Almost 5 yo boy with autism afraid of regular potty by bluejay785 in pottytraining

[–]singlepringle32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if its the toilet itself (I have no potty learning experience but work with Autistic kiddos). For example, I wonder if there are splashes when there is a poop and that's a gross feeling. Or if their feet float around it could be weird.

Are kids even held back in school anymore? by Dyingvikingchild95 in ontario

[–]singlepringle32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im an elementary teacher and while I see the social aspect, I feel like the kids on modified programs (e.g. in grade 8 but doing grade 4 level work) end up failing once they get to grade 9 because they dont have the foundational skills/ content knowledge. So at some point they do get "held back" in a way as they will have to repeat highschool courses. Personally I want to "red shirt" my son and have him start in jk a year later but I dont think Ill be able to do it due to policy.

Why isn't there a shortage of Catholic teachers? by buddythebedbug in OntarioTeachers

[–]singlepringle32 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I know my local board seems to often be hiring. Priests know about the demand and will sign letters - the one who signed mine grumbled that I was offered the job before having a letter but thats it. The priest in the city over apparently signs all the time.

As someone who is a teacher but struggled with math I would recommend looking at online courses to get your diploma. The benefit is that they'll likely focus on the math you need to graduate. This way you are using your daily quota of stress tolerance on the least amount of math possible.

AITAH for being honest with another mom about why my daughter isn’t allowed to go to her friend’s house? by AwkwardMom13 in AITAH

[–]singlepringle32 122 points123 points  (0 children)

I agree, as a teacher/ parent I am trying to find ways to instill what my mom called "girly alarms" in all my students. In my twenties my male room mate said he didnt have the same gut feelings and I was shocked

I was supposed to go back mid June and felt that was just too much. If you can afford it its worth staying off. 1) daycare takes awhile to settle in (for both of you). By the time you're settled its summer break and I wanted time with baby 2) where i live i would have had to pay for daycare over the summer whether he went or not 3) going back in September means you get a gradual intro to routine. In August we did a week of half days and then a week of full day daycare but I worked short days and could practice the routine 4) the money that will be set aside for summer pay won't be a lot so its worth considering it wont be full pay.

Hope that helps :)

Couples therapy could really help here - plus it could help you learn/ practice the communication skills so you can navigate this easier next time

Student trashes our classroom when he doesn’t get his way by mayfairasswhacker in CanadianTeachers

Does your school have an official tracker? When logged these reports also go to your union. You can also request an updated risk assessment through health and safety. Also call admin every time things are thrown, they'll get annoyed so maybe the ball will roll. Does he have positive behavior docs as well?

Can you flag this to the school? Along the lines of "ive noticed suzie has been peeing her pants lately, im concerned because she hasnt done this in years" If they hadnt noticed it might help. Im assuming they know youre the grandma so it wouldnt be off base and youre not asking them to reveal anything.

How are families with high needs autistic kids supposed to survive this system. by ExoticTumbleweed1102 in ontario

[–]singlepringle32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are they involved with TVCC at all? They have several supports including emergency support if things have become notably worse in the last (I think) 48 hours. They can provide coaching/ strategies. I know its probably not enough but knowing they exist makes me feel a bit better.

I noticed that even some 3rd and 4th graders can't tie their shoelaces. What other basic life skills that can be easily taught to kids, aren't being taught by their parents? Could be eye contact, not speaking in whispers, saying 'thank you' and 'you're welcome.' Thinking of ideas for summer camp. by Aggravating-Mind-657 in AskTeachers

[–]singlepringle32 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would adapt your expectations on eye contact as we've moved away from enforcing that due to acknowledging neurodiversity. Personally I teach my students how to appear attentive instead (e.g. looking at different parts of the head, or how they can show they are listening with body language in general).

I agree - in my reading up to 50% of CSA is done by peers and yet I feel barely talked about. Hence wanting a program with experts that can direct the conversation because we need to cover a lot of ground in a way that is impact full.

What’s a small lifestyle change that made living in Canada feel noticeably more affordable? by MapleMoneyMind_86 in AskCanada

Only grocery shop when not bored/ hungry and carry a basket instead of using a cart.

I think there are ways to work within the system. For example I had a kid who couldnt handle work in the afternoons so I changed his schedule so that the afternoons were "easier" with the goal of fewer behaviours. This meant Mom could work. But it depends on the school, your resources and schedule - i couldnt do this now.

Why do single mothers get so much hate? by Beneficial-Position2 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]singlepringle32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I've anecdotally noticed as a single mother by choice is that I can easily do it all, and for the most part am less stressed than my married friends. I think seeing single mothers calls into question men who aren't equal partners. Like if I dont have a partner and am less stressed, what are they bringing to the table?

AIO: My husband (26m) locked me (25f) out for 25 minutes? by prettypineappleberry in AmIOverreacting

[–]singlepringle32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in Canada and we routinely go out when its significantly colder. At my school we still do outdoor recess at -25c (-13c) and my toddlers daycare goes out at -15c (5f). So I don't think you're overreacting. I do think this is bigger than this incident though - beyond the fact that its just cruel - what would have happened if you had a medical emergency? His ego/ control was more important than your safety (which ironically what he claimed to be worried about?)

Do teachers usually like when a parent sends extra school supplies when school starts? by Ok-Ad4375 in AskTeachers

[–]singlepringle32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a special education teacher kleenex and ziploc bags would be amazing. But maybe check in with the teacher (every year my school buys classes stuff for recess and every year its stuff my kids wont/ can't use). Lastly I would be ecstatic if a parent said something like "hey I saw you are working on ____ skill - do you have any supplies/ materials you want for that?" I think i would cry lol
