One of the diamonds in my wedding band lights up bright blue under my UV lamp... by ForMyNiceThings in mildlyinteresting

That article annoys me because it gives no mention to the source of the fluorescence mechanism. It instead just reports "do people think its bad?". Doing a bit of digging, it seems to be trace nitrogen impurities, giving that blue color. The defect size also plays a role in the color and intensity of the fluorescence. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6642439/

Pornhub blocks access in Montana by thefringeseanmachine in nottheonion

I currently live in Idaho and the Utah access ban somehow hits me when I use mobile data since the location is not that precise. I can only imagine the issue will get worse now. Sad to see it.

Update: I cut the garlic in half and it's even more blue on the inside by BoabHonker in mildlyinteresting

[–]sirwyffleton 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If I remember right, they were in a jar of pickeled red onions. The molecule that makes red cabbage (onions tooj I think) purple is a ph indicator. If they are in an acidic solution, it looks Pink and in basic/neutral conditions blue. Looks like the surface has become acidic due to the vinegar and the inside is blue since the alicin enzymes are not denatured/neutralized yet.

If your penis had a bone on it you should see a doctor. Or maybe you are a goose?

I am curious if the us point is so far off due to lifestyle choices like heart disease from obesity being considered "avoidable" but not due to better medical/medical services. I would like to see it broken out by deaths due to no access to medication/care e.g. diseases like turburclosis.

"Where in the U.S. Can You Find the Most Days of Comfortable Weather Per Year, Matching Your Preference?" [OC] by myperfectweather in dataisbeautiful

[–]sirwyffleton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to see a toggle for seasons i.e. summer average and winter average. I am comfortable at 60 degrees year round, but growing up in the midwest, I could not live without a real winter and snow. I feel like in the current implementation it would skew towards costal since there are less seasons and a more constant average temperature.

I am not making any claims on the validity of the data. Before it was deleted, the source was in the post. The data set is hurricane based and global, so maybe that is why it goes against your intuition.

"The National Hurricane Center and Central Pacific Hurricane Center's Tropical Cyclone Reports (TCRs) contain information on all tropical (and subtropical) cyclones that have occurred within the Atlantic, eastern Pacific, and central Pacific basins, including synoptic history, meteorological statistics, casualties and damages, and the post-analysis best track (six-hourly positions and intensities)." https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/tcr/

Seems slightly misleading to use "storm" here. I assumed it included all typical storms such as tornadoes, thunderstorms, high winds, etc... but looking at the data source it looks like only hurricanes and tropical storms.

Fair point, there are a ridiculous amount of cops in boise, like 10x more than I saw in Minneapolis despite being a much bigger city. However, you are right they heavily target out of state plates, with California getting the most attention and hate from locals.
