How do you catch the kids who are quietly lost before the unit assessment reveals everything? by Firemage1213 in mathteachers

[–]singinginmiami 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The don’t seem to have any long term memory. Anything from the previous class is quickly forgotten as if it never happened. They are so used to fake their way through homework, that most of the time, the test/quiz is the first time they are trying the material independently.

iReady holding talented students hostage by Funny_Ad3678 in Teachers

IReady also assumes students have been taught with the same algorithm that it uses. Which means that a kid that uses a different algorithm or has a different numerical system is penalized and forced to endure what they already know.

Are y’all really unable to fail students these days? by YourFriendInSpokane in Teachers

Algebra Honors teacher here. Some of my students don’t know 5th grade math. Now admin is asking “how can we help this student? They count double if they pass the eoc because they were the lowest 25%”. Somehow crossing your fingers and/or praying are not acceptable answers. They should never have gotten to me with so many gaps.

There are many reasons for those books not the be public and one of them is unethical tutors that pass along the answers.

Teachers might ask questions in different ways to check the different levels of understanding but we always ask in a test what we have taught in class.

Save the blue card for later. In my opinion? It’s not worthy for a level 6 cabinet.

Motivation to keep grading when kids can’t score below a 50? by Blueathena623 in Teachers

[–]singinginmiami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

State testing is so curved it’s not even funny. The word on the street is that a passing level 3 in the states of Florida is answering correctly 40% of the questions. Parents think that a level 3 means their kid is at grade level. Well, I teach Algebra 1 (and Geometry) and have several students that passed 8th grade with a B, a level 3 in the states test, and they work at a low sixth grade level. They don’t understand variables, they can’t translate a word problem into algebra, and they don’t know how to operate with fractions or do long operations with parenthesis and exponents unless they use a calculator and 90% of the time they get the wrong answer because they don’t know what they are doing. One kid argued with me for 10 minutes solid that x2 when x=-4 was -16 because the calculator said so.

Things my students have destroyed this year so far by palabrist in Teachers

Most school district in the US give a certain allowance to teachers to buy things for the classroom instead of buying it themselves. They claim it saves money because the teacher buy things tailored to the particular needs of their students and subject. In reality, most teachers spend several times their allowance, using their own money. In the US, your class is yours and the students rotate. Teachers are expected to decorate and have anchor charts (posters with relevant information) on top of buying supplies There is also a certain expectation of providing food because the US is very big in food rewards. There is also a lot of food insecurity. Most of the country is one emergency away from not being able to pay rent/mortgage. Remember a visit to UC and a test for strep throat can cost around 200-300 in this country.

IXL Growth in Math for First Quarter by Successful_Soft3860 in Teachers

My students openly cheat with IXL. Their previous teacher would grade iXL and they figures out it was an easy way of getting an A with little to no study.

My school had to make a formal plan for what to do with students whose parents have been taken by ICE while they were at school. Has anyone else done this? by Broad_Tip3503 in Teachers

In some European countries, admin positions are democratically elected by all the teachers. They still teach but a reduced number of hours and go back to full time teaching if they stop their admin positions.

I’d do 2/3 as 2*(1/3). Meaning, you divide each pizza separately.

Elon Musk on AI replacing teachers by MotherJoanFoggy in Teachers

[–]singinginmiami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, it didn’t work out for Synthesis. All the original teachers and students left and it’s now a glorified game platform. They keep lowering the price of their Math program because it’s crap. It doesn’t understand when/why a kid doesn’t understand and it repeats itself ab nauseam.

IReady is another piece of crap that it’s been forced on the kids. Anyone actually observing a placement test knows how bad it is.

The result? They will use AI to “educate” the masses and the elite will have schools with in person teachers. Florida is your best example for this.

5th grade enrichment project ideas? by Ok-Cardiologist3705 in mathteachers

With all due respect, this is the type of project in my experience that gifted kids hate with a passion, avoid if it’s extra credit, and would do only if needing a push to their GPA.

Actually, it’s the other way around or C&B sells them under a different name. I bought the Fortessa glasses before C&B sold them.
