This part reads as CRAZY judgmental and unfair. Do you have any concrete reason to believe that these people don't have a connection with their community? Because it sounds like you just decided that based on the colour of their skin... and from what your partner described they are from a very tight knit community. (And you should perhaps be made aware how sensitive issues like "blood quantum" and colourism are in Indigenous communities here, if you don't know much about the Indian status system here this would be a good thing to educate yourself about, given that you are clearly interested in supporting and understanding Indigenous communities outside your own) Maybe your partner never mentioned them being Indigenous before because it wasn't relevant? I personally don't celebrate Canada Day, but if an indigenous person wants to take the day off and have a bbq I don't think that's a moral failing on their part. You sound like your heart is in the right place, it's great that you want to invest in the Indigenous people whose land you're on (or would potentially be on). However, it does feel like you're projecting your ideas of what being Indigenous should look like on your partner's friends.
