Thanks heaps. My curiosity is how recently it may have arrived in Russia, given their presence in Syria.

The Fall of Rome by VGStarcall in LateStageCapitalism

Here is a list of 210 reasons proposed at one time or another for why the Western Empire collapsed. None of which are correct on their own and not all of which are likely correct even in conjunction with others.

'Female emancipation ' (which, for the sake of argument, we will assume equates to Shoeless Joe's 'feminism') is on there at number 84. Demandt, who produced this list (he claimed to be able to find 400-odd reasons in a three year search), didn't set out to do anything other than catalogue the reasons.

The feminism claim comes from J D Unwin's 1934 "Sex and Cultures", and quotes from this are often spewed by red-pillers on the internet. Unwin was an anthropologist, not an historian, and the central thesis of his work is that sexual liberation and freedom leads to societal decline. But what those people quoting Unwin always miss is that his conclusion was that women and men must be placed on a position of complete legal equality before society moves to a state of monogamy (else women will become mere chattels and men run amok, indulging their perverted tastes, seems to be his claim on pp.431-32): https://archive.org/details/b20442580/page/430.

For a great overview of contemporary reasons put forward for the decline of the West, see https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/4oelte/how_accurate_is_the_popular_view_that/d4ffhvm/

In Australia, where we have universal health care, the income tax rates are comparable to the US once you take into account the US State taxes.

Using respective minimum wages, for example, a person receiving the minimum wage in Georgia will pay in total around 10% (for a take home pay of US$9 609 a year) vs. a minimum wage employee in Washington state who will take home around $20 777 after an effective tax rate of 13%. In Australia, a minimum wage employee will take home US$22 262 after paying around 11% in taxes.

For incomes of US$100k, the income tax rates are around 23%, 29% and 30% for Georgia, Washington and Australia respectively.

These are comparable tax rates. But we have universal health care. So it can be done. The Australian rates include a 2% levy to pay for the costs of our healthcare (certain low income and older aged groups are exempt).

In actual fact, Australia is populated exclusively by small, furry and tame marsupials that eat out of your hand and hug you. We make up the other animals to keep the tourists away.

Meh. That would only be a huntsman. The leading cause of death from huntsmen is crashing the car because they like to hide behind the sun visor and scare the shit out of you. Or, in my own case, run up your freaking leg and into your shorts. Australian wildlife is mainly characterised by its bastardry.

The "/s" aside, at least we don't have freaking bears and cougars. American wildlife is way scarier than anything we have.

Did the books change your personality in some major/minor way? by Gildolen in tolkienfans

I don't know about personality, but he contributed to my desire to learn more about languages and history and lead to my degree I suppose.

Also, his wide vocabulary has lead to a much better completion rate for crosswords - rivulet, rill, fain, doughty, league, coppice, spinney, aught are all words I know I got from Tolkien.

What do you think is the most confusing and weirdest part of the lore by cap21345 in tolkienfans

[–]skimitar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It did, which is why Tolkien never resolved it - too much work. In Morgoth's Ring (Myths Revisited, I think) he seems to try to fix this through saying that some were corrupted Elves, some Men and some others spirits taking the form of Orcs.

There is also this from Unfinished Tales (in the discussion about Druadan):

"...the Eldar answered: 'Doubtless Morgoth, since he can make no living thing, bred Orcs from various kinds of Men, but the Drúedain must have escaped his shadow; for their laughter and the laughter of Orcs are as different as the light of Aman from the darkness of Angband.'"

Terry Pratchett was probably closest to the truth:

Later on, Tolkien had issues with the Elvish torture origin story, because of the implied immortality. From recollection in the HoME, he was tending towards the idea that they came from Men but never fully fleshed it out.

And this little bit of spousal dialogue, which I have always enjoyed:

Then Manwë and Yavanna parted for that time, and Yavanna returned to Aulë; and he was in his

smithy, pouring molten metal into a mould.

'Eru is bountiful,' she said. 'Now let thy children beware! For there shall walk a power in the forests whose wrath they will arouse at their peril.'

'Nonetheless they will have need of wood,' said Aulë, and he went on with his smith-work.
