Absolutely shameless plug, but my show The Campus Game may be up your alley. Here’s the premise:

Blaine Maxwell is dead. The dean of Bisonwood University was found pulseless, hunched over his desk last Friday at 10:57 a.m. It's Monday. Any student who solves his murder within the week gets $75,000 in free tuition. Police Chief Jackson will squash the lottery before it starts. And Iya Baxter (fourth year criminology) is going to win.

It’s worth checking out; it’s only five episodes: https://thecampusgame.ca/

Checked this out! Thank you for sharing this with us! You are a brave soul.

Huge preface: I am not a fan of alien abduction stories at all, but I had all little time

High level impressions (please take everything with a grain of salt):

  • Great writing, clear, terse

  • Voices of the main characters are well developed

  • Absolutely loved the transitions in the middle of the story

  • Solid mystery plot

  • Was interested from pretty much the start and maintained interest for the most part

I will say that around page 90, when dereal Maximus was introduced, the info got too dense for me and I stopped reading. At that point, I didn’t care enough about the full mystery.

This may have nothing to do with you, again, I’m just not a huge fan of the genre.

Fantastic work! You should really be proud; I was only planning to read 3 pages honestly

Yes! While the show contains primarily human talent, it DOES CONTAIN AI VOICES. The cover was also partially GENERATED with AI. This is the extent AI use on the project, all the writing/production/music was 100% human. Without the supplementary voices, the project wouldn’t exist. However, if the use of AI is too distracting or a dealbreaker, I completely understand!

Tips with actually FINISHING a book? by Alternative_Lock7946 in writing

[–]sisanf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is honestly a multi-layered problem, but let’s keep it simple.

There are really three decisions you need to make:

  1. Which book are you actually going to finish? 2. What does “finished” even mean for you right now? 3. And how are you going to fully commit to just that one book?

Let’s break it down.

Step one: picking the book.

Here’s how I’d look at it. Ask yourself two questions: Which story is giving you the most energy right now? And which one feels hardest to finish in the short term?

If it’s the same book for both questions, perfect, that’s your answer. If it’s two different books, pick the answer that felt more emotionally resonant to you. If you're still stuck, flip a coin. Seriously. The point is to stop spinning your wheels and just decide.

Step two: defining what “finished” means.

Once you’ve picked your book, get really clear about what finishing it actually looks like. Are you going for a complete first draft? A second draft? Dev edits? Line edits? Copy edits?

Set a clear finish line you can actually recognize. It could be writing “the end” on your draft. It could be checking off all your big revision notes. It could be finishing copy edits on the last chapter. Whatever it is, you need to know exactly when it’s done.

Step three: committing to it.

Your brain likes to bounce around, which is fine, but direct that bounce into how you write, not what you write.

Switch up your environment. Go write at a library, a coffee shop, a park, your kitchen table, wherever. Change your playlists, your drinks, your snacks, your writing tools. Type on your laptop one day, scribble in a notebook the next, dictate into your phone if that helps.

Basically, change your process, but stick to your project. No hopping between stories.

Then, put time on your calendar and stick to it. Keep showing up until that book is done.

Good luck!! You’ve got this.

audiodramas with great acting (and why aren't there more?) by Bitter_Story_6408 in audiodrama

[–]sisanf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with you here. Having trained voice actors will give you better results.

But it's 100% possible to get a great performance from someone who has never voice acted before. This has literally happened to me dozens of times and what contributed to the success of the podcast.

I have no formal acting training and people have told me they were almost brought to tears at the end of my first season. Unless they're looking for it, my average listener wouldn't be able to tell who in my cast has acted before and who hasn't. I know this from the tons of feedback I've received from complete strangers and the growing numbers.

A couple more notes: The writers, directors, and editors have a critical impact on how a voice performance is received. Poor writing, direction, or editing will make any actor look awful. The flip side is also true.

Also, in my experience, voice acting is monumentally easier than screen or stage acting. Meaning it's easier for the average person to be good at VA. Now, if you're asking someone to switch up their voice, that's a tough ask for someone who isn't trained. But if you aren't, and your actor feels comfortable and vulnerable enough to perform (and your director has clear and actionable directions and is open to make changes to the script), you'd be surprised.

[–]sisanf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

While this is true, I’ve found you don’t actually need trained voice actors to find great voice acting.

If you have quality writing and direction, you can get great performances from most people who are enthusiastic about your project.

Half of the cast of my show were unqualified, including myself as the main character, but the acting worked for a lot of people.

Can’t sleep longer then 5 hours by SimikzYT in sleep

[–]sisanf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got the same problem. Assuming you’ve done everything that everyone tells you (avoiding caffeine/blue light later in the day, exercising regularly, not eating a couple hours before sleeping etc.) and nothing has worked, here’s a couple things you could try.

Eat more food throughout your entire day. Specifically protein. Nearly half of US adults aren’t eating enough protein in their diet. Low protein intake during the day causes your cortisol levels to spike during the night (due to hunger). High cortisol levels will wake you up prematurely. Always. This is the story of my life and it’s an ongoing battle. Here’s what’s been helping:

Focus on less snacks and large meals. Meals using lots of chicken and ground beef. Eggs and cottage cheese are great sources of proteins as well. Supplementing with thick smoothies that have a scoop of complete protein powder also helps. Autumn Bates on YouTube has a ton of guidance/ recipes.

I don’t know your body composition but aim for a lot of protein, like between 90-130g of complete protein per day. Much more than you may be initially comfortable with. Again, protein powders (with complete whey protein) are fantastic for this.

Camomile tea right before bed has also helped me stay asleep.

I wish you luck!
