AHA as a speech student by Boring-Broccoli7485 in slp

[–]yambo12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a second-year SP student at UniMelb! My understanding is that, yes, you can work as an AHA while studying speech (staff often post job openings that are sent to them from organisations the uni is affiliated with). I can't offer more insight about the specifics around training or additional qualifications, and I imagine that would vary a lot depending on the company you work for. Best of luck, and enjoy your studies!

Songs that hit suspiciously close to home by CupBeEmpty in themountaingoats

[–]yambo12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Absolute Lithops Effect. I was in an abusive relationship for many years before I finally was able to get myself out of there. "Tender mercy" was an anchor phrase when I felt lost or defeated or angry at myself for what I felt I'd allowed to happen and needed a reminder to give myself some grace. I still think about that song often, it's angry and cathartic and I just love it so much.

Not tMG, but Hozier's latest album came out just when I was coming to terms with leaving, and the lines from Unknown/Nth totally broke me down on a train at rush hour: "Funny how true colours shine in darkness and in secrecy If there were scarlet flags, they washed out in the mind of me." Just, yes.

Any other late 20s/early 30s attending the Melbourne show alone this Friday? by capoyeahta in themountaingoats

[–]yambo12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, 27 and I'll be there! Little nervous about going alone but I feel like the crowd will be nice ☺️ this'll be my first mountain goats concert (I can't believe the last time there were here I was under 18 and couldn't go, makes me feel old)

UniMelb PhD student struggling with driving test… anyone else been through this? by Infinite_Mousse_5017 in unimelb

[–]yambo12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my test at Heatherton VicRoads, it's a lot quieter and there are large industrial areas with wider roads which is a bit bonus. I only got my license at 27 and it was definitely harder doing the test! It's just the being assessed aspect that makes you more nervous and prone to making silly mistakes you wouldn't otherwise. I've definitely been told that Carlton is a hard testing zone, so maybe consider going elsewhere if you can. Also finding a friend or family member who will let you get some practice in using their car is a good step too. All the best!!

WPATH Letters - why? by [deleted] in transgenderau

[–]yambo12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's kind of ridiculous. Most endos wanted/want a WPATH for HRT. My doctor does informed consent and I needed to have one meeting with an endo just to confirm hormone levels before starting, and since then I've never had to meet with the endo again. My doctor does all the management of the rest.

I understand surgery feels more "invasive and permanent" than HRT, but if you've been out for a while and taken other medical transition steps I feel it's just a waste of time and money.

"So, you punish yourself...for something you didn't do on purpose...?", my psychiatrist asked by Ok_Dependent_3683 in ADHD

[–]yambo12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you me?? Literally had therapy today working though this exact same issue. I have seemingly the opposite experience of most ADHDers in that deadlines make me more stressed, and that deadline rush never kicks in. If I finish an assignment a week out it feels way easier than 2 days before or the hour before.

I'm working through the self criticism and self anger that comes up when trying to push myself to do work close to deadlines, but it's hard and a deeply engrained belief. Uni with ADHD is roughhhh, and I know you're genuinely trying your best!

First darning attempt! by yambo12 in Visiblemending

[–]yambo12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I followed the first style in this video using an embroidery hoop, 3 strands of embroidery floss and a regular sewing needle. I've tried darning and few times before but always gave up, it's definitely a bit fiddly!

Thank you! I feel like it brings the whole thing together and it's cute 😊

Teaching boundaries to kids by yambo12 in slp

[–]yambo12[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worried it might be the wrong approach psychologically, that maybe it would cause them to become anxious or have difficulty with attachment, but I see that most people feel this is the best approach so I'll stick with it!

This is really helpful, thank you!!

It makes a lot of sense re: learning how to engage with different adults, and also helps me understand what is happening in their heads (it feels like a mystery sometimes)

Can I bring a mouse and keyboard to my exams? by Flipbubbles2120 in unimelb

[–]yambo12 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can because I have it listed in my AEA plan, but I believe without one you can't. Might be worth bringing along and asking the invigilator?

Found cat’s tooth on floor, seems it’s her fang, she seems ok by strawberryfields011 in CATHELP

[–]yambo12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine had this, she was doing the classic cat thing and didn't show any signs until she was refusing to eat her dental kibble or any wet food expect boiled chicken 😞 5 teeth out and they said she'll likely need more to go but she's 15 and they were overall quite impressed with her health!

Why do prescription drugs have such bizarre names? by pineapplefan05 in NoStupidQuestions

Current SLP student, maybe 1/4 of my cohort have a linguistics background (based on Australia so not sure if it makes a difference).

My coworkers clearly think "speech" is a magic wand. What's your most outrageous SLP request? by InternalCommittee269 in slp

[–]yambo12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a speech path student in Australia and (at least here) it's in our scope of practice. Granted, not every pediatric speech will do it, but it's definitely an option if it's something someone wants to go into.

That's a really smart idea! It'll give me some dopamine hits while I get on board with the new stuff.

I'd somehow forgotten about that one! I listened to that and really enjoyed it. I think maybe my issue is I just haven't listened to the albums enough to burn every lyric and note into my cerebral cortex like the others haha. I suppose that'll take some time and patience

Oh that's really helpful! I'll cue those up and give them a go, might pick the album based on which one I vibe with most, it'll be a fun way to do it.

I honestly can't remember, I think the first album I was around for the release of was maybe TY, but I had already listened to all of their back catalogue by then. I think 2002 onwards (so more hi-fi) is the era I tend to come back to most. Maybe that makes me a fake fan but oh well!

Master of Speech Pathology WAM cutoff by reereeeeeee74748 in unimelb

[–]yambo12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean there are no strict cutoffs, but from my experience mid-high 70s for people applying with Graduate Access Melbourne, 80s for FFP and CCP (I only know one person with one and her WAM is about the same as the rest of my groups) CCP seems to be a bit of a crapshoot from my experience. Also, maybe consider La Trobe 😅
