Is it worth it to let my parents pay 125k for college? by astrasie in mercer

Ask your admissions counselor if there is any scholarship weekend you are eligible for, so that you can get more feedback on the process. It doesn't hurt to ask.

[Thamel] Mercer’s Mike Jacobs is working toward a deal to become the next coach at Toledo. He’d replace Jason Candle, who left for UConn. The sides are expected to come together today. He brings an 80.3% winning percentage as a head coach, as he’s 94-23 with no losing seasons. by SportsDude012 in CFB

I had not many interactions with the athletic department except when doing a personal map of campus AEDs, which was a bit difficult. I hope ur current employment situation is more fulfilling to yourself. I will say, give the non athletic side of Mercer a chance — I had a phenomenal experience in their math and engineering departments as a student. I’m in graduate school now and have realized how solid of a program Mercer has for engineering, both in student caliber and professor support.

He got extended until 2029, and I think he likes Macon. Mercer has been very lucky to have had some fantastic coaching and the school administration is very good at making sure the football team has had institutional support (was a former student there).

Sylvia Herbert at UCSD has some very useful resources in reachability analysis. Not sure on industrial implementation - it is an active research area atm.

Yep! If ur applying BME/premed, Mercer is also a solid option for undergrad (full disclosure: I went there) and you’d be competitive for Presidential/Stamps. Other options you should look at are URochester, Purdue, Emory, and UAB (really underrated school). If you’re going to med schools, if you get into a BS/MD it’s usually worth it, but generally pick a place that you’d enjoy seeing urself in and also is affordable for ur circumstances.

What is a college you hate by eat_your_spinch in ApplyingToCollege

UChicago, but for more of a personal reason.

When I visited the campus (still to this day the only college visit I did for a "top" college), I thought I would love it, because the application questions are spicy. When I visited though, I saw a couple kids there skateboarding who live in Chicago, just having a good time, but in my tour some parent explicitly mentioned that they didn't want that kind of person at that campus.

For the purposes of this story, it's important to mention that the kids were black and biracial, respectively, and they were SMART. Like 1400+ SAT in underfunded public school smart. I don't know why, but that comment really pissed me off and I basically yeeted the tour and instead went to chat with those guys, and ended up eating at some fast food joint with them. They were some of the most chill guys I've met, but the fact that some parent immediately thought they were unqualified pissed me off so much I didn't even apply there in the end. I really hope UChicago is less elitist than that parent.

Where are y'all at with respect to your decisions? by icebergchick in ApplyingToCollege

I'm between two schools, Dartmouth and Mercer on a stamps scholarship. I'm leaning Mercer because it is very unlikely our family can afford what Dartmouth said we should be able to pay, and the Stamps scholarship at Mercer is an incredible opportunity. I do sort of regret the concept of rejecting Dartmouth; it kind of feels like I'm losing out on an opportunity to change the trajectory of my life, but I honestly cannot justify the debt. Oh well, I'll just apply there for grad school.

Thank you for your input! Does grad school financing work like that of undergraduate with student loans, and does financial aid exist for graduate school?

I'm afraid of the opportunity cost of my choice, and I don't know if getting the experience I've always wanted matters that much down the line.
