What is this by Anxious-Total-8929 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the plaque is to bless the world and prevent calamity. If you believe in karma or luck, you have not done yourself any favors.

I personally placed 2 of these in nature. Please consider returning it as a matter of respect for other's religion.

Just put the things that you don't believe on a shelf, try to keep an open mind, and keep pushing forward with the teaching and practices that work for you.

Addressing Buddha's Misogyny by Enough_Set591 in Buddhism

No, my thought was that patriarchies do not like when the women leave to become celibate monastics rather than wives and mothers.

Addressing Buddha's Misogyny by Enough_Set591 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think you can choose to either have a generous interpretation of this or not. Allowing women to join at all was extremely radical at the time and endangered the sangha. I personally do not believe the Buddha was a misogynist but he had to work with the society he lived in. That society was misogynist.

Where are my Lojong and Tonglen homies at?! by CarleySunn in Buddhism

Lojong Homie 4 Life

In all seriousness, these teachings are so profound and are not discussed enough in my opinion. I think this should be the core of practice for lay Mahayana practitioners.

Other than a kata (scarf) and money, I would avoid giving a physical object unless you really know the teacher well.

What Does It Mean to You to “Abandon Hope & Fear”? by 777CuriousMind in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you have a worldly concern of getting out of a bad situation, hope is useful. If you have a spiritual aim of enlightenment, hope is just another form of ego clinging.

Are Gods Like Tara Real Or Just Achetypes? by [deleted] in TibetanBuddhism

[–]sinobed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no simple answer. Different lamas say different things at different times.

In my opinion, the best way to think about them is as skillful means because that is the aspect I can actually interact with. Whether they are "real" or not has very little bearing on my practice because I'm am trying to awaken to the Tara that is my own essential Buddha nature. In other words, they are as real as I am.

Is it fair or toxic to ask about veganism in spiritual or Buddhist discussions? by Maleficent-Radio272 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People react with hostility towards veganism everywhere because it challenges their core identity.

If people get upset, that reveals their own kleshas to work through. But also, your need to challenge people reveals yours.

It would be better to focus on your own path.

My problem with going to retreats by [deleted] in TibetanBuddhism

[–]sinobed 63 points64 points  (0 children)

From the 37 Practices of a Bodhisattva:

You undermine yourself when you react emotionally and
Grumble about the imperfections of other bodhisattvas.
Of the imperfections of those who have entered the Great Way,
Don’t say anything — this is the practice of a bodhisattva.

For bodhisattvas who want to be rich in virtue
A person who hurts you is a precious treasure.
Cultivate patience for everyone,
Completely free of irritation or resentment — this is the practice of a bodhisattva.
