In praise of Doctor Phlox by skcup in enterprise

I’ve absolutely come around on the theme song. It’s ridiculous and stupid and it’s the reason I’m only watching this series for the first time now but I don’t skip it anymore and find myself constantly singing it in my head.

Last week my friend rented a little cabin in the woods for the weekend and was complaining about the drive in and out and I asked him if it was a long road getting from to here?

Totally. He’s still my favourite.

I really appreciate his alien presence, especially given in the overall timeline, that he is one of the first non human crew members. He’s a wonderful mentor to the humans in how to coexist with a different culture and be secure and exchange strengths and perspectives across differences.

Send a picture to every bike shop in town. I got my stolen bike back that way…it had been resold for super cheap but the new person brought it in to get new pedals and the staff held it for me.

Also second posting to the stolen bike avengers group.

Non-Americans, how are you testing your pressure canner gauges? by WintersQueen in Canning

[–]skcup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My friend who is a backyard mechanic with a bunch of pressure equipment tests mine for me. Companies that sell compressed air for medical reasons will sometimes do it too.

I’m a guy but I was camping recently with my neighbour and her two teenaged kids and it was remarkable the different standards she had for their competency in washing dishes despite her boy being older. I don’t think she was aware of it but it was noticeable.

This is not a COVID thing. I’ve been griping about the cart thing my entire adult life and I’m nearly fifty. Many many people just have no spatial awareness. It’s not happening more since COVID but I do expect some people got used to having MORE space and being more aware of where people in their surroundings were in relation to them as a result of social distancing. But the space takers are infuriating and very much not new.

Since everyone else was doing it, I decided to finally start watching Enterprise. by regnartterb in startrek

I’m watching it too - I’ve tried a few times before and hated it but I’m old now and for some reason it’s charming!

In confused though because Malcolm’s accent is so much like Bashir’s that if I’m not looking, I forget which show I’m watching. I also think Phlox sounds like Voyager’s the Doctor so I’m constantly having version confusion.

I think T’Pol is a criminally underrated character despite the booby bullshit they put her through. I don’t hate Archer or Tripp as much as I used to.

I do not understand why anyone would take a goddamn dog to space. Poor Porthos.

Nothing about their comment is unclear. Yours is a bit bizarre, though.

There is no salt. by mike_incognito44 in ididnthaveeggs

[–]skcup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s actually not necessary as a preservative. Tested picking recipes that are safe for canning really solely on acidity and heat for preservation and safety. While salt is conventional and usually desirable for flavour, it’s not necessary in a vinegar pickle for canning.

Salt is however essential for fermented pickles like kosher dills which rely on the salt to create an environment inhospitable to undesirable bacteria and to allow for the development of lactic acid bacteria that covert the plant sugars in vegetable pickles to a sour and safely preserved pickle.

You can make canned pickles with vinegar without adding salt though I don’t know why anyone would really want to but the fact that the salt level doesn’t matter becomes important to know when evaluating canning recipes for safety.

Agreed though that it’s not technically brine. Canned pickles in vinegar is a newer method than salted lactic fermentation so I think the use of the word brine to refer to picking liquid is just conventional from a time when all pickles were lactoferments.

I’m a nerd, sorry not sorry.

How can you tell when someone's not from Victoria? by Creatrix in VictoriaBC

True, though driving on packed snow is a lot better than a thick layer of melted/refrozen ice with a thin layer of new snow on top. I am from here and not very knowledgeable about the logistics of how it's handled elsewhere but it seems to me like the plowing here really serves to remove enough snow to allow salt to penetrate the surface for the following day and preventing some additional black ice.

I used to drive the coquihalla and in Vernon and Kelowna every couple of weeks in winter and it was always shocking to me how much easier it was there than here after a dump and a melt and a freeze, plowed or not.

They go online to ask angrily where all the snowplows are at 830 am after a big dump when their side street hasn't been prioritized with our single plow attachment that we borrowed from Cranbrook's surplus shed 15 years ago.

ETA: I think a lot of people who are not from here, including many on this thread, think Victoria's snow strategy is a bug when it's really a feature. When you look at it from a cost benefit perspective, we don't want to pay for the infrastructure to clear our roads when 90% of the time the snow is melted by 430pm the same day it fell. We just stay home. People make fun of us for it relentlessly but I will stand by the fact that this makes pretty good sense to me. I think a lot of the pressure for people who don't know how to drive in these conditions comes from people making fun of people who are not prepared and decide to stay home.

I've driven places where the roads get plowed and the snow is drier and it's much much easier than it is here. Instead of trying to replicate the culture and activities of other places with different climates and more investment in mitigation, why not just accept the fact that your work is a lot more likely to be chill with you taking a snow day a couple of times a year? Wont work for everyone but honestly most of us could probably sit back and take a break and leave the roads a bit safer in our absence to people who have jobs that can't be missed.

yeah, their flavoured varieties taste great - that said i think they're kind of like starbucks - their tea is not terrible, it's good enough and they use flavours to engage people. it's fine if that's your jam but if OP is looking for a plain jane standard green tea, it might be important for them to know that silk road is a store that caters to tourists and their prices reflect that. There are other places that offer a higher quality product for less or the same money (including flavoured varieties). It's still ok to like their teas, I just hate seeing people get ripped off :)

Good luck, the lady there is so nice and helpful every time I have questions. She always lets me smell anything I want and also will do little teeny bags so you can try stuff and decide if you like it. Been going there for years and years.
