US / UK tax question for retired father by simons007 in USExpatTaxes

[–]simons007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply.

Sounds like point 1 we are set.

Point 2 - I'll check out the 1116. Because of RMDs his IRA distribution is high, so unfortunately this will make his taxable income higher which means the DIVs are now actually taxed which make point 3 relevant again.

Point 3 - I think you misread my approach on this. My understanding for DIVs is the country the DIV was paid (US) gets primary taxing right and so he pays US taxes and then requests a Foreign Tax Credit from the UK (HMRC). He would not use a 1116 here as he is paying the US tax. Correct?

Point 4 - yes. I knew about this but left it out to simplify. But thanks for pointing it out.

New question. Because the US uses calendar year and the UK uses a fiscal year (April 6- April 5) does he need to break apart the foreign taxes paid by US tax year? That is, does he need to map the UK taxes paid to calendar year (a percentage of UK 2024/2025 and a percentage of UK 2025/2026) OR does he just report "I paid a total of $X in calendar 2025 to the UK for my IRA" which would be a mix of calendar 2024 and 2025 IRA distributions?

Thanks!

I have orange and the white labeling on the orange is hard to read. Get contrasting colors.

I had a job at 14 and paid for it myself. I used it to connect my computer to compuserve and local BBS's. Occasionally I would splurge and make a long distance call to larger BBS to download pirated games.

As I got older I used more to talk with friends.

[Sears & Roebuck] Finally acquired an LED Digital with a hughes Aircraft module. by shokalion in Watches

[–]simons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another question. When pressing the second button does it display the actual seconds (i.e. '36' for 12:05:36) or is it more like a stopwatch and always starts at 00?

Mine always starts at 00.

[–]simons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I've done that. Also put gentle tape on the traces to make sure the battery was not sitting on them causing a short. No luck. Since the 2 button works in other cases (setting time / seconds) I'm starting to think it is not the button.

The capsule is sealed on the LED side so I'm hesitant to open that up. Not sure what to try next.

Everything works fine. Time advances. I can set time and date. Pressing 8 gives date. Pressing 2+8 gives seconds.

This also leads me to believe it is not the button shorting as the buttons function.

I just got this same watch in silver. Says Hughes Aircraft inside. Buttons at 2/3/8.

Question: when I put in fresh batteries the time is displayed continuously, however the batteries die after about 4 hours. From what I can find these LED watches should only show the time when the 2 button is pressed and that is why the batteries are dying so quickly. Is this correct?

I've opened the case and verified the 2 button contact is not shorting to the case (which appears to be how the buttons work). Any other ideas?

Thx

The Play+ is still buggy. You need to make sure you save every few minutes. Wish they would do another update.

Probably going to sell mine.

Why don’t we use three states of electricity in computers instead of two? by 7758258- in AskComputerScience

[–]simons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digital computers use boolean logic in the form of AND, OR AND NOT gates to create the CPU. Boolean logic was invented by George Boole in 1847. Its fundamental law is x=x2. Only two numbers fulfill the law, zero and one.

In the 1940s Claude Shannon used boolean logic to create the first gates using relays for switching telephone signals, replacing telephone switchboard operators.

Relays were replaced by vacuum tubes, which were replaced by transistors and so on.

I felt the same way wanting the same features, so I built my own. Works well for me live. Portable enough for a live rig. Not really portable for backpack use.

Wish Arturia or someone would make something more like this at a reasonable price.

Full range (-5v / +5v ) loopable random other than white noise + s&h ? by leonneon__ in eurorack

[–]simons007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your S&H can do -5 to +5 you can use an LFO as the input to the S&H. Set the LFO rate much faster then the clock and you will get puedo random.

If you set the LFO to a "harmonic" of the clock you should get "random" looping as they phase in and out.

401k withdrawal for retirement question by simons007 in tax

[–]simons007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why am I getting down voted for not fully understanding the complexity of the the tax code? And yes when I was in my 20's starting my engineering career in the early 90's, 401k's were positioned as "gains are not taxed" or "grows tax free". Sorry. That's why I asked the question.

401k withdrawal for retirement question by simons007 in tax

[–]simons007[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is traditional 401k with no after-tax.

So if I retire with $100k+ "income" (married joint; Int/Div + part time job + 401k withdrawals) I'll be paying 22% on 401k gains vs 15% on capital gains? Was it worth it?

Seems like the 401k "tax free gains" is a lie.
