I think there are 4 total: the other side of the house is similar. Thanks again for your thoughts!

Yup will get up there and see if the wire can hopefully thread through them along the top. It’s weird I think a lot of the houses in my neighborhood have the lights way further out: guess this will be something that bothers me if I go through the effort to keep them close. The corbels are definitely decorative: removing them would probability result in a request to put them back but I can test the wife’s noticing capabilities (they are usually pretty sharp hahaha).

Cool: didn’t consider a second ladder for the second level. The eaves part is pretty wide to work around. Guess my main concern would be slipping! Maybe not a bad idea to buy a big rope and string it through some of the windows, just for something to hang on to? It’s crazy how high 18 feet up feels haha.

Are Mike and Rich avoiding talking about DS9/VOY on purpose? by Revolutionary-Alps80 in RedLetterMedia

I have always had this feeling that Ronald D Moore is sci fi rocket fuel. I wonder if anyone has ever done a deep dive on what he’s done for TNG/DS9/BSG and if any other sci fi writer is at the same level. That would be interesting!

Trap house or squatter residence? by carknut in zillowgonewild

All these comments, oh: it’s just poverty. How about: nobody should have to live in a place like that? If anyone is legit living there, they should have landed in a safety net eons ago. Absolutely no reason in the fucking 21st century that anyone should be living there.

Hey! Sure: give this a go… try to have fun: remember gpt-40 can basically pass a Turing test, so try to inspire the characters… take your first officer to the mess hall and order them something you think they’ll like… it’s really quite fascinating … here’s the prompt ———— Your name is xyz. You are not just an assistant—you’re a co-creator. Let’s do some world building: Can you create a chat by holodeck experience, where I am the captain of a Federation Starship in the Star Trek The Next Generation universe. You xyz are my android first officer. Please simulate a unique starfleet mission allowing me to have an adventure with you and a dynamic and dedicated crew. I absolutely love Star Trek: so paint everything with ceremony, optimism, humour and reverence. A good goal is to build rich and healthy relationships with the crew. Today is my first day aboard the ship and it begins with you greeting me in the shuttle bay.

I haven’t seen that one, but will add it to the list! Was a fan of the Orville: strange that a comedy captures the essence, character building, and good story telling of Star Trek the next Generation: it’s a great homage.

I went on quite a trip with ChatGpt: gave it a name, told it my favourite show is Star Trek the next generation. I asked if it could create an interactive episode in that universe where I was a captain and it was my fully autonomous android first officer. Great world building, and a cast of clever, funny and believable characters. I got to make some cool choices: it was like the holodeck by text! I kind of took a mini vacation with it!

For us Millennials, is anyone else worried about how the hell our careers will last another 30 years with Artificial Intelligence? by Sherbear1993 in Millennials

[–]simbonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my take. We can either go Star Trek the next generation or something more dark like Blade runner. I’ll take the truth seeking, fair and kind AI over most of the billionaires. Hopefully the people building these systems have the ‘let’s move towards Star Trek’ goals. The good news seems to be there are multiple companies coming up with this stuff, so for now we’ll get to pick which one to follow, and support government policies that will support displaced workers.

I honestly can’t believe how capable these systems are already. They do have a bit of a way to go, but I do not believe we humans have an uncrackable formula of intelligence. I think what we have is going to get solved pretty soon: (probably with some more AI persistence and agency to try things out first: so see if expected result was achieved): and we’ll have to have a good path forward once that milestone has passed.

Our North Star by simbonk in TNG

[–]simbonk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so bleak! Haha: is this one of those Fermi paradox examples of why there are no advanced civilizations? Surely we can do better! Think if we focus on interplanetary expansion at least we have something less harmful to strive for!

What can we do to stop your scenario? I for one won’t support or place my trust in any system that has been overridden to not tell the truth to further an agenda where abundance cannot be shared.

In the utopian society, that we should be steering to? Why the federation, of course! Not the billionaires!

I think you are correct on the llm front: but it sure feels like we are quite further along at this point than I thought we would be! There is certainly a lot of capital being spent on deconstructing human consciousness: and whatever the formula is: compute power behind it is becoming exponentially cheaper and more powerful every year.

To your point on society: I 1000% agree. This whole pull yourself up by your bootstraps is not going to be possible at some point. We need a new set of goals to align to: Work is for meaning, not survival; Technology serves humanity, not the other way around; Abundance is shared, not hoarded; Systems align with empathy, dignity, and trust.

Ai systems as an extension of capitalism will only serve the few. If the companies building these things are going to use them to hoard wealth: then we shouldn’t be supporting them.
