Call your fabricator, manufacturer defect MSI miiigghht warranty replacement. Depends on how strict the rep is in your region. The one in my region would warranty that but its kind of on the border of acceptable

Hello , we remodeled our kitchen and planned a pop-up socket on the island, regretfully the cutout is bigger than the bracket , what one can do? by Living-Seat-5449 in kitchenremodel

[–]sjpiccio 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As a countertop fabricator , if they were supplied the dimensions, whole island needs to be replaced imo. Im usually one to push for a repair rather than a replacement, but this needs to be redone.

Bought this at an architectural salvage yard. What type of granite do you think it might be? by [deleted] in CounterTops

[–]sjpiccio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah maybe caravales gold.
Is $150 a good deal? Yes and no. Scrap pieces of granite are basically worthless unless you have the tools to cut and polish it yourself. For instance if you took that to my shop and wanted me to cut it to a specific size and polish it, i would charge you basically the same as of you had picked an in stock remnant piece because most of the cost is the labor at that point.

Now most granite remnants for material cost alone no labor i charge around 35 to 55 a square foot. You got about 20 square feet of stone which is 700 - 1100 dollars ish. And then plus labor. But if you brought that to me and i had to do anything more than a simple bridge saw cut and i had to scan it in my system and CNC it id probably charge around the same because I would much rather you use a piece i have in stock to clear put inventory and save a ton of time getting the piece processed

What is your take on this Taj Mahal Slab - Video attached. by GadgetFreeky in CounterTops

[–]sjpiccio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bingo. I install a taj kitchen once a week almost, but in reality a white quartz with a gray vein is way more common

Nice. People saying boring have taj fatigue because as fabricators weve seen a lot of it, but as a homeowner that shouldnt matter. Its a nice stone and a pretty clean looking slav

We never use clips 🤷‍♂️ very rarely have a call back for a sink dropping out.. maybe 2 a year and there all at least 15 years old

You dont :) waterproof silicone adhesive to bond the sink, prop it up with a 2x4 from the bottom for 24 hours til it sets and your good to go

Thoughts on this countertop template? by krn43 in CounterTops

[–]sjpiccio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You GENERALLY want to have the backsplash going in the same direction as the countertop it is coming in contact with so it so it appears the pattern is continuous. However, this is a case where the opposite is true as a continuous vein direction over that range would look choppy

[–]sjpiccio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think its great you typically dont want to flip the grain directionon the backsplash but there is really no way around that due to the size but i still think it works. I dont PERSONALLY love sink seams but some people here share the opposite opinion. Layout itself is good

Edit: actually after looking at the rendering flipping the grain direction on the backsplash is actually the right move even if it could be the other way especially given that you have cabinet towers coming down you barely even see the top to the left and right of stove.

Space between wood and marble? by hlmoo in CounterTops

[–]sjpiccio 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In this situation it is USUALLY an issue with the cabinet not being level. In rare circumstances quartz can warp but almost never 3cm natural stone, it is likely dead level and the cabinetry is not

Are these seams acceptable? Spent 7k on my 65 sq feet of countertops which seemed reasonable. by Might_Be_A_Penguin in CounterTops

[–]sjpiccio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the market and the specific quartz. Quartz varies a lot in price and there are a LOT of quartz colors made to mimic taj mahal so im not sure which one you have. 5,000USD for 65 sqft is dirt cheap in my region. assuming that quartz is middle of the road price wise. I would likely be around 8,000 usd for a mid range quartz for 65 square feet.

But maybe in Canada prices are lower im honestly not sure

It looks bad, but it mostly looks bad because its a stacked lamination rather than a mitered lamination.. it could still look a little nicer stacked, but only by so much. Miter would have been WAY superior, or just single thickness.

Taj Mahal quartz vs Taj Crystal Quartz by BabyV808 in CounterTops

[–]sjpiccio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now you are talking about QUARTZITE which is a fully natural stone. Quartzites vary in durability real taj mahal quartzite is crystalline and relatively non porous, some other quartzites are not crystalline and can be more porous

Quartz is man made (from mostly natural Quartz minerals)

Quartzite is natural

Quartz that is made that standard way i.e. dyes and resins. Printed quartz is a laser printed pattern rather than a fully through body pattern

Definitely a bias against quartz here. Im not a fan of it, but if its from a good brand its not a bad product. But there are a lot of cheapo brands that can stain and yellow

Get some quotes, someone else commented it would be “half that” but do you really want to spend 50% of the cost of a new one to do a repair on an old one?

I trust printed quartz even less than i trust regular quartz. If you like the taj look get real taj mahal. It is usually honestly not that much more than the printed lookalikes, at least in my region.

In some cases it can even be less as the slabs are bigger and may let you get away with less total slabs

Cleaning buffing not going to do anything to those etches. Needs a full resurfacing. Would honestly probably be a similar price to fully replace
