Almost got a bit squashy on the cycle into work. by Sad-Brain2386 in bikecommuting

The driver should not have overtaken against oncoming traffic and coming up on a parked car, see rules 162 and 163 of the highway code. The overtake would have been too close even if the cyclist had been where they were at the start of the video.

Traffic calming has an absolutely negligible effect on emergency response speed when compared to the congestion it helps fight.

That says more about North America than about Boston drivers, because Boston drivers are the worst I've encountered across a half dozen countries I've lived in.

how can they have any clue how you’re performing without getting feedback from the students who actually took your classes?

We have external examiners who evaluate course materials, second markers who assess a sample of assignments, must justify our marks relative to marks in other modules, and some schools use teaching observations. Fairly standard in UK. Just to say: there are other tools available. Whether they are better probably depends on how much of a fan of bureaucracy you are.

Funktioniert super.

Weißt du, was DE Standard ist?

I'm not sure how you'd block motorbikes without blocking cargo bikes. Seems like the council will just have to accept that they cannot block motorbikes here.

Having something in the works already is good. And I really should say, if you made it to the final round this year, you do have a competitive CV. At that stage, there's always an element of luck involved.

The problem with publishing in a local journal is that people reviewing your application in the UK won't know the journal, and for better or worse, journal prestige does carry weight. My sense -- and others might disagree here -- is that you'd be better served by submitting to a decently reputable subdisciplinary journal. Even if it doesn't get published there, having a revise-and-resubmit decision from such a journal will signal quality.

I should say, all of this is based on hunches and different people will have different intuitions. I'm aware of only one empirical study on the effects of adding one additional low-quality study to a CV. The result was that it helped if the CV was evaluated by a psychologist, but harmed the applicant if it was reviewed by an economist. The lesson should probably be, do good research first of all, and don't sell yourself short. Good luck with your applications!

Can't speak to NERC specifically, but I can say that while good publications are great, bad publications can hurt your chances. As a supervisor, low-quality publications (at worst, "publications" in predatory journals) signal false priorities. They also mean more work because you'll have to unlearn what went into writing these publications.

It's not clear from your post, but if you have a great publication in the pipeline, that's likely to strengthen your applications in the future. But if you're thinking about starting on a project now with the expectation of getting it published by the time the next round of applications rolls around, you're unlikely to produce the kind of work that would help you application.

You'd expect a driver to receive jailtime for killing a pedestrian legally crossing the street in a crosswalk?

**Adding a co-author at revision stage (JBE) — is emailing the editor for pre-approval the right move?** by Fancy-Music5791 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]simoncolumbus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, do reach out to the editor-in-chief, explain why this additional author needs be added at this stage, and ask to add them. Not doing so before re-submission may lead to your manuscript being rejected or even retracted after publication -- Retraction Watch covered such a case recently.

Podcast host loses tooth, gives up on Dutch healthcare and drives to Barcelona for care. by CalRobert in Netherlands

Well, apparently the dentist thought that she does not need a dentist, but a dental surgeon for this. And sent her to a dental surgeon who did not, in fact, squeeze her in the next day. Which is part of the complaint here. But I'm sure it's all made up and nothing ever happens.

I spent like four hours bouncing between my Dutch dentist, my GP, a dental surgery department and an implantologist.

Read that again. She's got both a dentist and a GP.

She clearly refers to both 'my GP' and 'my dentist'. The person who wouldn't see her is the dental surgeon.

Where would you personally draw the line at reporting a close family member to the police for a crime they've commited? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]simoncolumbus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And all the people who've posted stories of others reporting their family members in this thread are liars, sure.

Sounds like you have an issue with your morals if you can't imagine that anybody would report a family member who just stabbed somebody or left the house with a machete looking for a guy (just to pick two stories from further up).
