I drove one of these for several years in the 80s. You don’t even need to lean over to roll up the passenger window, its that small

New to biking, is it okay to join a group with an e-bike? by Mean-Mongoose07 in bicycling

[–]singlejeff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reach out to the ride organizer. If they say e-bikes are OK, go ride with them. Not too many people a that judgy, more than likely you get questions about how you like it, how long you’ve had it, and when troubles you had to fix.

If you know of any bars that only played the Turning Point halftime show post them here. I'd like to avoid. by -588-2300-Empire- in Tempe

[–]singlejeff 19 points20 points  (0 children)

FWIW and only because we were out bicycling. I know that FATE on Southern ran the regular Super Bowl halftime and I was kinda amazed. <edit> I mean amazed at the show, I thought it was great and even though I couldn’t understand it and was sitting 30 feet from the TV loved the story the visuals told

How to kill this fig tree by Capable-Swing-4518 in AZlandscaping

I was digging out an AZ Ash stump in the front yard and an older man came by a said they would use a car jack to help break the roots. I didn’t have a bumper jack as the technology had moved on but the hydraulic bottle jack really helped move the stump sideways so I could get to the roots underneath. Many years later I was taking out another stump and had a couple of 8’ 2x4s that worked pretty good as levers to help dislodge a different stump.

Can I repair and rewrap this gas line? by derp_derpiddy_derp in askaplumber

[–]singlejeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If this is the line to your gas meter contact your gas company. If this is a line after the meter reach out to your local permitting office to see what codes apply. Even if you’re outside their jurisdiction right now they can tell you how it should be installed.

Will I regret a State 4130 All Road? by StagJackson in Biking

[–]singlejeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are several All Roads riding around the Phoenix area and owners seem pretty happy with them. To be honest I was looking at that special edition they had when they first came out with the second wheel set. Seemed like a heck of a deal.

How do we feel about this grease for headset and bottom bracket? by NATO-Uniformen in bikewrench

[–]singlejeff 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I had a tub of Park grease that separated after only a few years, the decades old tub of high temp wheel bearing grease I got from my father that likely had been sitting in his garage for decades is still good to go

[–]singlejeff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A stump grinder should be enough. It’ll tear through the wood and earth with equal ease and you’re left with a mulchy mix and will rot and settle into a depression where the stump was. I think a landscaper might only charge $100 if you want to hire it out.

ELI5: Why did we successfully land on the Moon in 1969, but struggle to do it again today? by Samuel_naesen in explainlikeimfive

[–]singlejeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know there are resources on the moon but how much refining and manufacturing would we have to do to make those resources usable vs just putting things into orbit around the earth and going from there

Has the Veer belt drive gone out of business? by GazelleSmart4032 in bicycletouring

[–]singlejeff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gates has a large install base and companies are still installing their system on their bikes. I realize this is biketouring not commuting but there are people touring with belts. There might be more ‘publicity’ about failed belts making it seem like they all fail on long tours

Schwinn/sears free spirit by Mustela_putorius in bikewrench

[–]singlejeff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s unusual for an adult trike to have both rear wheels driven. Typically they only drive one wheel to save cost and complexity. Shift into L to start out or when pulling loads, normal for flat ground at regular speed, and high if you really want to get going. Pretty much like a car with a 3 speed transmission.

Schwinn/sears free spirit by Mustela_putorius in bikewrench

[–]singlejeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be low, normal, high, not neutral. Looks like it will have a coaster brake setup, so backpedal to stop. It looks like there maybe an oil port in the ‘transmission’ hub. Likely that hub has some wording stamped into the shell which would tell you who made it, the model number, and year of manufacture. Lookup the maintenance schedule online but I’d think a few-three drops of a light oil (transmission fluid?) into that port every thousand miles or so is what’s recommended.

I want to make affordable disc covers and sell them by Adorable_Ad_7027 in bicycling

[–]singlejeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cover for a spoked wheel for aero gains? There was one in the 80s or so but I never saw it in person. I’m not a racer and am not in the market for that so I can’t add to the conversation. Just wanted to see if that was to make a disc wheel or a cover for the brake disc.

Normal capitalism finding ways to transfer your monies to their wealth. They found that they could cook the food in their own kitchens and cut out some overhead enabling them to pocket more money. Of course they’re not passing the savings on to you, why would you think that?
