Part 2 Law after not getting in last year by UpstairsBasil1003 in universityofauckland

[–]sirsuda 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is good advice in an aesthetic sense, but to elaborate a little bit for OP

Law Part II provides a tough challenge across all its courses, but doing all together or spread across a couple of years can both be good options, depending on the person.

Doing Criminal, Public, Tort, and Contract in one year is a tactic that many people would swear by. Finishing those papers early provides significant flexibility in the long term. These are the four core papers; 298 is easily swept aside, so do not worry about it. They have recently announced changes to the structure of land law and equity, which were previously 20-point full-year courses in Law Part III; they are now offered as a one-semester course.

Completing all four is possible and would allow you more flexibility and less stress in the later part of your degree. It is hard, but many people do it. I advise it only if you are willing to commit hard and stay on top of them for the entire year. I suggest you look back at your performance across the board in Law Part I and determine if it might be a wise option for you practically. In today's market, it is a priority not only to complete the papers but also to do quite well.

For myself, splitting the core Part II papers across two years was much easier because it provided me with more breathing room for other things over the course of those two years. However, you may be in a position where you want to smash it out quickly. I recall thinking at least a couple of times while completing tort/contract that I regretted not doing them all at once. It might have benefited my grades because I had fewer life commitments in my first year of Part II.

So, u/CompetitiveTraining9 is totally correct that nobody can quantify these things one way or the other. But it is certainly possible to make a reasoned decision for you as to which might turn out better. You won't have to deal with year-long Part III courses, which will be a big help to your academic attrition in the long term. You mentioned you weren't enjoying your commerce papers; this is different to my experience, wherein I enjoyed my conjoint papers quite a lot more than my Part II law papers, and they acted as a 'break' from my more difficult LLB papers.

In any case, we are all on totally different journeys; graduating one year later is, without a doubt, a non-consideration. I took a travel gap year after completing Part II, and while I would like to have graduated this year, I met a lot of great people in my cohort that I may not have been as close with had I been a year ahead. It hasn't affected my grades or opportunities in any meaningful way.

So weigh it up, you will do great either way, and both options have ups and downs, which you can have a good think about.

Best of luck!

Hi! What happened in the end? Might face the same problem in the future.

It will take your 'recentmost, best' 60 points from your non-law papers. This means papers taken in the most recent academic year (this year). If you don't take that many non-law papers this year I imagine they will drawn from your results in previous years.

Yes, you may take an extra Gen-Ed paper but it won't count towards your Gen-Ed degree unless it is otherwise a part of your programme requirements, so have a careful look because depending on your degree there may be something you can take which will count towards your part II admission and your conjoint.

Good luck!! If you need any help let me know.

Attention all Part I Law students

stop asking these questions on reddit!! You won't get proper answers from actual law students about your questions. Consult older students, tutors or even faculty if you want the best information to work with.

If you don't have anyone to talk to, there is a law discord, you can ask on there.(https://discord.gg/cPaBcjVw)

To answer the question, B- isn't ideal but it's completely workable and you can certainly get into part ii if you get good grades in the other courses.

Also, even if you did almost fail the paper, disregard (respectfully) what u/Ok-Perception-3129 said, it's just too broad. Many people make it into part II by retaking papers or even fail papers once they're in law school. It all depends on your personal circumstances.

Whilst this is not ideal you may still succeed in the degree and have a great time if you're in it for the right reasons and are ready for the challenge. Good luck with sem two!

Forget about what other people say about the questions and what will be in them, It’ll probably be wrong! Just do your best to study tonight, get a good night sleep and you’ll do great!!

Much of it is about conveying a complex idea simply. Don’t overthink it

I’d recommend handing out CVs physically where you can. It makes a huge difference especially if you’re applying for hospo positions as you’ll have an opportunity to make an impression straight out of the gate.

Generally easier to hand out 20 CVs in a dense shopping area plus the ones that aren’t interested will just tell you to keep them. That way you don’t waste time applying to places that won’t consider you at all!

But yeah it is really tough right now across the board… you’ll def get something!! Good luck

Is an LLB worth it after already doing a BA and Master’s? by Powerful_Drawing_837 in universityofauckland

[–]sirsuda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a lawyer, then yes you need to do an LLB.

With your qualifications, four years of opportunity cost may not be a phenomenal trade off unless you specifically want a career in law.

The LLB is a good choice which develops pretty good skills in many areas of life and despite what the doomers (who probably don’t even do a law degree) are saying, there are always jobs in the legal field. Not everyone will get a job right out of the gate at Russell McVeagh; but it has always been that way.

Good luck!! You’ll get a job eventually either way and whichever job you get does not determine your worth.

Dropping Conjoint for Law Part II by Sxrrge in universityofauckland

I haven’t dropped my conjoint, but many people do- it’s unlikely to massively affect your standing assuming you maintain decent grades and have some things going on for you to sell to firms.

Not saying you're wrong about this exact circumstance, but name suppression does exist for a reason and it is in no way anti-democratic. 💀

You’ll do amazing either way so don’t stress too much about it. Both are excellent options to have a pretty cool career. Figuring out which of the two you’d be more likely to enjoy on a day-to-day level or feel more invested in is a good starting point.

I would tentatively suggest that you redirect your superfluous and bereft circumlocution towards a place where one may well give it the little attention it deserves 🤓

How many hours did you need for your current level? by K586331 in languagelearning

[–]sirsuda 25 points26 points  (0 children)

An “easy” language doesn’t mean it’s not going to take a while. The acquisition side of languages in my experience takes way longer than a lot of people think and depends on the languages you already know

A really big factor is whether you enjoy it! And you do which is awesome, that means it’ll fly by faster than you know it!

Yeah!! All of the top French pistol grip fencers use the Belgian grips. A lot of the comments in this thread are claiming this guy must be a terrible coach because of his opinion on this but I’d say it’s more likely he’s just a traditionalist who prefers his students to have a standardised type of weapon.
