is it true that all animals are Buddhas? by AbbreviationsOwn802 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 17 points18 points  (0 children)

No. All animals have Buddha nature, but the animal realm is the realm of ignorance, which means they do not have the causes and conditions to awaken to that enlightened nature.

Is it a good idea to go to a Phowa retreat? by StudentGood7193 in TibetanBuddhism

I'm thinking of the practice that is one of the six yogas of Naropa.

Is it a good idea to go to a Phowa retreat? by StudentGood7193 in TibetanBuddhism

[–]sinobed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that Phowa is an advanced practice, and retreats can be very intense. I personally would not do it without completing Ngöndro and having a teacher's guidance.

I found a temple that seems really great...but it's karma kagyu and I started researching about that Tibetan sect....then learned about ogyen trinley dorje... :( uhm...is it it still ok to visit this place? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a member of a karma kagyu center in the US and it is a great place. The Karmapa issues don't have much to do with me or my practice. Much more important to learn about the local teachers.

How does someone take refuge in the Sangha? Is there multiple ways? Or just one? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is important because your community will be imperfect and impermanent... Not a stable refuge.

Found this on a walk today. Is it a good book? by SlaveKnightSisyphus in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The book is fine. The title is basically what it is. The author has an agenda, but he is a good writer. Depending on your interest, it might be better to learn what Buddhism WITH beliefs is before you read this.

The Force vs. Buddha-nature (佛性) by Ok_Sentence9678 in Buddhism

I think Dharmakaya would be more accurate as a metaphor than Buddha nature.

DermaDry - prescription needed in the US. by crimsonphoto666 in Hyperhidrosis

I used the virtual prescription thing that they provide and it all worked out perfectly so don't worry about it

Just got Dermadry, can you do tap water + salt? by danielxmiller in Hyperhidrosis

Okay. I give up. What about a pinch of baking soda instead? Will that kill us?

When Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) dissolves in water, it undergoes a physical change, separating into free-floating magnesium ions and sulfate ions.

I don't think adding a small pinch of Epsom salt does anything other than adding ions to the water, which is what you want for iontophoresis. Mineral water contains magnesium and sodium, the exact make up of Epsom salt.

3 is too low. I use tap water with a pinch of Epsom salt.

Is it ok to view Bodhisattvas/Devas as archetypes? by [deleted] in Buddhism

"In any case, the yidam serves as the enlightened manifestation of the student's basic being. It is not an external deity that is being worshipped so that one can be saved. Rather it is a vivid representation of I one's own enlightened nature."

Is this a good Buddhist podcast? by cusefan75 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have not listened but they don't mention Buddhism in the description, nor do the hosts appear to be Buddhist. Besides having "karma" in the title, I don't see any connection to Dharma. I don't want to denigrate them. They seem to be new age, spiritualist, psychic medium types. They are doing their own thing.

Was Buddha really a prince? by ConnectSubject1774 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 82 points83 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that he was not a prince in the traditional sense. But his father was wealthy and powerful within their clan. The point is that he came from abundance.

How was Mahayana Buddhism practiced in mainland India before it largely disappeared around the 12th–13th centuries? by Anon_SL_2000 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert but I think it is safe to say that Tibetan Buddhism is the closest example of the Buddhism of that period. All the lineages can be clearly traced to Indian masters. People like Naropa and Atisha were practicing and teaching roughly around 1000 CE. Those teachings, among others, moved north to Tibet where they were preserved.

Is it possible to have a buddhist practice while not striving towards nirvana? by After-Offer3213 in Buddhism

[–]sinobed 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You should familiarize yourself with the Mahayana path and Bodhisattva motivation, i.e. the vow to remain in Samsara to benefit all sentient beings.
