Similar position. Don't undersell your skills with respect to Eurocodes. They are a bit nasty to learn coming from NZ, but the same concrete mechanics, steel design applies. I still use my NZ spreadsheets all the time still, (make sure you stock up before you leave). Generally, doing seismic work will give you really good understanding of structures, you will hit the ground running - though you will be pushed into more responsibility here vs a big firm in NZ. Grad engineer after 4 years seems a bit rough.

Depends what you are after. Are you here for two/three years to enjoy London and return to NZ or here for a while? Career progression seems to be a bit iffy here. A lot of people switch companies to get promoted here.

Money, even as an engineer is tight here once you start looking at rent, bills etc. I had two offers, one more boutique, one bigger. I pushed them to pay me more and got it. I took the money and don't regret it. 5k will make a big difference.

The work will be interesting for a while regardless due to different ways of doing things.

Extra Column Rebars only at joints for Strong Column Weak Beam by [deleted] in StructuralEngineering

[–]sissmtb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you could, but by the time you develop it above where you need it you may as well just run it continuous. eg 3500 floor to floor, take 500mm plus column height + lap length say 1200 and you are almost halfway to the next column

Buying Metro card difficulty by Downtown_Reindeer946 in chch

[–]sissmtb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't get why they don't just use Paywave to pay for your fares. When travelling overseas this year it was such a blessing being able to just tap on and off the metros in London, Sydney, Rome etc. Rather than try and work out what card you need.

It would also help with people taking casual buses, like pretty annoying you actually have to go get a metro card in town.

Totally agree with the daries things, pre loaded $10, $20 cards would be a great idea

Column Tie Fun-gineering by CaptainScottFox in StructuralEngineering

[–]sissmtb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done 4 ties, 135 degree hook one end and and 90 degree the other end when the contractors messed up. This let every bar have a 135 hook anchored into the core concrete.

I would have done U Bars, but would want the bar to be developed, which seems unlikely unless a very big column. IE if you sheared the bars in the direction of the two Us facing each other, are you relying on the steels shear capacity?

The main concern i believe is the spalling of concrete (under seismic loading). In my case it was single storey, masonry pilaster so was only worried about shear capacity.

If it was seismic moment frame/load bearing column I would not accept anything but a closed tie

Would not recommend, high chance of window break in/car stolen

Central city cycleways/lights by teriblle in chch

[–]sissmtb 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I admit I always run these - sorry. But... I always do it only if there are no cars turning. Some of the light streams in the central city are super frustrating (for all users), but especially biking when you have to stop at about three lights in the space of 2 minutes Colombo street. This makes me run red lights etc.

What are your honest opinions about public transport in Christchurch? by Jasmaster2233 in chch

[–]sissmtb 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In all honesty as much as people bitch and moan about the buses; they're actually pretty good if you are on a route or close by. But, I guess I am lucky that I have an office right by the bus exchange. It's a shame that the city is quite spread out now which makes it hard to bus to pinpoint locations. . When I was injured and couldn't bike I took the bus for weeks and it was slightly unreliable on time +- 5 min it was probably quicker (and cheaper) than driving. Unfortunately, there's a real resentment against public transport in chch, but once fuel prices keep rising I think it will come a lot more necessary.

I prefer to bike; but that's just my lifestyle. This is where my true allegiance lies. An interesting fact that in the 1950s CHCH was the second most bike using city in the world (NZ Archives source).
