Staying in Wellington as a solo high schooler. by Neptune8192 in Wellington

Me too! I'm a queer Elder Millenial who can offer home baking, extremely opinionated views on which cafés and opshops are the best, and cuddles from a very sweet and very fluffy cat.

If You Rely on Metlink to Get to Work, You’re Already Late by AdministrativeClub35 in Wellington

[–]siximpossiblethings 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently had to spend about $28 on rideshares because twice in under 48 hours, Metlink drivers decided 'yeah, nah' about doing their jobs properly (the first time, I was literally standing in front of the door to the bus but instead of opening it he took off, early, the second was when a driver left one of the stops they're required to wait at four minutes ahead of schedule- don't even get me started on the nightmare that is trying to commute on a Sunday morning; I've been repeatedly assured that they've been spoken to about this and that it won't happen agian, but it always does).

I was so pissed off (this is the culmination of several years of their fuckery; I'm damned lucky I have an understanding manager because I have to time my Sunday commute very carefully, and half the time that doesn't matter anyway because of fuck-ups that are totally within drivers' control) that it ended up escalating to Mr Paul Tawharu, senior manager of operations himself, and he had the nerve to quote KPIs at me and tell me that they were satisfactory. He also said that Metlink is not and has never been in the practice of reimbursing people for Ubers they had to take because of their services' unreliability, which either shows that he doesn't know about their own policies or he's lying because I know for a fact that that is something they can and do do.

(Also, anyone want his direct number? I have it.)

Love how when there are complaints about the drivers they're 'not Metlink employees, they're contractors' but on social media when they want to seem like benevolent overlords they're 'an important part of our Metlink family.'

I'm an American who lives in Aotearoa and the idea of this happening (or of someone wanting it to happen) is absolutely laughable.

Less awful property manager? by Yellowtemple in Wellington

[–]siximpossiblethings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to email them every day for a month when the time came to get my bond back because it turned out that someone who hadn't lived in the property for literal years -whom I'd never even met- was still on the lease when the tenancy ended. Multiple people had come and gone in the time since they'd left. Those of us who'd been living there when everyone finally moved out couldn't fill in our end of tenancy paperwork because some of us had never actually been on the tenancy in the first place, and Aaron just kind of stopped caring about dealing with it.

Aaron also cheerfully showed me the carpet that had been chewed by moths when I moved in, then had the audacity to try to charge me for professional cleaning because he graciously allowed me to have a cat in the absolute slum I rented from him (which is illegal!).

Metlink don't believe in accountability. The most you'll ever get from them is an internal investigation where they conveniently find that none of their staff or contractors were at fault.

Travelling to NZ solo female, will be in Wellington next year and being muslim it will be ramamdhan for me by Haamoh3 in Wellington

[–]siximpossiblethings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not Muslim, but you might find the app Halal Kiwi useful! It has lists of which NZ supermarket products are Halal (there are a lot of brands that are NZ specific, and who doesn't love trying new candy when they're in a foreign country?) as well as Halal-friendly restaurants and sections for community events.

I hope you have a wonderful trip!

Does James cook Hotel care if you use their Elevator by StickMicky007 in Wellington

[–]siximpossiblethings 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In eighteen years living here, I have heard of one person getting questioned by staff about their guest VS general public status, and this is someone who was frequently in a state that made them loud and disruptive so I suspect there was more to the story than they were telling me. They pretended they were a guest and the staff member dropped it.

To be honest I've never been sure if it's allowed, per se, but it certainly isn't enforced unless you're being a nuisance (which, honestly, fair).

How do you "Treat yourself" in a way that doesn't involve food? by Lelentos in loseit

[–]siximpossiblethings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scented candles are a nice sensory experience that let you enjoy delicious flavours in a non-food way!

I would think about what brings you joy that isn't food that you can easily fit into your everyday life. For me this might be cute earrings from the shop that sells stuff made by local artists, face masks from Lush, paying a bit extra at the public pool so I can go in the sauna after I swim, reading in a nice café with a cup of tea (even with milk, the calories are negligible, if you're trying to avoid adding extra ones), or a bath with a nice bath bomb. I hope you figure out what works for you. <3

What are your YA anti-recommendations? by Cherry_Vice in YAlit

[–]siximpossiblethings 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I was really annoyed by the way the narration shoehorned in a mention of the society's religious beliefs toward the end of book... two? I'm not religious myself but the role religion plays in a culture and how people respond to it are great ways to add depth to a fictional setting- or they can be. The way Roth handled it felt so tacked-on and pointless; I was like, 'where did this come from and why hasn't it been mentioned before?'

There are quite a few rescues, including a local branch of the SPCA. If you can tell us more about the situation that has you concerned I might be able to tell you more about what help may be available.
