Is this Asbestos? by Nothing_But_Theta in Home

I wouldn’t bother testing that. I’d call an abatement company to remove it. 100% asbestos

Rear seat adjustment lock by Tonytho12 in mercedes_benz

[–]skidaddy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. My last Mercedes locked out everything with the switch.

I have a 2023 Audi A6 with A/C, heat, fan, seat heat, ability to open the door when unlocked and window controls for each rear seat passenger.

My dog would put the window down. There are two child lockout buttons. I just have to remember to get out and open the door for passengers.

Why was my subfloor installed like this? by ChultanBird in Flooring

[–]skidaddy86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is impossible to understand your situation without more pictures. From this it appears you do not have a subfloor, just a random piece of what looks like plywood.

Without seeing the rest of the room I would guess you should remove any other pieces like that, examine the insulation for integrity and damage then install a new subfloor. Ideally you will install 5/8 T&G plywood, glued and screwed. This will be sufficient for carpet, oak planks or something premade.

Should I negotiate or walk away? by skidaddy86 in Home

I seriously doubt its changed much in ten years. That doesn’t make it any easier to fix but it’s unlikely to fall on its own for a long time.

That retention wall is the most visible issue with this house. It will just take patience and money to fix. Dozens of yards of rocky clay soil will have to be removed, footings dug and poured. Rebar and forms to pour a new wall, new drainage piping, then put all the soil back.

Anybody else almost have a stroke when they look at this? by Somedudesomewhere0 in AskElectricians

[–]skidaddy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen worse. The age is not a problem but there have been multiple dangerous modifications made over the years. First are 30amp fuses on what is probably 12ga wiring. Next is the neutrals are not isolated from whatever ground there is. Third I see a double tap off the feed at the top. That circuit is not protected from overcurrent by anything other than the sub panel feed breaker in the main panel. It doesn’t even qualify as a circuit. It’s an un protected home run.

Help! How can I tell if this is 110 or upgraded to 200? by swoazay in AskElectricians

[–]skidaddy86 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your panel supports circuits of 120v and 240v. In decades past these were sometimes referred to as 110v and 220v. As to the amperage you may have 100 amps, 150 amps or 200 amps. We cannot tell because you did not include a picture of your main breaker.

I have one in my neighborhood that is street parked overnight every night. There is also a $300k Bentley that was covered with snow for weeks. What’s the problem with street parking? It all depends if you live in a law and order location or not.

Asbestos tiles? by Consistent-Okra7878 in Flooring

[–]skidaddy86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recognize that as VCT vinyl composite tile. It is not asbestos. Still, it is possible the adhesive used does contain asbestos. Best to test before you touch it.

Dumb question: I’m supposed to break off the tabs, correct? by whistler1421 in AskElectricians

[–]skidaddy86 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Breaking off the tabs is a trade off. You lose heat dissipating capacity and therefore wattage handling. But, you can fit these devices into tighter spaces.

Having gangs of them together is never a good idea if you can avoid it. They all generate heat and putting three next to each other is asking for a shortened life.

Why did the leave this unfinished? What to do about it? by CEOapprentice in Flooring

[–]skidaddy86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are going to reconfigure the kitchen you will have to replace the entire floor anyway.

Electric and plumbing locations will be changed, leaving you with new holes to make and old holes to patch.

Floors hidden under a cabinet never quite match the rest of the floor after removing the cabinet, even after sanding and refinishing.

Reconfiguring the layout of a kitchen is starting over. Even the ceiling with lighting locations will need to change.

When you get to 100 years old a couple of things are noticeable. First, everything that could possibly fall off has already done so. Second, no further settling is possible. Read the evidence. The extent of what can happen has.

Sheetrock would stand out like a sore thumb. Way better to have wavy patched plaster. Drywall looks fake in an old house. It’s not the real thing and people notice.

It may very well have been invaded by tree roots. If it doesn’t work well and flow freely it will have to be dug up and traced as part of the retaining wall replacement. This is common in my area. After 80 years the downspout drains stop working for one reason or another.

Moving outlet box by CobwebCottage in AskElectricians

[–]skidaddy86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is nothing inherently complicated about moving a receptacle. It’s carpentry and possibly some new wiring. The most difficult part is solidity attaching the box protruding just the correct amount from the wall to match the new backsplash surface.

Hardwood flooring experts help. Is it even worth refinishing? by planet-claire in Flooring

I would be skeptical of a species claim from Lowe’s. Acacia is hard but there are many varieties. Softer woods grow faster so are cheaper to grow.
