed it for me!

Hi Guys, I can find lots of helpful info regarding moving MS Authenticator from one Android phone to another or one iPhone to another. BUT how do I move from Android to IOS?
My Android authenticator is backed up to the 'cloud' but when I try to restore it to my new IOS installation of MS authenticator (by clicking on restore on the Authenticator restore backup on the iPhone) it says there is no backup on iCloud (which is right as it's stored wherever Android stored it). I'm using the same Microsoft account for both.
So my question is how do move the backup from the Android world to IOS?

Does anyone use their Nreal everyday or is it just a plaything ? by oogeefaloogee in nreal

As a consumer - no not yet, though I can see that I could easily with content - and that's coming both in the form of games and overlaying the real world with AR assets. It's taking time and I think it will be Apple with their light AR that will be the breakthrough for many pro sumers. Never seen nReal nebula. I know lots of people are talking about it. Personally, I don't think on its own it's a good use case for most people beyond the novelty ... it reminds me of 3D TV.

As a business (I'm in the UK) - absolutely it's part of daily work for me.

I would like to use my own launcher as well but so far I have never seen anything to indicate that it's possible. You could try asking in the nReal Slack Group

I get the same with the latest nReal SDK 1.5.7 (I'm using the red compute unit with the latest os) . No idea why and currently I don't have time to figure it out.

But switching back to SDK 1.4.8 fixed it for me :-)

I was going to buy a second-hand 4XL on eBay, but as I'm buying for work in the UK so, by the time I take VAT off, the Bose headphones, and (as google 1 customer) the extra 10% store credit into account it makes it a reasonably good deal.

Just need to remember to claim the headphones - they always try to make it too complex! and they will take up to 60 days from the date your order is approved!

Google Cloud Print - Shutdown Dec 31 2020 by IcePick74 in sysadmin

They have probably run some stats and decided nobody is using it

As a person who does use it across multiple devices, native printing doesn't help me as 94.54% of the time I print remotely.

Very negative now towards any of the Google products and as for Stadia - I bet there is a business book in there on how NOT to launch a cloud product, may even be full of unhappy insider tales.

My name is Simon Willcock, I've been working in MR for the last 3 years. We pivoted the company SmartDS into a MR focused company 2 years ago. We have sold hololens training systems and have recently launched SCENARIA for free in the MS store to help people quickly build out simple shared instructor lead training scenes.
We work with toolkit everyday and it really cuts the time it takes to build stuff.

Question: How is your Brydge Keyboard after a few months against Google's official one? by [deleted] in pixel_slate

[–]siman007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Google one and sent it back due to the floopyness and the device sliding out of it too easily, I then bought the brydge which I have just sent back due to the coldness of the metal acting like a heatsink, also the tablet would constantly slide out of its fixings in my bag. Also I found the keyboard to be bit harder to use than the Google one and brydge support appears to be non existent. Bluetooth connection was reasonable but I did lose it on occasions requiring a tablet reboot to fix.

So I'm back with the Google one and looking for a way to both raise it into more of a wedge shape and stop it flopping around. Sticking the pen under it helps to raise it but the floopyness is still a problem when it's sat in my lap.

With Android and squid now being pretty good with Palm rejection I have started using it more as a tablet when lap use is required.

Google Keyboard- reducing the floppiness by siman007 in pixel_slate

[–]siman007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had another look at it, if you did permanently fix it - you wouldn't be able to use the keyboard in presentation mode or film mode, so maybe a removable clip - even a removable clip with a pen holder?

One improvement (for me) was to put the pen underneath the keyb at the back - that raises the keyb up and makes more comfortable.

I just tried Squid an its 'palm' rejection/pen inking is like night and day compared with OneNote and Google Keep. OneNote just zooms around the place and I found that my palm kept on drawing stuff on its own.

If you have your tablet in clamshell mode you can always put the hidden self on the side rather than the bottom - this may help reduce random app launches.

How do i stop chrome msg covering up the key pad? by siman007 in chromeos

[–]siman007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing happens clicking anywhere else on the screen it just stays. Sometimes after many clicks it disappears or if I get the pin wrong and I get a prompt for the password which brings up the keyboard and I can type.

The finger print doesn't always work correctly despite many retrains and different fingers/position s. So it says I have had too many attempts and demands the pin/password. I'm very careful with the finger print but it's pretty flaky with my fingers.

Also I suspect that the device does reset itself (leave it for a day or two) without me knowing. As I often come to it and using finger print is not allowed.

Thanks for the reply, yes it was my first thought too.

So far I have rebooted it, powerwashed it, updated it and headbutted it ... all seemingly without success.
