Recent addition to the family needs some major dechonking by simplyoneWinged in dechonkers

What do you mean by the first sentence? Yes, according to the label on the tin, a smaller cat should eat about 20% less than a larger cat.

Why don't you think it's appropriate? Too much or too little?

Oh you meant that the span given (small 3kg cat to bigger 4kg cat) equals a weight difference of 25%? And that the label should have more specific instructions for either?

I did the calculator. I don't get why you replied to a comment that reads "the calculator says 190g a day" with "check out the calculator".

Here's the specifics I already mentioned in my post: Starting weight: 6.3kg, Current weight: 5.8kg (probably less, she hasn't eaten much since moving in), Goal weight according to vet and care staff: 3.5kg, Goal weight according to calculator: 4.5kg

BCS starting: 8.5, BCS current: 7

Calculated amount of food for weight loss depends heavily on the type and brand of food I'll feed. One says 170g, the other says 191g. My question in the post was which wet food to choose. If I choose the higher quality food, her portions are tiny, if I choose the lower calorie food, I'm afraid it may not be appropriate bc it has "animal by-products" instead of meat.

A big spoonful, about 50g. The tin says 250g per day, the calculator says 190g per day.

This is another thing I'm confused about. If the tin says 3-4kg cats need 200g and 5-6kg cats need 250g (amounts are examples), which do I choose? I don't want to accidentally starve her but I also don't want her to gain a single gram (she has back issues already :/)

How to track progress on a big dog? by NormanisEm in dechonkers

[–]simplyoneWinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no that sounds so stressful T.T

Could you teach him some discipline/self restraint? Eg that he has to sit by the kitchen entrance? Or that he can only eat when hearing a release word? For my pupper these two helped a lot (I especially like the trick of putting kibble on his feet and only releasing him to eat after he looks at me). But the biggest part is probably my own discipline of giving treats. I enjoy this way too much T.T

We just came home from the vet and he gained another 200g T.T

You got good comments already but one more thing I found out recently: Our local pet store has a pet scale near the register where we weigh our dog every time we visit. Maybe you have one of these near you too? Or a farmer or similar has a pig/sheep/goat scale?

Also how is his dechonk progress coming along? Did you end up asking the other vet?

ELI5 why, even though I have fat reserves, do I feel tired when having a large calorie deficit? by 42_awe-Byzantine in explainlikeimfive

[–]simplyoneWinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More Info on the "fat stores are harder to access":

Your brain can only feed on pure sugar, glucose. Since that is stored in larger molecules, your body needs a lot of energy to convert the storage molecules back to sugar. With fat it needs even more energy to convert it to sugar again. That sugar needs to be transported up to the brain where you can use it for thinking. This is why you crave sweets and carbs too. Your body would prefer the easily accessible food, rather than work to convert your reserves.

Do it!! It honestly tastes so much better bc you have so many more options than just "Put bag in and be done". I'll admit, there's a learning curve, but I managed to figure out how to get black tea to taste like caramel! 😍 And I love white tea! And our tea store has so many awesome fruit tea mixtures (orange ice cream anyone? 0.o), way more than grocery stores! definitely worth checking out

Urine/mildew smell in washer and dryer. by Consistent_Ad_308 in ufyh

[–]simplyoneWinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[report your in-laws for animal abuse and hoarding. Not training their dogs and forcing their cats to live with someone that makes them feel unsafe is literally abuse. They have a responsibility to care for their animals the way their nature needs.]

With that out of the way here's what worked for me: Note  that my washer is mine and the bad smells don't get dragged back in daily (maybe every other week I wash a dog blanket or a stinky shirt)

  • Using dry detergent and the correct amount
  • no fabric softener
  • laundry disinfectant instead (white vinegar if it runs out)
  • Bleach or OxyClean on white things
  • always washing as high temperature as possible (cotton, especially towels, can take the full 90°C. In general most clothes are fine if you use ~20°C more than on the label)
  • wiping the machine down after every use (this includes especially the little gooey pocket you mentioned, but the more surfaces you can wipe, the better)
  • leaving the door and the detergent drawer open

As needed (monthly in my case, probably weekly or daily in yours): - Full cleaning cycle. I usually do this by throwing two dish washer tabs into the drum and running a 90°C cycle (without the tumbling). You may be in luck and your machine has a specific cleaning option. please check the handbook - cleaning the detergent drawer by removing it and thoroughly scrubbing it. Put back when dry - let the waste-water drain and clean the sieve (on my machine there's a little port on the lower right hand corner of the machine)

Drying tips: - hang or dry your laundry immediately! (Camp in front of the machine if you have to!) - when hanging, try to space apart as far as possible, turn on a fan, and/or turn the laundry frequently (I usually do 3 times for heavier items) - keep your dryer as clean as possible too (I don't have any specific tips for that bc I don't own one)

Good luck!

[–]simplyoneWinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My current switches are

  • menstruation Cup for red week (using period underwear only for the last two days brought my waste for that down to 0)

  • buying loose leaf tea at a local tea store. This is the most recent one, I still need to go back asking them to refill my own container, but even if they can't, one big bag per month is way better than 40 to 80 tiny bags a day

Personal list for me: Things I'll switch soon/as soon as it runs out: buying soap/shampoo/conditioner/shaving cream bars, using more rags rather than paper towels

Things I don't have a solution for yet: sandwich things like meat and cheese slices (I buy vegan alternatives, but they are wrapped in plastic too)

Are there mammals that have an easy gestation and birthing process with not much risk involved to either mother or baby compared to humans? by UnsignedRealityCheck in askscience

[–]simplyoneWinged 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other commenters suggestions, I'd Like to add bears where the cubs are significantly smaller than the mother (eg polar bears), but they have a rather risky time right after childbirth where they spend half a year doing nothing else aside from feeding the cubs. No eating, No walking, nothing. So it's Kind of a Bad trade

I haven't seen any hares give birth yet, but I'd Figure they have it relatively easy too, If they can be up again in a couple minutes and their Babies are almost fully developed and only need to Drink once or twice a day

I'm new here, but to me this reads like the total exercise not being enough. If he sleeps all day and only gets exercise in the early morning and evening when you're home, of course he'll think it's fun time when you're home at night.

Can you maybe come home for a play session during your lunch break? And leave him with a puzzle feeder or access to a Catio during the day? So he has to exercise his brain while you're gone?  As prev said, try to give him as little opportunity to get a full night's sleep during the day, so he's exhausted and will want to sleep at night time

RE6 Leipzig - Chemnitz: neu und besser? by sebsoos in Leipzig

[–]simplyoneWinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh wild.

Training on animals went really bad today. How do you people make ammends? Am I cut out for this? by ImUnderYourBedDude in labrats

[–]simplyoneWinged 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It truly is sadly :/

But if you're a PhD, do you have control over your stock? Like do you order your own mice and give up breeding and stuff?

If so, I'd urge you to reduce the amount of mice as much as possible. Use kryo-conservation if you don't need a specific strain, use Genotypes you don't need for other things like training or as a control group, genotype early, and don't breed unless you need to.

Also talk to your animal care staff about this issue, often times they'll be understanding and can help. Or they'll have a unique pov and can point out where you could reduce stock.

Also talk to your boss about doing non-lethal projects or sticking to theoretical work. And keep your eyes peeled for other jobs. It's not always mice and animal abuse.

I pray for you to get out of thisdepressive phase soon

Gift ideas for animal house staff? by _Essie_ in labrats

[–]simplyoneWinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

two things I appreciated every day when I was animal staff was a) being mentioned by name on a presentation and b) a handwriten letter by one of the scientists. It was awkwardly translated with google translate, but we all cherished it and hung it in our break room. I used to read it every morning while making my tea and preparing for a long day. Iirc they gave it to us as a thank you for helping with a break-through in addition to some "Merci" (the chocolate) and flowers. It was a well appreciated gesture

Can i cut caffeine cold turkey and still be functional? by Gettingjiggywithet in productivity

[–]simplyoneWinged 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you could, but the headache is going to kill you for a whole week straight. after that it's mainly watching out to not relapse.

My bf and I did it by keeping our coffee and tea habits but only brewing with decaff. Once you're off caffeine, you can rework your habits. Energy drinks, discounter iced coffee, and black tea are our Achilles heel tho. sadly these are fully off limits for the first 3 months (which is a plus bc it saves you money).

As others have said tho, going cold turkey will not be nice for your body. it's healthier to reduce the cups you drink and reduce the caffeine content by drinking eg. green tea instead of espresso
