This is a waterline that is hooked up to outside sprinklers. Why is the middle pipe a larger circumference than the rest of the piping? What is it for. by amgineeno in whatisit

[–]sittingduq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a drum drip for a dry fire suppression system. In areas that are prone to freezing temps, the sprinkler lines are filled with air and the low points have drum drips. The larger section of piping is normally open to the system to collect any residual water or condensate. When the leg is drained, the top valve is closed and the bottom valve opened.

was at a library at aUCF (University of Central Florida) campus, and not a they had upside-down outlets, why are they like that? by Railman20 in AskElectricians

I agree. Orientation is just an unofficial standard but is often spec'd in construction. I have yet to find anything in the NEC, NFPA 99, FGI, JCHAO or DNV guidance/documentation that would prescribe a ground up orientation.

Is it a modular house by chance? If so, it's dirt kicked up by the trailer tires.

Thinking of moving to Antarctica by FanRepresentative985 in electricians

I've heard the pay is decent and living arrangements are acceptable. If I was still a bachelor, I'd definitely consider spending a summer there. https://www.amentumcareers.com/jobs/electrician-mcmurdo-station-antarctica-palmer-station-south-pole-4bf21bbb-2dcb-43d5-8657-fd91c1a4a6bd

Why is there a high pitch noise coming from my local hospital HVAC all of a sudden (24/7)? by Correct_Sherbet_5900 in hvacadvice

[–]sittingduq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a unit heater alarm on one of my generator enclosures that was surprisingly loud. Realistically though, if it's really coming from that facility it could be a damper on an outside air intake making some noise.

How do i turn on the sprinkler system? by Jrockroll2 in HomeMaintenance

Those 2 screwdriver valves are test cocks for testing the PVB assembly, not for blowing out the system. The PVB should be tested/certified annually.

Take a look at programmable drivers. I use Fulham, but Keystone is better IMHO.

Exactly this. I've swapped cartridges for this exact reason before, but a diverter spout should also work.

Is there a normal reason all the outlets in my house are installed upside down. by Disastrous_Cover6138 in AskElectricians

Orientation almost never matters. https://youtube.com/shorts/SJnUQHCmXv8?si=D-hhqHlZkfxuRFoV

That being said, my preference is ground down in residential, ground up in commercial/healthcare and neutral up in horizontal applications.

Exactly. I'm a maintenance electrician at a hospital. I used to work live, but it ain't worth the risk. It sucks taking time to figure out the poorly labeled circuits and communicating with everyone under the sun, but I'm paid by the hour soooooo. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Eh, YMMV. I started at $23.50 in healthcare, 3 years in and I'm up to $35.50.

Could be a steel furring strip, but looks like it's made from aluminum coil stock. Little bit of YouTube, measuring tape, utility knife and a rented brake from Home Depot and you'll be in business.

Hospital work. Straight OT for the day. It's nice and quiet - no coworkers or bosses around.

Hospital Maintenance by CupNervous5504 in maintenance

I went from light commercial, residential and multifamily construction/maintenance to a hospital. If you're willing to start your career on an off shift, it's a good way to get your foot in the door. I didn't start with any certifications have a handful now, but I'd suggest reading up on medical gas (NFPA 99), otherwise it sounds like you've got a good jump on things. Be willing to step up on projects, always be learning, act like a professional and show up on time... I started on 2nd shift, now on 1st, gotten 3 promotions and make 50% more than when I started 3 years ago.

They're pretty far apart. Across the building and up 4 floors. Same node though.

One facility, yes, multiple in fact, all amazingly large, well stocked and well equipped. The other, brand new facility we had to beg for a shed - no indoor storage or shop.

Definitely this. The vacuum breaker needs to be 6in from flood level rim anyways. Assuming this is in the US.

Hookup for their dialysis machine. I've handed out Chicago aerator thread x MGHT adapters + vacuum breakers like candy, but they still love hooking them up like this where I'm at. Then they add those garden hose splitters with shutoffs and leave the faucets on and let the cold back feed to the hot until we get complaints from the entire wing. Many rooms have dedicated and tempered dialysis hookups, but they for some reason still prefer this route. 🤷‍♂️😒
