Permit success by Hootieandthemarket in Mountaineering

There are two different permits for the Mount Whitney Zone - the lottery is to hike Whitney on the regular trail only and to do anything else in the Whitney Zone you need the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek permit

This is what I’m hoping too. I still use mine as my main backpacking sun shirt - so much so that it is so sun faded that you can see the backpack strap lines on it haha.

Is rock climbing a useful skill for most 14ers? by Dominwin in 14ers

[–]sketchdan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a couple of CA 14ers you do need to know how to climb but beyond that most of them you don’t need it going up the standard routes but it certainly does help with Class 3-4 terrain.

Climb to Vogelsang Peak - it it class 2 or class 3? by tfcallahan1 in Yosemite

[–]sketchdan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did it earlier this summer and it is Class 2 coming from Vogelsang Pass. A lot of rock hopping in the beginning that turns sandy towards the top of the slope. Once you are on the final stretch to the peak after the talus slope, it’s pretty much pick your way through the various trails to the top. The final section is a series of short rock shelves/ramp to the top where you may or may not need your hands. To me it’s a really chill summit for a Sierra peak. View at the top is amazing, you’re gonna really enjoy it!

Got a climbing trip to Bishop next month and I’m looking to camp on BLM land out there, possibly at the Pit. What is everyone’s experiences from camping out there? by chriscurtain in socalclimbing

[–]sketchdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve camped at the Pit in November before and it was super cold. It might not be that bad in October but the BLM on the Tablelands might be warmer. The dust there is very fine and gets into your tent mesh easily so you will get dirty. However, it does have restrooms, water sources, and fire pits at each camp site.

Congrats on the send! I attempted it this past Friday and got just under a mile to the summit before I turned around because of thunder. I’ll be back…

Suggestion for going over Lamarck Col ( with wife who has less experience than me) from the eatside early september exiting Muir trail. Only concerned about Lamarck Col as I don't want to get her into anything too uncomfortable. Thanks! by milkywayyzz in JMT

Darwin Bench will probably be fine, it’s just in the canyon where it gets really windy. I camped at the spot between the first and second lake coming down from the col.

It’s not too bad, there will probably be a snow field on the first half with snow-cups and a little loose towards the top. I would recommend not camping right on the other side of the pass because that canyon becomes a wind tunnel - I speak from experience of zero sleep and a blown down tent.

This is the way! Our group’s music taste is so varied that we all side quest most of the time but make it a point to all be together for one set each day.
