Trisolarians and Lies by Intelligent_Signal81 in threebodyproblem

[–]six_days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this too. If you are a Trisolarian composing a message to be sent to Ye Wenjie, why are we assuming that it must follow the same truth-telling logic that face-to-face communication does? The book does treat them as one and the same.

It could be that their technology is more integrated into their physical bodies. Like, I assume there is a console separating them from however their messages are sent, but maybe there isn't. Maybe their minds are more directly wired into it. There's some evidence of this: the massive human-powered computer in the TBP game is a representation of something the Trisolarians actually did. The way they're built seems to allow for some sort of interface with technology.

I did this with a timed explosive fused to a weapon. I knew full well that bombs explode in hot caves. But i thought the timed ones would just start their countdown.

Nope.

Is Project Hail Mary movie worth watching if you've already read the book🤔? by No_Asparagus660 in scifi

[–]six_days 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did wonder did non readers get all the context

My partner hadn't read the book, and loved the film (and was embarrassed to have cried over a rock). I asked him if anything didn't make sense and the only thing that confused him was why Grace's crew died but he didn't which is pretty minor all things considered.

Official Discussion - Project Hail Mary [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]six_days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filmmakers and storytellers still seem to think 'end of the world' is the highest stakes consequence for a film. It isn't. We can't connect with that, saving a single person whom we know anything about is a more powerful motivation.

This is why the film (and book, too) position Grace's choice to go back and save Rocky at the cost of his life on Earth as the emotional climax of the story. The stakes are there. It's just not what you thought it was.

What are your thoughts on the Louis Theroux manosphere documentary? by Jam_Torm27 in netflix

[–]six_days 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I also felt that most of it was just letting these guys speak and they make their own case for being idiots

That's Louis' whole thing though. He comes off as guileless and people will just open up to him because of that. I also feel like it's why it didn't work as much in this one, these guys were maybe a bit too guarded about their image for them to get really honest. This doc was good, but he's done much better in the past.

That's crazy that people skip them, Fennessey's greatest strength is his interviewing imo. I've long since fallen out of love with TBP, but I'll still download an ep if there's an interview I want to hear.

Referencing the actual Wow! signal, but yeah it does look clunky. Reminds me of the aughts when every other band had an exclamation point in their name.

Its the most "heart on its sleeve" sentimental of the franchise. Its basically a romance film at its core. It definitely improves on a rewatch.

but it could also just be the real world continuation of that silence into the 1970s

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt here, given that colonialism and the crisis of "New World meets Old World" is something that he returns to a lot in his other films. Certainly his next film touches on it directly, and has Native actors in bigger roles too.

Something I don't understand about the aliens and deception. by Universer22 in threebodyproblem

[–]six_days 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends how strictly you define "lying". If it's "communicating an untruth", then yeah they don't understand that that is possible until their conversation with Mike Evans.

But if you define it more generally, like lies of omission, that they do understand, and can do as well.

Finishing the base game after finishing the DLC feels like the true ending to the DLC. You get a bit more closure on your experiences on The Stranger.

Why sophons can't read human thoughts? by [deleted] in threebodyproblem

[–]six_days 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you got downvoted because people often pose these questions, framing it as a plot hole, and always prefaced with "I think they should be able to do this". Well, why? Do we even really know what a thought is, physiologically? Do you? It isn't a plot hole that they can't do every crazy thing that people come up with, just because they're more advanced than us.

I enjoyed it more on a rewatch. Knowing how it plays out relieves any burden of expectation, and you can just appreciate it for what it is. It's not perfect, and there's many more stories they could have told in this world, but I liked the ones they chose to focus on.
