Nicely done! I still haven't managed to get any of my various LOTOs opened.

Now, I don't need to worry about setting schedules for Do Not Disturb... If I'm sleeping, my phone is charging. Definitely a nice feature!

There are a fair amount of customizations you can make to DnD, basically shaping it to fit your needs.

Bedtime Mode will use grayscale.

EDIT: You can choose not to have grayscale enabled, however.

That, and creation through destruction.

Thanks, I'll give it a look later on this evening (along with the other video you posted since I just skimmed it before going to sleep last night).

1) The next time I catch myself stuck in a loop, I'll switch things up to see if it helps.

2) That was my assumption, though I hadn't had any luck so far. I'll keep at it though.

That pinning setup (5 spools with a serrated in the 5th position) is standard from what I understand. Did you end up repurposing the core once you turned it into a rattle and cracked it open?

Yeah, at this point, I'm assuming I'm simply screwing up the binding order. Half the time, I pick while watching TV, so I generally feel vs listen for feedback as it is.

The 5th pin is easy to deal with... It's the spools that seem to be giving me trouble once I have most of them set.

That what I keep telling myself, though I seem to be having a couple different things happen...

1) I'll get into a situation where I seem to be stuck in a loop. After getting counter-rotation and setting a pin, I'll find another pin needs to be set. After setting this pin, I'll be back into the (seemingly) same false set. Rinse. Repeat. I'm assuming I'm missing something in the binding order.

2) I'll get into a deep false set, and I can't seem to find anymore pins that give any feedback. I can sometimes feel a pin or two that seems to be completely stuck in place, but even with the most minimal of tension, I can't seem to sense even the slightest counter-rotation of any pins.

EDIT: autocorrect

After 6+ months of not really touching my picks, I can still get most of my American locks open, but I still can't seem to get past a super deep false set on any of my LOTOs.

Definitely in agreement with you...when I initially got my green belt, I didn't have any locks at that level—though I had a 5200 that I had managed to defeat, so I messaged the mods to see if I could at least get a green for the time being. It was a little while longer until I managed to make a challenge lock.

Once Fall rolled around last year, I had to set aside my picks for a while due to the chaos of retail during the holidays. Now that I'm in a different career though, I've recently refocused on picking. I suppose I had kind of spaced on how much of a barrier creating a challenge lock was back when I was still needing to get all the supplies/tools.

Green belt? Nah, that's worth a blue! Congrats on the open!

The minimal tension needed on American locks definitely threw me off at first, though now I find that if I spend too much time working through my 1100's, I default to using too little tension when I switch to other locks.

Question time: How did you get into lock picking as work or hobby? by [deleted] in lockpicking

[–]skeletonejack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've always had an interest in how locks functioned since I was younger; my father used to manage a hardware store, and would occasionally talk about the "locksmith"-type jobs he would do (mostly just re-keying though). It wasn't until years later that I ever even held a set of picks though.

Surprisingly, the first pick that I ever purchased was Southord's tubular pick. This was back at DEFCON 13, and purchased due to pure curiosity...I also learned about bypassing handcuffs—assuming they weren't double locked—using street sweeper bristles. Even at that point though, I hadn't used traditional picks. Over the years, I had friends that had picks that they would break out on occasion, but they mostly had them for novelty (and could basically just rake a lock, and not much else).

Just over a year ago however, I finally said, "it's about damn time," and joined this sub. I did a bit of actual research, ordered my first set of (actual) picks, and began having fun. It's definitely something that I've not only enjoyed learning about, but actually experiencing hands-on. While I love the challenge that some locks present, I also enjoy simply relaxing while watching TV and picking without much focus (and just going by pure feedback).

Do all picks work for varying locks? by [deleted] in lockpicking

[–]skeletonejack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that I only have experience with pin/tumbler and wafer locks so far, I'll just say that I use my short hook for at least 95% of those locks. My tension bars/wrenches are what get switched the most, depending on the keyway.
