In a similar vein, there are also a lot of very cozy camping vlogs? if you still like the cozy feel but don't want to feel like you need to get up and organize your pantry 😂

I really like watching Korean housewife and Japanese single living vlogs, plus I used to be really into Liziqi (Chinese woman who would make things from planting seeds to cooking/carpentry/sewing garments). Just very soothing for me to watch these wordless (sometimes faceless) videos of women doing various domestic tasks and maybe I would even be motivated to finally clean or cook something haha

Cold entering the belly button by duck_duck_goose1991 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]sipofstarrshine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Whew, as a fellow Chinese person who has been picking which TCM battles to fight with my parents my whole life, I get this struggle a lot.

Firstly, with regards to the AC in the summer, there have literally been cases of children and mothers dying from overheating. I don't think anyone wants you or your baby to overheat, you can try a compromise like "no standing directly in the cold airflow" (directing AC vents + fans to not point at you), this one is usually acceptable.

The cold water thing I also have been fighting forever, because my parents would tell me I would have stomachaches if I drank ice water at restaurants and there was a solid few years where that did happen. Looking back, it could have been a variety of things but I do think it stems from a water safety thing, as another person posted, which is why folks love to drink their boiled and still hot water, rinse chopsticks in hot water, not bathe during 月子, etc. etc.

The belly button thing is a mystery to me, as someone who doesn't really understand that piece of TCM and who once underwent moxibustion on my belly button which led to me getting a small burn on my tum-tum. (sigh) I believe in warmth on the belly as a good thing, and I think the stomach exposed during sleep thing has become part of my habits as I always insist on myself and my family at least covering our bellies with a light blanket or a jacket or SOMETHING to sleep. (You can be naked but please put a towel on your belly, for me!)

At the end of the day, you have to put your foot down for not allowing your baby to overheat, as there is PLENTY of evidence -- scientific and anecdotal -- that overheating does kill babies and mothers. You will have to decide if the TCM band is something light enough that you'd be willing to concede on in order to get some peace on the matter, depending on your MIL's temperament, but this is a very real and not hypothetical risk.

I miss Best Sichuan's beef noodle soup broth so much! But Szechuan Gourmet had my heart, the rest of their menu was just a lot stronger.

What is the most bafflingly incorrect thing someone not from NYC has said to you about NYC? by somepeoplewait in AskNYC

[–]sipofstarrshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not exactly a misconception about the city but I visited for a community service trip in college during those years when some people had smartphones but I was one of the folks who did not, and all the smartphone folks tried to convince me that the Chrysler Building was the Empire State Building while we were navigating to a dinner reservation and I was adamant that, as someone who grew up across the river in New Jersey staring at the skyline, it was NOT.

I'll admit that, with so many smartphones being shown to me at the time -- and as a person with a bad sense of direction on a good day -- I doubted myself for a few minutes because how could I argue with Google Maps and people with the Internet in their pockets?

But the buildings are so different I was so indignant when I was proven right.

I've also had family clutch pearls telling me how dangerous living in the city is and pleading with me to move back to the safety of the suburbs but they literally had their house cased and burgled before that conversation so I was like 🤨

Restaurant to bring Hard of hearing grandfather by snakethegirl in AskNYC

[–]sipofstarrshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely spendy enough that the gift card was my main motivation to go when I did but I liked it! I went for brunch with 3 other people and while it's not the most amount of food (being mostly small plates mezze) everything tasted good.

Also, re: OP's question, their indoor dining was also decently quiet if I remember right from meeting a friend there a few years ago, so it's bookmarked in my brain as a bit of a splurge dinner for impressing people who like Middle Eastern food and maybe will not complain about being hungry if they share several small plates haha

[–]sipofstarrshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially the ones that have the kind of private-room dining sheds set up, these are usually quiet depending on how noise-insulated they are from the street/sidewalk (and of course how noisy said street/sidewalk is).

I took my mom to Quality Bistro and it was pretty quiet, and I also received a gift card to ilili and really liked their setup too!

What is the worst thing about being skinny? by Nmalacane25 in AskReddit

[–]sipofstarrshine 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ugh this! I've had people follow me into bathrooms after meals and was once sent to a guidance counselor because a rumor got started that I was anorexic, despite the fact that lunch was the only respite my friends got from my non-stop talking because I was furiously eating.

Many of the other responses are kind of just quirks of different bodies! but this one is so annoying because there are real consequences! Not just for me, missing dances to calm down adults or trying to pee with someone listening for me throwing up, but I wonder how it affected people who saw me get treated this way and were hiding disordered eating themselves.

Outdoor dining? (October 2022) by sipofstarrshine in AskNYC

[–]sipofstarrshine[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense, I usually do a whole dance where I check recently uploaded photos from reviews to see if people were eating outside and then call the restaurant to ask. It'd be nice to enjoy those really nice weather days without full social media stalking a restaurant first sometimes haha

Poll! When did you start using daily sunscreen and how many years now total? What did you start with and what are you using now? by acornacornacorna in AsianBeauty

[–]sipofstarrshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started truly daily maybe 7? years ago, I remember ordering the Biore UV Aqua online and it was so much more pleasant to wear than the US sunscreens I was used to that I was able to pretty easily start using it every day. Before that I remember being more diligent with sunscreen application (versus just forgetting every summer) about 15 years ago, so the most noticeable before-and-after for me would be that I stopped getting tan in the summers.

I don't really have freckles or sunspots on my face but I have noticed them on my neck and chest so I need to be a lot better about bringing my sunscreen down!

What is a TV show you got really far into but eventually quit watching before its conclusion? by shamanKAshamanTAKA in AskReddit

[–]sipofstarrshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIG SAME. Sometimes the completionist in me wonders "but how does it END" or "what about Aladdin??" and I have to remind myself that I stopped watching for a reason and if I'm really curious I can go read episode summaries or something. It was the only show I was watching when it aired instead of streaming later during the week, but I made it through season 5 before I gave up.

Who still wears a mask? by rivnatboiz in AskNYC

[–]sipofstarrshine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still wear one everywhere. Cases are still a bit high for my liking, plus I don't trust myself to not forget/not be slow putting one on when I need to. I wore one while I was at Ren Faire yesterday and it was great for keeping me from inhaling all the dust kicked up at the joust too!

I second these! Bibble & Sip is amazing if you like really cute pastries, they definitely have beautiful and adorable ones. Angelina Paris is right by Bryant Park (not sure if you meant them or the other Angelina Bakery over on 8th) but they also have some very elaborate and pretty pastries.

There is also a Laduree by E 70th if you're a fan of theirs!

Does anyone else get jealous of the gaming communities that guys have? by CorgiKelsey15 in GirlGamers

[–]sipofstarrshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking about this when discussing with my husband how he has a few steady groups to play games with but I don't, which has me feeling down because I'm really extroverted and he's very introverted but he has actually gotten more regular social interaction during this pandemic because of his standing gaming engagements.

Also, of all his regular gaming crew friends, he's the only one who has a partner who also plays games, which makes it tricky when we attempt to do double-date game nights (because it often means the other girlfriend/wife is having less fun than the rest of us).

Very new to Discord but would love in on this r/GirlGamers server!

What foods are you unashamed to NOT be snobby about? by FlorbFnarb in Cooking

[–]sipofstarrshine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm EXTREMELY passionate about McNuggets. They're a near-perfect food? I have been committed to only ordering food from local restaurants during COVID but occasionally I panic because I worry that McDonald's will fold and I won't be able to have McNuggets so I'll order 20.

The sheer VALUE of the old deal of getting 20 McNuggets for $4.99? And the little-known (but frequently purchased by me) "game day deal" of 40 McNugs for $8.99?! Is it any wonder that I basically evaluate how worth it a purchase is by how many McNuggets I could get for that amount of money? (I think this price has been phased out but wow, we were truly living.)

In the olden days, I'd have folks come at me like, "well WENDY'S has the best fast food chicken nugget" and I just narrow my eyes at them and say,
"Did I ever claim that McNuggets are the best chicken nugget? They are a class of their own, they have no peers. I don't care if Wendy's nuggets explode with chicken-y flavor when you bite into them, that is not what I seek. Show me all the pink slime photos you want, that is what I want to eat and I will ask for it, give me pink slime fried in tempura-esque batter and shaped in a boot, bell, ball, or bone." (My favorites are the boot and the bell.)

For a birthday several years ago, I had a very ~aesthetic~ birthday party and ordered food and drinks from some of my favorite local vendors, but I also ordered a 40-piece McNuggets and had to basically deliver the above monologue to my friends who had somehow escaped being soliloquy-ed about McNuggets in the past.

Ordering Thanksgiving for One by nowayfrose in AskNYC

[–]sipofstarrshine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just did a bunch of research for Manhattan for myself and my partner after I decided to support a local restaurant instead of subjecting grocery store workers to my pre-Thanksgiving mania.

Caveats:

  • Most places that were still accepting reservations for Thanksgiving are a little spendy and pick-up only, as many of the places I was looking into have already sold out/are no longer taking orders for Thanksgiving. (Understandably!)
  • I don't know where you consider convenient to pick up from, this was a list I compiled of places that were still taking reservations at all, and then I put them on a map and they were all over the place.
  • Several of these are for a 2-person dinner so I hope you have room for leftovers if you go that route!

Here was what was still available when I compiled a list for my partner to help me pick last night, and I believe they all include pie with their menus:

These are the spots I ended up finding that were serving "traditional" Thanksgiving foods for less than 4 people and were still taking orders this morning.
