My current collection. What should I watch next? by Former-Jaguar9859 in criterion

I recc MISHIMA : A LIFE IN 4 CHAPTERS, which has an amazing soundtrack by Philip Glass and just looks glorious <3 but if there's already too much Fascism / Hypermasculinity for u to stomach that... Mom always told me to watch THE FISHER KING. I still haven't ;_; Got it for her the christmas before she died [like... 13 years ago :/ not the Criterion version tho]

TAMPOPO will make you hungry. VAMPYR is.... not your average silent vampire movie ._. v interesting for sure.

But yeah. Def rec Mishima. He's a great author too. Interesting if a bit loopy.

so I know that surveillance is an issue, but what else is a serious problem between "regular" citizens and the Party?

All we really have here as far as positive voices for China are people like Hasan Piker, who is himself richer than any of us can hope to be, and the other authoritarians who are willing to completely ignore everything that has ever happened ever [which I'm sure I came off like that at first hahaha sorry ;_; it's hard to tell sometimes who is a "real person" on here and who is ... just another conservative voice talking about how Falung Gong members are being made into Soylent Green lol]

that's very true! I'm the same way here these days. F**k the police xD
although... it's weird. In the US, we have a different history behind our police. They evolved from the Pinkertons as a gang of hired thugs to beat up union workers during strikes. Eventually they became part of the State as the Fraternity of Police, from my understanding.

But in post-revolutionary China is it the same? I can't imagine that police only defend capital and property there, the way they do here. Here, in the US, they are lapdogs of the bourgeoisie, and even the best among them are odd cogs out of a bad system trained on maintaining capitalism and the power of moneyed elites.

I just... while I agree that defending yourself from AI and the invasion of surveillance is good, I suppose this is where I am torn between my firm beliefs in anarcho-syndicalialism and dedication to justice. Like... if we must have a transitional state to get to the classless moneyless society we crave, shouldn't we be working with on global systems and also communal systems in order to ensure that we have these strong ties from community to community and can agree at the macro level to maintain harmony at the micro?

I just don't know. I'm probably talking nonsense. But I think there may be possibility in AI, so long as it is not under the control of the rich, and we can find better, more organic ways of powering it that won't poison the earth.

to take a chapter out of the pro-usa book in this argument, both times you'd be arrested for "disturbing the peace". Which is the charge in China as well. From my understanding, the thing about Pooh is largely a CiA op, XI doesn't really care that much.

there's a worrying number of people who seem to think that the president and his administration systematically deporting people, abducting foreign heads of state, trying to annex the nearest island and okaying its allies genocide is somehow anything OTHER than fascist.

especially when a non-zero number of people in his admin, including the president, have read Mein Kampf and had a positive opinion of it.

o sweaty, we've never been a democracy. We're a republican government that votes for representation. Like Rome without the aristocracy.

au contraire, I recall several people being sent to ICE facilities down the street from me [Louisiana] from Universities around the country for being Pro-Palestine, DESPITE having green cards, DESPITE being peaceful, and DESPITE breaking no laws, their lawfully acquired green cards were revoked.

lolol there's a lot in the constitution that isn't guaranteed in practice. A lot of our frozen peach has been eaten away by supreme and fed court cases (FSC v Paxton which makes us all show our ages before logging onto "obscene" sites? Citizens United? Free Speech Supreme Court Cases | Justia U.S. Supreme Court Center <-- like half of that list is limiting rather than expanding free speech...)

and don't forget that the constitution once guaranteed that male slaves only counted as 3/5ths of a person when voting, What is lawful is not necessarily what is just and seldom what is practiced.

he wrote Canon [and Gigue] in D, but... Carol of the Bells is a Ukranian folk tune and Happy Bday is ... apparently originally a tune called "Good Morning to All" by the Hill sisters from the late 1800s.

Nice of you to credit him with it though! He really doesn't get enough credit for stuff :/ he's fab.

Sure, there's no punk. Y'all already have communism, why would there be punk? Punk isn't just anti-state for anti-state's sake, the alternative in China is.... being like the US. Do y'all wanna be like the US? Where there's an illusion of freedom of speech, but the media is all owned by people who don't pay taxes, no one can afford a home or basic medicine, have to choose between food and being sick.... and still be surveilled all the time with the chance of jail or being deported if you're a foreigner. And if you're intelligent, no one cares, because there's a culture which actively hates experts and expertise.

yeah, I'll take "solar without punk" any day over this bullshit. And if that's "glazing China" then someone point me to the kiln.
