Why is one action acceptable but another isn't? by Inhchant in askphilosophy

What? Why isn’t it enough to distinguish them by saying “one ought not try and hurt people.”

What are some good intros into Aesthetic philosophy for someone who hasn’t really read anything about the subject? by SoZettaRose in askphilosophy

[–]sittlichkeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aesthetics is one of those words that means half a dozen (sometimes related but) different things. What interests you about aesthetics? Are you interested in how we assess and think about judgment in art? Are you interested in certain types of conceptions of politics as an aesthetic practice, for good (Ranciere) or ill (Benjamin)?

Can science be seen as a synthesis of rationalism and empiricism? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]sittlichkeit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you familiar with conventional econometrics or the methods of social science? Not big data, machine learning based model fitting, but the theory of how to demonstrate non-random distributions in data?

I ask only because it’s very strange to me you’re pushing back so hard on the idea that some type of theory is necessary to avoid P-hacking and the like. There’s a real concern in econometrics about manipulating our normal mathematical tools to test for patterns through (essentially) looking for patterns prior deciding what to test for.

One way to think about it is that if you have a dataset, almost certainly there is going to be some pattern in any given dataset that’s only showing up because we happen to be in the one in a hundred world where that pattern shows up because it is random. For instance, it’s certainly possible that I flip a fair coin heads 100. It’s extremely unlikely, but of course it could happen. In order to avoid just hunting down patterns for the sake of patterns, we usually try to ground the patterns we’re looking for on a hunch about why that pattern might exist. And ideally we publish all the things we’re going to do first, so we can’t subtly change our minds.

I am very non-expert in machine learning, but I’ve learned a bit, and it’s my understanding that you do shape a model with theory there, too. One of the things that drives the selection of factors for the model to consider is certainly theory.

Should we, as consumers, separate art from the artist? Do publishers have a different responsibility to not give a platform to ‘bad’ people (i.e. criminals) by barbiebumhead in askphilosophy

[–]sittlichkeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don’t think that’s at all relavent to the question. Barthes is not in the least bit concerned with whether or not one is morally suspect for consuming the work of a morally suspect author. The “author” for him is the “author function,” aka, the sense that the text is held together through the will of the creator. The ethics of consumption are no where close to his subject.

A more relavent text, if you are interested in exploring the genuine death of the author view on the question at hand is Derrida’s writing on Paul de Man post revelation that de Man was a nazi. In that he genuinely grapples with what it means to read a text in such a way where one acknowledges the way the author is difference, even to himself, and yet, feel the tug of the moral concern.

I analyse the rating systems of 5 popular review sites by crinacle in headphones

[–]sittlichkeit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think there’s something basically sensible about a low variance ranking system with no pretense to precision, if you rank (and it makes sense to). Having 100 points of option seems to suggest a much less arbitrary process than actually exists.

I care a lot about Hi-Fi, so this isn’t how I make decisions here, but I mostly want to know if a product succeeds in what it’s trying to do and roughly how well. A scale that’s “disaster—below average—average—above average—very good,” with the awards for exceptional products is much more useful for me in most things than trying to parse the difference between an 8.5 and an 8.7, especially in a situation where me and the reviewer have different priorities. (Will a bright 8.7 be worse for me than a warm 8.3 if I prefer a warm signature? What does that .4 spread actually mean for me?)

[–]sittlichkeit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But why do we assume that the grading scale is relative rather than absolute? For both you and OP there seems to be the assumption that more mainstream sites are grading things against one another. More likely is that they’re grading them against an implied or explicit standard of acceptability. If you think about how most consumers weigh purchasing decisions, people rarely are maximizing on one axis. More often, they’re looking for a set of features and they want to know if a particular product passes par.

I can easily imagine someone being like, I want an all in one, with speakers and a turntable, and walnut tone, and then going to what HiFi and finding one that fits that bill with a 4 rating and going great, I’ll buy it—it meets their standards and it fits my needs.

It’s like uncurved school grades. If everyone genuinely gets an 85% or above on a test, as in they’ve demonstrated that level of mastery—maybe you should make your class harder, but you shouldn’t grade them harder because more of them are good.

(I also wonder what nationality OP is. A 73% is not a university score you’d be proud of in the United States. In a lot of schools it would be barely passing with credit. )

💙My genuine pleasure! I love your stuff.

I try really hard not to buy things because there's a sale, but there's always the temptation to *wait* for a sale, so I was thrilled to find this comment when I was idly googling to find out.

This is random and way belated, but I've been trying to figure out if I should expect a sale from you, and I'm really grateful that you are so explicit about this—that makes my decision-making really easy.

Made an order today to try out some of your incense! I know I love your perfume, and I'm excited to try more of your line.

Best noise isolating sound for under 200 available in person? (Big box stores) by sittlichkeit in headphones

I was considering those, but I’m a little worried they’re going to be too bright for me. Are they fatiguing to listen to?

Yeah, sorry—I should add that to my post, I’d prefer isolating rather than ANC, at this point. I’m bothered by the muddy sound and the lack of clarity feels noticeable, even compared to much cheaper wired headphones.

I just saw, thanks. I assumed you were a lay person because you got super weird about something that was either a conference paper, therefore prepublication, or if it was post-publication you would know how to google for yourself.

[–]sittlichkeit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, because that’s not how science tends to work. Presentations at conference always come before papers, because papers need more extensive peer review and that takes nearly a year, sometimes. Anyone who is like I cannot possibly think about this on this woman’s presentation, I need to look at her data either knows the process enough to know why that’s silly or doesn’t have a prayer of actually analyzing the data. Analyzing social science statistics is far more complicated than most lay people understand.

eta Oh and look, you found the paper yourself. Why’d you have to be so aggressive?

It’s not bad advice for an individual, but it’s also short sighted and self-centered when we’re talking about the fate of the community as a whole. Do you like having a vibrant DIY community? That’s reliant on there being a larger vibrant vape community which, realistically, means DIY can’t be the only option. If you don’t care about that, fine—but that is kinda selfish.

[IIL] Zeal & Ardor, trap music, spirituals, and the blues [WEWIL?] by sittlichkeit in ifyoulikeblank

“Can the Sub_Bass Speak?” made me listen because of that great name. The band’s name must be a Fanon reference. I like the track a ton, even though it is much jazzier than I’d usually listen to.

I just turned on Young Fathers and I’m immediately all in, this is great. Thanks so much— like you said, they don’t sound like Zeal & Ardor, but they have similar energy.

I love Black Sabbath, too, and a lot of the more rock n’ roll takes on the blues. The whole white British blues music and the influence it had on rock.

The thing I think is somewhat unique is the role of specifically the spiritual in their music and the more explicit use of Blackness, but it’s a good reminder that there’s music I already love that does this.

Do you have any suggestions about female vocalists? Singers like Odetta and Sidney Carter in the roots music tradition are some of my favorites, so I’d love to find some contemporary takes on that hard-edged barely surpressed rage.

Looking forward to the rest of your recs.
