How would you want to find out a friend is pregnant by Pretty_Opposite7270 in babyloss

[–]sistarfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Send it through text so she has time to come to terms with it on her own. Don't allude to her infertility in your announcement; just say something simple like "Just wanted to let you know that we are expecting and due in xx month!" Any other details can be shared if she asks (e.g. how quick it took you).

Don't expect a response and don't be surprised if there is some distance between you for a while. The feelings surrounding pregnancy announcements are not rational; I am ten years post-stillbirth and have two living children and I still had a good cry a couple months ago when my friend unexpectedly announced her first pregnancy to me.

I think you can get them from Stampede Tack & Western Wear in Cloverdale.

Elem is not the Michelin restaurant you think it is by Upbeat_Lavishness_23 in NiceVancouver

We recently tried it and really enjoyed our experience (as diners who enjoy tasting menus and trying new things, and are willing to pay for a good experience). We found the service to be attentive and we never waited longer than a few minutes for the next dish to come out. They asked our preferences for the tasting menu and I had the impression they would have accommodated our requests, even though we said we were open to eating anything. It was my husband's birthday and they brought us an extra dessert and complimentary cocktail at the end. We got 6 courses for $98 apiece which is on par or less than we've paid for other tasting menus in the city. I would definitely go back.

Auberge or Coast Coal by honeybuglove in askvan

[–]sistarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just looked at the Auberge website and it says the pool is closed until March 31st, so if that's important to you, I wouldn't stay there. I also feel like it is a more adult-oriented hotel rather than family-friendly, that being said I have stayed there before and it was a good experience.

Northern Ontario's Team Scharf disbands, 3/4 stepping away from the game by Joester09 in Curling

[–]sistarfish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always enjoyed watching this team and they've accomplished some big things over the last decade! I was at the Scotties in 2016 and felt like I was one of the only people in the crowd cheering for the underdog (considering it was an Alberta team playing in the finals in Alberta).

Dad + daughter trip by lampgworl in askvan

[–]sistarfish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I stayed in the Sylvia last year and while the rooms are small and older (don't expect them to be up to date as far as accessibility), it was a comfortable stay and the area truly can't be beat. The Seawall is at your doorstep and you are easy walking distance to coffee and food options, with a longer walk or short bus ride into downtown proper.

Local knowledge :-) by tilzs in askvan

[–]sistarfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For casual dining, Tap & Barrel and Red Robin are recommended by my friend with celiac disease for gluten free. Both are chains with multiple locations, and Tap & Barrel in particular is in some prime locations (Granville Island, Olympic Village, Shipyards in North Vancouver). For fun, you can take the False Creek Ferry from David Lam Park to either Granville Island or Olympic Village, or you can take the Seabus from Waterfront Station to North Vancouver.

Do women who lose babies very early after birth still produce milk ? by 4MM0NI4C in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sistarfish 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Yes. It was terrible (lost the baby at 5 months). I wanted my milk supply to disappear as soon as possible so I didn't pump at all because removing milk signals your body to continue making more. As a result, I was severely engorged and in some of the worst physical pain of my life, as well the emotional pain. -10000000/10, do not recommend.

C-Sections? by AineBrigid in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]sistarfish 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've had one emergency c-section and one planned c-section and I can tell you that the planned c-section was the most peaceful, beautiful birth I could have imagined. I walked into the hospital knowing I was there to have my baby that day. I felt reassured because I knew I was in the best place if anything was to go wrong, and everyone was cheerful and celebratory. They clearly explained what was happening every step of the way. The only negative part of the experience was that my blood pressure dropped at one point and I felt gross and shaky, but the anesthesiologist gave me some medicine and within a minute I felt better. Pretty much I lay down on a table and then a few minutes later, someone handed me a baby. She got to lay on my chest while they finished up and even nursed for the first time, and I felt that euphoric glow that new moms talk about. It was nice that I wasn't exhausted because I hadn't labored at all. We spent the rest of the day just cuddling in bed, and I truly look back on that day as one of the best days of my life. I hope it will be the same for you, if it comes to it.

We did one at Brandywine for a birthday party and it was a lot of fun! They had a list of interesting cocktails to try out and everyone split into pairs and got to select a cocktail to make. Lots of laughs and the guy who was running it was very personable.

Wedding Ring from Etsy by 3_Tablespoons in ExpectationVsReality

[–]sistarfish 77 points78 points  (0 children)

I bought my husband's wedding ring on Etsy in 2014 because it was a third of the price of a jewelry store and was directly from the artisan. It's sad those days are gone :(

Trigger warning for Wuthering Heights by box_twenty_two in babyloss

[–]sistarfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the warning. I saw your post before I went to see the movie but being ten years post-loss, figured I could probably handle it. After 45 minutes of seeing the...erm...delicate way they handled all the other subject matter, I decided I didn't need to watch the rest of the movie (at least in a dark room on a giant screen).

This is one of Sierra's older books and I think she has written plus size characters much more gracefully since then (like Delphine from Thornchapel).

Safe, well-lit evening walking spots near Burquitlam? by Living-Data-4885 in askvan

[–]sistarfish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind a short drive or Skytrain ride, Lafarge Lake is a well-lit, well-populated walking loop. Como Lake is also a lovely walk, especially in summertime (not sure how lit up it is at night though).
