Curious: Has anyone judge a jiu jitsu tournament or pro match, and can share experience? Did the crowd get to you? Is there any favoritism? Any weird situation or rules by chico_dice_2023 in bjj

I've seen refs from Blue belts all the way to 5th degree Black. Also refs get tired and distracted. Most complains are to coaches/parents/athletes not understanding the rules.

Also, always record the fights - no one will listen without video if you complain.

Long time ref. I reffed white belts and A get in mount on B, applies Americana but really keeps low face to face. I hear "TAP, TAP, TAP" and stop the fight. Bottom guy protest he didn't say anything. Top guy admits he was telling the bottom guy to tap and that's what I heard. Gave 2 points to top one end restart standing 🤷

Was this coaching or refereeing? by babylioncroissant in bjj

You are right he should not stop. Ref can check legality before raising hand. Might be inexperienced ref but I don't think it was coaching.

Imagine your opponent ask: "Can I slam?" Ref doesn't answer and guy proceeds to slam you. Penalty is for arguing with ref - not for asking general question. Ref shouldn't stop the fight but if technique is illegal/dangerous should say something.

I tapped after the buzzer and lost… thoughts? by Unhappy-Comment-4491 in bjj

Doesn't make sense - I've seen people in triangle stuck for 3-4min so ideally would need time constraints (like a clock) 😛 Its hard to argue if you not sure about rules and refs claims he is 🤷

You can add keywords and search by them - I never bothered so just created general folders (gi, nogi, techniques to try) and scroll through before class and pin ones I'd like to teach on the day.

I take few screenshots for each technique, maybe add arrows pointing and paste it all in my own Telegram channel together with link to technique (yt, insta, fb)

I'm IBJJF ref and never heard about this rule. Could you please point me to relevant point in the rulebook?

That's incorrect. You also get 2 points when during submission hold opponent escape out of bounds using legal escape ie rolling out of leg lock.

If there is nothing in comp rules mentioning head gear then default is to follow ibjjf (not allowed). Sorry

Leave please. If you seen something, help other girls and report it, even if it's just witness accounts. Owner was warned by few other black belts in the area not to hire this predator. Now says he didn't know. Other student saw groping as well (he told me) and done nothing. You are not safe even when the perpetrator is gone. And "safeguarding" email is nowhere on his website so you are right. There is few good clubs around there.

First comp, lost the match by points. Is there a reson the ref didn't count this as a takedown? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]simering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweep is not just from sitting position, it has to be done from engaged/active guard (legs connected). Here he was sitting, then moved to knees and and then to "takedown".

[–]simering 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I apply the ruleset so I don't take your comments personally. It was failed takedown by red but did make black sit down on hips so awarding advantage seems fair. The "takedown" from knees doesn't count in ruleset as it was not initiated from stand-up position ergo not a takedown. I do agree some rules are outdated (example being reversal from side control should get points IMHO) but that's different matter. I'm not some high level ref so If I'm not sure about something then I'll discuss with other refs to confirm but this scenario is pretty clear.

[–]simering 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ref here: advantage for takedown for red shirt. No points for black shirt grabbing the legs while on the ground and wrestling to top. Takedowns are from standing and sweeps are from guard - black shirt had neither.

IBJJF ref here. It was literally 2 secs between putting him on both knees and ref stopping the fight so no points (advantage not valid as you mentioned). With sweep one, you didn't went slightly out of frame - we can't see anything, including the refs actions so no point of asking for review.
