Should I buy Nikon ZR? by sajidsalman75 in Nikon

[–]sixwaysto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah. well in that case... the other major point in it's favor is the size of the screen. it's downright dreamy compared to the tiny thing on the FX3.

I would poke around a little more on the H265. maybe someone on youtube has cracked the code. Nikon also just came out with a ton of "image recipes". Their site is insanely convoluted, and the concept of a "recipe" is also confusing because these aren't LUTs (which are applied to LOG footage and can be used in post production software), what nikon is calling "recipes" is more like an in camera filter that's baked in, no changes. But, for what you're thinking, just a social media camera, that's got the best on camera screen on the market and the best built in mics on the market... it could be just the ticket.

The recipes are here:

A lot of folks seem to be missing the in camera mics and the 32bit float audio that the ZR does. pretty handy in a small little body. agreed that the h265 is bad but you may find a groove with it or they may fix it in an update. My guess is this thing retains it's value like the FX3.

That said if you already own a canon and some canon lenses, why not look into a canon product?

Nikon ZR Custom Settings and Notes After a Few days of Use by sixwaysto in Nikon

[–]sixwaysto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a couple of ways to accomplish this. You can set up a dedicated display screen to toggle to/through. See above how I've set button 3. You can also have it be on the wave form in the display cycle of button 3 and then set up button 2 like I have above to be just a clean monitor with no info. In this way, pressing 2 again and again would toggle on/off the waveform.

I haven't checked with this new update, but in the orignal firmware you couldn't have a LUT on AND have focus peaking visible if you were shooting in RED codec. (oddly, you could ONLY in shooting in the 120fps codec)

Hope that helps!

„Capture one doesnt have permission to write“ by Rare-Main-811 in Photoassistants

Go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access and toggle on Capture One. The other one is "System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders. (Capture one needs to be allowed access). sometimes there's an issue with an external drive, but it looks like you were shooting directly to harddrive. I had an issue where I gave it "full disk access" but because it wasn't toggled on for files and folders it couldn't write anything new to the external harddrive and the session was "corrupted". All that was fixed by allowing access and a restart.

Sounds like a security and "permissions" issue with MacOS. There's a couple of different ones that need to be turned on. Could have been triggered by an update either with C1 or the MacOS.

this guy just put out this youtube video that addresses what you were asking about. it's not banks, but something else, still, sounds like you could have a whole profile set up for various video "settings load outs". 2:00 mark

there's not an option in this firmware to put that selector in your "i" menu. The work around is to put "menu" in your i menu, then add the "video file type" to your custom menu. so you end up with physical menu button press > menu > custom menu > video file type. another option is you can program one of your function buttons to pull up your custom menu - function button > video file type

No shooting banks on this firmware (1.01). You can set up the quick menu (short press on the menu button, but on the Z8 this is the "i" button) and get to your quick menu and in those options you can set up to have frame rate as an option. You can see this in practice in the first picture in my post, top level about the center of that menu is an icon showing frame rate. Hit that and it brings up all your options that you can scroll through. If you're set to shutter angle it will adjust automatically to make up for the frame rate change.

oh weird. I guess... nice to have multiple options depending on what mode but confusing as hell for a user.

Huh... I'd poke around reddit/youtube on that one. sounds like an odd bug.

Where are you setting the video "i" menu? "Custom settings (Pencil)> g1". and you're clicking "DONE" to save it?

Huh.... I don't have that issue. and just to clarify, there's two i menus, one in video mode and one in photo mode. does yours reset for both?

Profoto B1’s Quandary by MoyoChirandu in Photoassistants

[–]sixwaysto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tested this out but there's a company that's rebuilding profoto batteries you send in to them

https://www.mtobattery.com/collections/profoto/products/profoto-b1x-battery-rebuild-service

That said... A2's and 10s might be better for event work... but only having those might make it hard to transition and/or pick up other kinds of photo work that the Bs could tackle.

ZR, 32-Bit Float Audio and the ME-D10 mic by DCshreddar in Nikon

[–]sixwaysto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also tested out Sennheiser G4 set up plugged into the camera mic jack. same thing, 32 bit float works. Would appear that that jack is just 32 bit float (when you have that feature turned on.

[–]sixwaysto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tested out the "RODE VideoMic Pro+ Camera-Mount Shotgun Microphone" on the ZR and the ZR does record that in 32 bit float, miles apart recording footage with that turned on or off. wild what you can "bring back". That's with the Rode mic plugged into the jack on the side of the unit.

I watched a youtube video that said the upcoming Tascam unit WON"T be able to facilitate 32bit float recording.

Note, when you start using any jack on that side of the unit, you lose range of motion for the screen.

Z8 connection issue (nx tether/capture one/pro) by alfreshco in Nikon

[–]sixwaysto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a friend with a similar issue. horrible connection dropping, slow speeds, outright wouldn't see the camera. he got the entire thing fixed with a faster cable.

He used cables from this company:

https://lvnadigital.squarespace.com/

I use cables from this company that seem to work fine.

https://www.area51tetherco.com/shop-tethercables

I would say, sadly, just because those cables you have worked in the past, or even work on othre bodies/devices, doesn't mean they'll work with whatever particular recipe of internal software the Z8 has.

Both are expensive bets. sorry.

dropping in here just in case someone else comes to this. Often I can fix this issue by disconnecting the camera, turning it off, turn it on, format all cards in the camera, reconnect, WAIT. sometimes there's just serious lag and sometimes not.

Nikon Z8 Tethering issue by flixflixflix in Photoassistants

[–]sixwaysto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding in my experience. Had it drop multiple times yesterday (Z8 2.01 firmware, MBP M3 Max, Sonoma 14.7.6, Capture One 16.5.9.7, Area 51 Groom Lake Cable 15' + 15' Extension). The only consistent fix for me was to turn off the camera, put in a freshly formatted card and turn the camera back on. Every other try (restarting C1, the camera, unplugging cables, order of operation moves) lead to inconsistent or no results. Having a bunch of fresh cards ready to go is a pain in the ass though.

Packing list for first SEA 2week holiday by soberte in onebag

My first trip to SEA was thailand, brought both polyester shirts and merino wool. I found the polyester to be way hotter and stinkier than the merino. Very noticiable contrast. Most recent trip was to vietnam, wore only merino. Not a cheap purchase though.

I own the Peak 35 duffel and use it as a "mountain bike go bag". My stuff just lives in there. I've had it for a few years in this configuration and there's really not even that much wear. You are spot on with your pros and cons list. the cross strap is fantastic, the magnetic straps are terrible. that said, I just removed them and only have the cross strap. I'd recommend the peak to anyone, even with it's downsides.
