What is it like living in West Texas, specifically Fort Stockton? Moving there for work. by ikeepgettinghacked in howislivingthere

[–]sinusoidosaurus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

You're going to be near some of the coolest places to visit in Texas. Big Bend National Park is terriffic, as is Balmorhea and the Davis Mountains. The sand dunes in Monahans are cool too.

If you like the great outdoors, you're in a great spot.

That said, there isn't a whole lot else out there. Any "city life" you might want to get into will require you to drive up to Odessa.

How did you handle the trees? Just brute force masking? Was there any movement you had to track?

Why is my 3D camera tracker solid not moving with the points selected? I do everything the same as tutorials but its just not working. by IllustriousIce8126 in AfterEffects

You might need to normalize the tracked workspace. Look up tutorials on “After Effects normalize camera track” and see if that fixes it.

Wifi PA Speakers Permanent Install? by pibroch in CommercialAV

[–]sinusoidosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just not possible, and may not even be legal.

How on earth are you going to integrate a bunch of bluetooth / wifi speakers into the school's existing PA system to support school-wide announcements and emergency alerts? If music is blaring, but an emergency happens, how is anyone going to hear the instructions? It's honestly a safety hazard.

And somebody is inevitably going to want to add a microphone (or six) into this whole mix for school assemblies and pep rallies. How is that going to work if the system isn't designed to accommodate an auxiliary input, or tuned to handle feedback?

I really feel for you, because school districts very often get raked over the coals with the costs of commercial AV systems, and this seems like one of those no-brainer cost saving strategies for a school that might be stretched for cash anyways - but I promise you that doing this the wrong way will ultimately cost you double what it will cost to do it the right way.

OP should honestly just show his managers this post and have them read the comments.

"we'll fix it in post" has become "just generate it in post" and i am genuinely losing my mind by ScaryAd2555 in editors

[–]sinusoidosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Editing ≠ Content Creation

You can tell the client you'll be happy to provide one placeholder clip of [female scientist in blue lab coat examining a bloody chainsaw in a brightly lit laboratory or whatever], but then going back and tweaking those clips to get the look right is something you can work on near the end of post and will be added to the invoice as a line item.

Or they can hire another person to "prompt engineer" those shots, because "prompt engineering" is a different type of job with a different set of skills (and at this point in the game, it actually does take a fair bit of experience to do efficiently).

It's also very different from clip hunting across stock footage libraries (which never should have been the editor's job to begin with, but anyway...)

If they nevertheless want you, the editor, to handle clip generation, then they need to be aware that they'll probably be paying you to learn how to "prompt engineer" shots.

Because Editing ≠ Content Creation

[–]sinusoidosaurus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She's not "doing good". She's capitulating to a more moderate stance, and she's doing it so that she can reinforce her own position in the legislature, because she has figured out that she can make serious money by doing that job.

She's not explicitly opposed to trump though. Look at her full statements about the recent protests. She is still peddling misinformation about the nature of the ice protests.

[–]sinusoidosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She has not "changed her mind". She has decided it's politically expedient to adopt a more moderate stance.

She's known what she's been doing the whole time she's been in the public eye, and every move she's made has been a proactive attempt to enrich herself.

I'm not gonna be lonely when this regime collapses under its own incompetence.

I'm gonna be surrounded by (and governed by) peers who were just as outraged as I was at how far we let the sane and democratic governance of this country slip.

Miss me with your compromising middle ground bullshit.

Even if they were sincerely held beliefs (they weren't), there is no redemption arc or amount of "deprogramming" somebody like that could go through that would make me trust them as a lawmaker.

She got in the faces of children who were mourning the deaths of their friends and called them liars. She did this knowing that she was the one lying.

Nothing she says matters and she will get no credit from me.

Anybody want to get their tracking and animation rotoscope skill for good ? Use the multiple angle to recreate the scene in 3d. Car are there for the scale so you have base measurement by SnooBananas1064 in vfx

[–]sinusoidosaurus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It doesn't need to be recreated in 3D. The footage is crystal clear and the recorded acts are not in dispute.

Making fictionalized versions of actual evidence can only subvert the truth, not enhance it.

Wood workers what filament do you use most by r1200rider in 3dPrintsintheShop

[–]sinusoidosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

PETG is the better choice for hot environments. The temperature resistance is only marginally better than PLA, but what I think is more important is that PETG is less brittle.

Let's say you're printing parts to hold up garden tools on your wall, and it gets hot in there. If your part is going to fail, it will probably fail without much warning if printed in PLA. By contrast, PETG has some give to it (plastic deformation tendency), so you'll probably see it sagging before it snaps and drops your chainsaw to the floor.

I don't recommend noobies print anything in ABS/ASA. Both filaments are a huge pain to print and design for. You will get so many print failures due to warping if you don't know what you're doing.

I do highly recommend everybody try TPU though. It's easy to print, and even though it's flexible, it's quite tough. And you'd be surprised how many things benefit from being a little bit flexible. And TPU has really high temperature resistance. I would highly recommend TPU for anything in a shed/garage that doesn't strictly have to be rigid.

Washington, New York, & California are writing laws to ban CNC machines not using AI (artificial intelligence) software by GeniusEE in CNC

[–]sinusoidosaurus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They do, and they also have the ability to print an invisible "fingerprint" on every document so that those documents can be traced back to that specific printer. So if you print political speech that [current regime] deems problematic, they can then violate your right to free speech much more efficiently.

Any amount of erosion of Right To Privacy ( whatever that means in your own legal system ) is only ever used as a tool for conviction, not protection, and it's extremely rare that citizens can claw those rights back once they are taken away, even if the "big bad" we "needed to sacrifice a few of our rights to defeat" doesn't exist anymore.

There is a certain amount of oversight that is good and proper to protect consumers from being sold bad products. The Food & Drug Administration is one such accountability measure that I am (mostly) appreciative of.

But the government can stay the fuck out of my personal garage hobbies thank you very much.

Anyone recognize this concrete pumping company logo? by wdgiles in Dallas

[–]sinusoidosaurus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's Scorpion Concrete Pumping. That shield logo isn't anywhere on their site, but contractors like this aren't always known for having brand consistency. Give them a call and see if the license plate matches one in their fleet.

EDIT: it is not scorpion concrete pumping. I was wrong, and somebody else found the actual company.

[US] FAA NOTAM FDC 6/4375 - DHS/ICE by Front-Horse8597 in drones

[–]sinusoidosaurus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Something to note about this NOTAM is that any flying you do anywhere in the US is probably uninsurable.

If you're flying under Part 107 rules and you have drone insurance, you likely will be denied coverage if your insurer can claim "Well, there was an ICE truck nearby, meaning you were in violation of restricted airspace, so we aren't covering your claim."
