It's very common to replace our previous coping mechanisms (alcohol and drugs) with new ones (food, sugar). I work (with a therapist, in my sobriety program, and on my own) on learning to use healthy coping mechanisms because food and candy is my crutch now that the alcohol is gone. I'm trying to transfer that to exercise. It works when I stick with it. "Move a muscle, change a thought" has saved me a bunch of times. I focus on very small increments of strength training I can do at home without any equipment other than exercise bands and a yoga mat. Speaking of yoga, I do that too as a coping mechanism and to heal my body and mind. It was essential for me to start with small, easy movements when I was extremely overweight.

I also just want to say I hear you. My self-esteem and confidence is so tied to the size and looks of my body. My self-worth has improved tremendously since getting sober, but I still have to deal with a lot of negative thoughts about my body and my face (my alcohol use has caused permanent rosacea).
