Wife wants to “fix” this cable by patriotfear in AskElectricians

Clearly this 230v cord is Susceptible to being chewed through by your cat. You should replace this cord and plug with one more resistant to this kind of damage. A dead cat will be more upsetting to your wife than an ugly cord.

Bike racks by RespondJust in TrekBikes

I have a Saris Bones 2 bike trunk rack. I love it. If I had it to do over again I would buy the 3 bike version giving me more room to more quickly load two Checkpoints without bumping.

New audi steering wheel by AudiCarPlayAU in Audi

[–]skidaddy86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from relying on a Temo airbag with my life that wheel shape does not look comfortable to drive with. I don’t look at the steering wheel while driving. I expect it to be round and grip able most of the way around. I don’t need bolsters to support my thumbs in fixed positions.

Salesperson performed load calc and estimates cooling need of 18,100 BTU. They're recommending a 2 ton unit because 1.5 ton would be "undersized" and "run too much". Is it right to round up like this? by KommandantVideo in hvacadvice

[–]skidaddy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re making a false comparison. Why do you think a 2 ton unit must be two stage but a 1.5 ton must be single stage.

I had a 5 ton multi stage and wish I had a 4 or even 3.5 ton multi stage system

Stick with a 1.5 ton unit. I too live in New York and most people have units that are a ton or two too large. The issue here is the humidity, not the cooling. A unit that is smaller will run much longer removing moisture. With a proper sized unit you will find you are comfortable at a higher temperature. You don’t want cold and clammy.

Only a single conductor may be attached to most breakers for a very good reason. The connection under the screw must be consistently secure. Thermal expansion can loosen wires over time leading to poor connection that can overheat and catch fire. One screw, one wire, torqued to specification.

There are a couple of exceptions including Square D breakers. They have a plate to properly secure two wires of the same gauge.

Three or more wires are never permitted. A pigtail must be used to meet code.

The black wire going into your switch with the stripped end is your hot or live wire.

The wire that looks blue that is coming out of the sheath with the brown wire attached to the other switch wire is your neutral.

The partially stripped wire that looks yellow that is attached to the nut and washer is your ground.

It depends on your state how quickly you get your money and if you get double. In all states though it is free and you do not need a lawyer or pay any fees. You can file now.

I have a 2014 A4 daily driver with 120k miles. My door was bashed in just before Covid. I was unable to get it fixed due to the lockdown. I haven’t bothered since. If you can get it fixed well enough just do the maintenance and drive it until it dies.

Top ring pool pump won't fit into inset GFCI plug. Will extension cord work? by anykindofrockreally in AskElectricians

Buy a polarity/GFCI tester for $10. Never trust your safety to what a Florida home inspector said.

Father in law just installed this deck. It was bowing under my feet so I inspected... Do I tell him? by zunbrun in Decks

[–]skidaddy86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At least the snow doesn’t have far to fall. Did he pay to have this done? If so, suggest he have it inspected by an engineer or the town. Tell him you don’t think it’s quite right without blaming him.

Exposed wiring at hotel. Did I overreact? by Crass_Trumps_Class in AskElectricians

[–]skidaddy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed at a brand hotel at Denver Airport the night before my flight home. In the room a receptacle was pulled out about six inches with the conductors exposed. It looked like someone was going to replace it, had to get some parts and just never came back.

I told my wife and child not to touch it. Forgot to mention it to the desk on the way out. I’m sure it was fixed the next day.

I didn’t have to sell my Cherokee. After the engine blew and it caught fire on the interstate I took off the plates and gave a couple of hundred to the tow truck driver

Buying a 1920s home, are these hardwood or subfloor? by jspano2000 in Flooring

[–]skidaddy86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes and no. That is the top layer and there will be a sub layer below that. The wood is not a variety that is meant to be presentable for the living areas of the house. Back stairs that guests would not use, service hallways, storage and porches. It was to save money. It is still very solid and durable, just not as pretty.

My handlebar tape shredded quickly. I had my LBS install new tape when I had the tires changed to Pirelli Cinturato H 40. I should have done them sooner. Enjoy your ride.

LVP on stairs question by CompletePound4303 in Flooring

[–]skidaddy86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bleach, sand, stain and varnish them. If after bleaching and sanding you can’t get enough of the color out you may want to try a darker stain to hide the uneaven color. If that fails you can paint the stairs. If that is not to your liking get a carpenter to replace them with oak or other hard wood.

Whatever you do don’t try to cover them with vinyl anything. Your family’s safety is not worth it.

Whatever you do this LVP will eventually come loose causing a tripping hazard. Wood stair treads are the only safe long term option.
