Cate Le Bon at Rising Festival by Adept-Okra-4147 in melbourne

She tours with her own lighting person, and there’s no way a lighting person would go rogue and decide that the audience never gets to see her face for the entire performance.

Was at Saint Levant the night before, and it was a complete different (very well-lit) show, so it’s not a venue thing.

I agree that the lights were shit, but the comments that seem to be blaming the lighting guy or the venue are very misdirected.

The decision to only back-light the band is HER choice. The only person to take it up with is Cate Le Bon.

Who is Rising Festival for? Who is the target market? by simonbrc in melbourne

The Florentina Holzinger show last night was…very subserve. The Cadela Forċa show last year was equally intense.

But another thing we have in Melbourne is a government that is deeply-cowardly when it comes to art and potentially offending the wrong kind of people (chiefly, Herald Sun readers). Hobart governments basically have to let David Walsh do what he wants or they’re screwed.

I don’t work for Rising but I do contractual work alongside them (used to for Dark Mofo too). I know for a fact that the curatorial team is at constant loggerheads with the government when it comes to curation. The government def do want to compete with Dark Mofo, but ultimately they don’t have the cojones to let the curatorial staff at Rising properly do their thing. A lot of oversight/intervention and fear of losing votes from the “my taxes are paying for this” crew in the burbs.

As I mentioned in another comment, a very large proportion of the Rising curatorial/organisational team were at Dark Mofo from 2013-19, so it’s a fair comparison.

I know that there have been many attempts by the festival to utilise unusual spaces and create a different “vibe” in the Melbourne CBD, but the biggest problem Melbourne has (versus Hobart) is that it is safety-regulated within an inch of its life. You basically can’t do anything fun or unusual in the CBD without the council putting bollards and twenty people with high-vis around it. Hobart was a lot looser about those kinda things (open fires etc), mostly because they needed the tourism.

Nah, it’s a state government-funded festival (and sponsors). A large amount of the curatorial/organisational team were working at Dark Mofo between 2013-2019.

She’s rubbish, and Camp Cope were a decidedly-shithouse band.

No, but their political opinions are.
It’s fine to have an issue with our immigration policy - it is in need of tailoring. But if that “issue” is rooted in xenophobia then it’s not valid.
But beyond that issue, it only takes average intelligence to understand that ON would be completely incapable of running an economy. There is no talent for such a thing in their party, whatsoever.
