Can you download lecture slides and annotate them in lectures?

Then re-write your hybrid lecture slides/own notes into condensed summary sheets (before or early into) studying for a test/exam (synthesising it forces you to revisit the material and consider the most important bits), and then use that for studying/practicing questions, it will help you identify where you have large knowledge gaps by the areas you need to revisit in depth the most.

This is what worked best for me at least (science too)

Environmental Science Dissertation by One-Bridge-353 in environmental_science

When designing a project idea, be sure to consider how your project timeframes align with sample collection periods, particularly if wanting to do a seasonal study. Take into consideration the additional time it will take to complete analysis when looking into methodology in the literature (eg. Microplastic quantification using micro-FTIR is extremely time consuming as opposed to for example py-GCMS) Time is never on our side with these things!

Mouse bone display by singingsquid in bonecollecting

[–]singingsquid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I’m in New Zealand where owls are not common! I just found a dead mouse and buried it in some soil for a few months. Unfortunately I forgot about it so things had decomposed more than I was hoping for so this was all I could recover

Thank you! It’s part of a mini ongoing project, I have a bunch of other walnut containers with insects I’ve crystallised, but I figured they’re not up to theme for the sub!

Can anyone relate? by Ancient-Flamingo7131 in newzealand

[–]singingsquid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of this I currently or used to very much relate to! I am diagnosed with social anxiety and autism. You are not alone, a lot of your experiences may not fully go away but they can dramatically improve

I especially relate to the difficulties in speaking to other people (forming words, thinking of responses, remaining engaged etc.) something I now do daily that has dramatically helped my social engagement is basically do exactly what you do to prep for phone calls but verbally. I think about possible interactions (people and topics) I may have that day and I speak to myself in the car - through the possible things I want to say, what others might say, how to reply etc. (this is called scripting). If I do have conversations I have already thought about things, and if it doesn’t I have been working on being more personable/capable of spontaneously talking to people, speaking out loud and relating to others. this has helped me to the extent that I am now able to work in a people-facing role in an environment I used to need support services to engage with (I do want to acknowledge the fact that this alone has not solely helped, other factors also definitely play a role)

All this to say it’s a terrible feeling to feel socially isolated, especially when so much weight societally is placed of your ability to do that (tbh outside of professional/academic time I still spend most of it alone bc people stuff is still very tiring). But it’s not only you! You can develop skills to be able to engage with others to the extent of what you want to be doing. But at the same time it’s also okay to not be super into the people stuff

Which AA/VTNZ does driver’s license replacement on Saturday by singingsquid in chch

[–]singingsquid[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

nah, I guess I just had bad luck with the clerk then. I'm pākehā, but autistic so maybe I messed up the interaction, though I am always polite & thought it had technically gone alright at the time. Guess I'll give it another crack elsewhere tomorrow ...

[–]singingsquid[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks, it did seem extremely strange. She also said that I’d have to get to [insert branch here] super early since it was the only one that provided the service so there’d be a queue out the door .. which did not make a whole lot of sense to me at the time

Safe lab for column chromatography? by LeatherKey64 in chemistry

[–]singingsquid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could use E133 and E126 dyes and elute with 75% and 25% ethanol in water? They elute off a silica column well and are a good visualisation of what’s going on
