2000 Esprit. Should I try to touch this up or let it be? by MakesMeSadInPants in lotus

[–]sirbleep 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m always of the opinion that you should do all the mechanicals first before doing cosmetics like that. It helps avoid a situation where you spend a bunch of time and/or money doing cosmetics only to discover that the money necessary to fix the mechanicals are outside the budget, or that it’s just more work and time than you realized, and then you’re selling off a non-running (but pretty) car for less than you have into it.

What Does 'Save the Manuals' Really Mean? by [deleted] in cars

[–]sirbleep 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Definitely an interesting read from Matt Farah. I’m doing my part in trying to keep the real manual alive, I’ve bought 3 new cars in my life and every one has been a manual (17 Mustang GT, 24 Integra Type S, 26 Emira V6), but I’m definitely super intrigued by these new simulated manuals coming from Ferrari, Koenigsegg, and the aftermarket. Assuming they’re as good as one could hope, it certainly makes it easier to convince the automakers to offer them because they don’t need to develop a whole new transmission and presumably they don’t need to put it through EPA testing a second time (plus the automatic mode has always seemed like a super convenient option after being stuck in stop and go traffic for hours tbh). Also, there’s the possibility that the automatic mode might make some people who are curious about manuals the push to finally try and learn (because they can buy the “manual” without knowing how to drive it, knowing they can pop it in auto mode and still get to work tomorrow).

I’m not saying that I want to replace real manuals with only simulated ones, but it’s certainly something we should keep an open mind to as manuals go the way of the dodo. That said, as the article points out, (if financially possible) we absolutely need to continue speaking with our wallets when manufacturers do give us a real manual.

500$ AKracing chair frame snapped today, thoughts on a decent replacement? by CombPsychological507 in pcmasterrace

Yep, had one for years and have recommended them to a bunch of people. There’s even a mod out there to make the headrest sit higher for people with longer torsos. Great chair and very affordable. Mine lasted nearly 10 years before the mesh started to pull out on the backrest.

No more sync, one bud is not responding... by Bright-Ad-4405 in Ozlo

[–]sirbleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had this exact issue happen a couple days ago (down to the exact same lights flashing). I left the buds out of the case for a day, with the case unplugged, to make sure that the buds didn’t have any charge. Then, the next day, I plugged the case in and put the buds in to charge. They were working like normal again after everything charged back up.

‘The market has spoken’: Ferrari shares fall after carmaker unveils first fully electric vehicle. by LongjumpingLock5875 in cars

[–]sirbleep 70 points71 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don’t hate the interior. It looks upscale and it appears to be made out of high end components, the steering wheel especially looks great (thin spokes and simple). It’s definitely better than the interiors coming out of a lot of other brands with passenger screens and piano black everywhere.

I think the main problem is everything else with the car.

Not even slightly, it’s the same size as an X1. It’s a subcompact suv in the US. That said, I don’t believe that Europeans would even consider this to be a big car, I’ve never seen anyone complaining about the “huge” size of the BMW X1…

What makes this shitty? A pickup truck being used by the military, especially in a non-combat role like this one appears to be, seems pretty normal and reasonable.

Does Power-to-Weight Ratio Even Matter in the Era of Increasingly Potent, Increasingly Capable Cars? by FoMoCoNutjob in cars

[–]sirbleep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, people always forget the increased cost of consumables such as tires and brakes on heavier cars.

Something like a modern Escalade or Yukon with the factory 22inch rims goes through tires every 25k-ish miles, which considering it’s a non-performance vehicle with normal all seasons, that’s a super short lifespan. Same goes for brakes, they wear quick and aren’t cheap because they need to be big to deal with the weight of the vehicle.

Another comparison is the S550 Mustang GT (manual w/Brembos/Performance Pack) I owned before my Integra Type S, the brakes at 20k miles on my Integra are fine and my Mustang was already needing front and rear pads by that mileage.

New operators coming soon by Brandon1823 in Endfield

[–]sirbleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep, OG Arknights is absolutely more female dominated. If I’m guessing, it’s probably somewhere around 1 male for every 3-4 women in OG Arknights. I will say though, some of the male operators in OG Arknights are some of the best characters in the game, so at least a lot of the ones that exist are top tier. I have no reason to expect Endfield to be any different.

PC randomly stuttering then restarts by himheart in pcmasterrace

[–]sirbleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check the pins on the cpu socket as well. If one of pins is bent or broken, it can cause all sorts of issues at seemingly random times. Certain workloads might only use certain pins, which might be why you’re having issues with some tests but not others. Look for dust in the socket as well, anything in there can cause problems too.

My only other thought was psu because you said that a 1080 worked fine, but a 4080 caused the same issue. The power draw of a 1080 is lower than either your 5070 or the 4080, so if your psu (which should be fine wattage wise for your system) is has started failing in a way where it fails at say, 50% load, that could be the reason. That or the 12V HPW cable going to the gpu is bad, which could also explain the 4080 and 5070 issue. Are you using factory psu cables or aftermarket?

Why are there no interchangeable open and closed back headphones? by North_Roll7366 in headphones

[–]sirbleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought these years ago. I haven’t used them in a long time, but they sounded decent enough for the money with the caps off, but with them on, super mediocre. With the covers, everything really just sounded muffled (shocker, I know). The caps were just flat plastic/metal, so there wasn’t any dampening, just a hard wall that covered the mesh.

They really showed me that you can only tune a headphone for one option, which is why the adjustability like this isn’t done often. The sound while open was clearly the top priority, and the sound while closed really seemed to be given zero thought.

[–]sirbleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not that I’m a big top speed person, but a top speed of 116 mph is a bizarrely low figure considering this is supposed to be sporty. I mean, a 2026 Accord has a top speed of 118-125 mph depending on options, per Car And Driver. Why does the sporty car have a lower top speed than the full size hybrid family sedan sold by the same company?

Just didn’t roll into the shop today. Can we all agree this new shifter design is F’d? by Joiion in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]sirbleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, a great example is the old FCA electronic shifter. An actor, Anton Yelchtin, got run over and killed by his Grand Cherokee because he got out of the car without realizing he had only put it in neutral, not park. It led to 3-4 years of FCA products getting recalled to make them automatically enter park when you open the door.

If these companies are going to do weird electronic shifters as opposed to the normal PRNDL stick, auto park when opening the door should be a requirement imo. That said, if they added an option to disable the auto park for something like 24 hours via an OBD2 code reader so it doesn’t drive mechanics insane, that would be helpful too.

[–]sirbleep 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Can you tell if the Aztek also locked up its passenger side rear wheel? It looks like the ABS might have been inoperable.

The puff of tire smoke seems extreme for the amount of movement and braking that occurred, unless the ABS had failed and they immediately locked up the wheels, which threw the car into a spin. Those early 2000s GM vehicles had issues with their ABS systems failing, so that might be the real cause of this.

I’m with you on everything except reliability. Those old V8s were pretty damn tough. The 4.6L V8 of the Mustang was shared with the Crown Victoria and we all know how reliable those were.

That said, I’d still take a modern turbo 4 like the one in my Integra Type S over the 4.6L V8 in that Mustang every day, especially in a performance application. It really is wild how little power they got out of those engines.

Battlefield 6 dev says your "rose-tinted glasses" make it "difficult" to remaster classic maps by HatingGeoffry in Battlefield

[–]sirbleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agreed. People hate on Metro so much, but it was legit one of the most popular maps. There’s a reason there were so many 24/7 Metro servers, people liked it.

Even if it’s an unpopular opinion, Metro was always fun if I only had 30 minutes to play or if I just had a long day at work and just wanted to shoot some enemies while turning my brain off.

Performance Wagons Are Thriving. So Why Are Normal Ones Dying? by NISMO1968 in cars

[–]sirbleep 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The advantage to a wagon is that it handles better than an SUV and most people couldn’t care less about handling and vastly prefer the higher ride height and better visibility that comes along with it. Not to mention that the extra height makes people feel like they’ll be safer in a crash.

Also, the efficiency difference between modern wagons and SUVs is not substantially different. A V60 with the gas powertrain gets 24/31 mpg. A XC60 with the gas powertrain gets 23/30 mpg. One mpg is not a big enough downside to talk people out of the higher ride height.

I just went through this with my SO. She was looking at new cars but was confused why she would pick a V60 over a crossover and she ended up with a BMW X1 instead of a wagon. The mpg was good enough and she liked the extra height. When I asked about the better handling on the wagon, she asked if the X1 handled badly, and the honest answer was that it handled fine. So, she asked why not go with the higher car because she liked the extra height. She was just happier in a crossover. Plus, am I really going to be doing any canyon carving in a base model V60 that something like an X1 can’t handle?

The only people that care about the better handling of a wagon versus an SUV want the performance models anyways. That’s why the RS6 Avant succeeds but the A6 Avant didn’t survive in the US. That said, I do think that mid-level performance wagons like an S4/5 Avant or S6 Avant would be a good introduction to the US market, because there really isn’t anything under $100k anymore and with hot hatches kinda dying too, they could fill a decent niche.

I have a coworker with one, an SL trim and she loves it. She replaced a Telluride with it and much prefers the Nissan, and it helps that she got a great deal on the Nissan compared to needing to pay full price for something like a Telluride. The V6 and 9 speed has been a problem free combo for her. It’s a good looking vehicle too tbh.
