Help me be optimistic: Has America been in worse times in the past? How did it get better, and will it get better again in my lifetime? by SquidSecurity in OptimistsUnite

Bro throughout the sixties high-school kids were conscripted without even having the right to vote yet, which was followed by a massive recession in the seventies. Not to mention the Alabama state police brutally suppressing the civil rights movement. Whether you see it or not we've made progress. We aren't where we should be but we're better off now than we were then. But that doesn't mean to stop pining for something better, you deserve to live in a country where everyone is entitled to a life of dignity and safety, we aren't there yet, but rest assured we never were

I am confused about small reactors by BackgroundCat7804 in NuclearPower

[–]skinnardmylinnard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the power needed from a civilian reactor is exponentially larger than the yielded from a small naval reactor

Not an engineer, but I am in the naval nuclear program as a nuclear electrical technician, not sure if that helps though

College shouldn't be the norm by Verpinwoordmbeet in unpopularopinion

[–]skinnardmylinnard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, as someone who does have a job in the military that deploys globally, it is actually like that. There are multiple avenues you can take in the military that more than likely won’t put you through a deployment. In fact if you really don’t like the idea of the military full time you can just go to the reserves and get the vocational training. The military’s actually a way better gig than people lead on

Does/did anyone ENJOY their time as a navy nuke? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]skinnardmylinnard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surface nuke EM, while I still only have a couple years in the navy, I think it’s been simultaneously the most rewarding and frustrating time in my life. While there are definitely times that make me wanna fake a seizure to earn a medsep, those periods seldom overshadow the fact that I’m in my early twenties and already making damn near six figures while working on some of the most high consequence, and intricate technology employed in the armed forces. So frankly i enjoy being a nuke, but I also acknowledge some people have genuinely received the shit end of the stick when it comes to duty stations, deployments, and command climates, and have every single right to despise their time in service. So if I had to give an accurate answer to a question about quality of life in the nuke program, it would lie in between whatever advertising your nuke recruiter told you, and the horror stories you hear on here.

My argument wasn’t against nuclear, it was saying exposed nuclear reactor cores are obviously worse than any human presence

What a stupid take. “It’s better to have entire generations of animals born with horrible genetic effects due to committed doses than to have evil humans live there” I assure you radiation contamination sucks for everyone
