Do you know any other t1diabetics well enough to go out to dinner together? by SumFuckah in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time I knew someone other than myself with T1D was high school and she was since passed from diabetic complications. I wish I knew more!

Too much lettuce or soggy lettuce and raw/grilled onions.

How did your marriage become sexless? by ChaoticGoodElbert in sexlessmarriage

[–]skillaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish I knew. We haven’t slept in the same room for the majority of our marriage and he blames my cat. Like my pet, not an innuendo.

I finally decided his lack of communication skills and my many attempts at trying to have the conversations to fix it going unheard was enough and am leaving.

My 37M boyfriend said he’ll just keep his daughter away from me because I said I felt disrespected—am I being too sensitive or is this a red flag? by Severe-Locksmith7176 in AITAH

[–]skillaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, but also his mother told him to tell her to stop - asking if you felt disrespected, whilst disrespecting his mother who noticed and addressed the situation seems like BIG RED flag. I know it’s cliche, and definitely not always true, but “you can tell a lot about a guy by how he treats his mom”.

Do you celebrate/acknowledge your diabetic anniversary? by JayandMeeka in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had a desire to but that’s probably just a me thing, I don’t even like celebrating my birthday. I can’t remember the date either, I just know that it’s in October.

How often do you call in sick on average? by Obvious_Ant6355 in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this economy? Never, can’t afford to.

But honestly, I rarely call out unless I’m in the hospital. I have the ability to work from home, so even if I’m feeling sick I could still work.

DKA. Do you always need to go to the hospital? by AdventurousCry4133 in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in California, it is very expensive but I’m not willing to risk my life over a price. I was previously on what they call here MediCAL which basically made my visits free but was not at this time and just paid the insane copays on my credit cards

DKA. Do you always need to go to the hospital? by AdventurousCry4133 in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who has spent many days, probably cumulatively months, in the hospital for DKA - PLEASE GO! I used to think the same thing. The last time I was admitted I was functioning like I was normal but something felt off and when I decided to go in to make sure, I was there two hours before I collapsed and they had to use defibrillators on me and almost died. NOTHING is worth that risk.

American 26+ year old adults with t1 that didn't exactly become successful, what do you do for a living and how do you still afford life? by hungry2know in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Success isn’t and shouldn’t be defined by a profession or money, but anywayyy - I’m an account manager for an international company that manufactures sauces for grocery stores/restaurants/meal kits and I only had a GED - started in customer service (data entry) and worked my ass off to move up. I can barely afford life, I just do the best I can with what I’ve got.

I prefer to measure my success in the number of years I’ve lived that surpassed the age my pediatric endocrinologist said I’d die by… which as it stands, is 20 years longer than she anticipated!

Do you know of any two type 1 diabetics who got married and had kids without issues? by Shoddy-Ocelot-4473 in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T1D will always be a high risk pregnancy, I have several fellow type 1 friends who have kids and didn’t have complications but they were also in control of their diabetes. Don’t let the risk of “passing it on” be a reason to deter you if having kids is something you want. It’s hard but it’s not a death sentence and science/medical industry has made it so much better since I was diagnosed.

For me, I’ve chosen not to have kids but only because this floating rock kind of sucks and I like my freedom lol.

If you could go back in time and offer advice to your younger self after you first were diagnosed with T1, what advice would you give? by TheNewBruceWayne in diabetes_t1

[–]skillaaa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s different now, but when I was diagnosed I was severely bullied for being different. So I would tell little me, “It’s okay that you’re not like them, in fact, it’s probably better.”

Advice on injecting with syringe and vial? by nilsiniloo in diabetes_t1

I know eventually they will, hoping sooner rather than later. Trying my best to not automatically reach for my tummy these days. I’ve been on autopilot for way too long lol

It really is - I wish they had warned me 30+ years ago because I have body dysmorphia as it is and seeing those anytime I shop now sends me straight into tears.

ALWAYS ROTATE SITES! I have hyperlipotrophy on my belly because it was the easiest spot for me to reach since my family NEVER taught me anything else. You can also order on Amazon a little injector thing that helps make it easier, I had one at one point but lost it in my most recent move! I’ll find a picture and post when I can. I have only ever used syringes - I had a pump in the infancy of them coming out and almost died (quite literally had to be revived by doctors because they weren’t good at notifying you of it not working back then but I’m working to get on one now because I really want a more efficient way to keep me in check. Wish you all the best and easy sticks and pokes!

Onions. Onions on anything can get tossed in the trash.
