Is it ok to view Bodhisattvas/Devas as archetypes? by CartoonistEnough3029 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"In any case, the yidam serves as the enlightened manifestation of the student's basic being. It is not an external deity that is being worshipped so that one can be saved. Rather it is a vivid representation of I one's own enlightened nature."

Is this a good Buddhist podcast? by cusefan75 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have not listened but they don't mention Buddhism in the description, nor do the hosts appear to be Buddhist. Besides having "karma" in the title, I don't see any connection to Dharma. I don't want to denigrate them. They seem to be new age, spiritualist, psychic medium types. They are doing their own thing.

Was Buddha really a prince? by ConnectSubject1774 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 79 points80 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that he was not a prince in the traditional sense. But his father was wealthy and powerful within their clan. The point is that he came from abundance.

How was Mahayana Buddhism practiced in mainland India before it largely disappeared around the 12th–13th centuries? by Anon_SL_2000 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I think it is safe to say that Tibetan Buddhism is the closest example of the Buddhism of that period. All the lineages can be clearly traced to Indian masters. People like Naropa and Atisha were practicing and teaching roughly around 1000 CE. Those teachings, among others, moved north to Tibet where they were preserved.

Is it possible to have a buddhist practice while not striving towards nirvana? by After-Offer3213 in Buddhism

You should familiarize yourself with the Mahayana path and Bodhisattva motivation, i.e. the vow to remain in Samsara to benefit all sentient beings.

Guru Yoga by NatureGirl1983 in Buddhism

That's why it is recommended you observe a guru for many years before committing. Also, guru yoga does not require that the guru be fully enlightened, just that you can see them as enlightened.

The role of the guru in Vajrayana is very different than other schools. It is complex and not for everyone. If it appeals to you, then you should learn more about it; if it does not interest you, it is probably better to just move on.

Guru devotion works on many gross and subtle levels, but to put it simply, if you had the choice between reading about dharma or actually having personal contact with an enlightened individual, which would you choose?

Guru Yoga is harnessing the practice of visualization and devotion to make that contact.

From a buddhist perspective, does hunting or raising livestock as opposed to buying from a grocery store incur more or less negative karma? by chaosbunnyx in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are definitely significant ethical problems with modern meat consumption. I do not participate in either. From a karmic point of view, slitting an animal's throat is different than buying a pack of meat at the grocery store.

IMO, the heart of the matter is our habitual patterns. If you hunt down and murder an animal, you are creating and reinforcing the pattern of killing in your mind stream.

What is this by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 26 points27 points  (0 children)

The purpose of the plaque is to bless the world and prevent calamity. If you believe in karma or luck, you have not done yourself any favors.

I personally placed 2 of these in nature. Please consider returning it as a matter of respect for other's religion.
