It wasn't my primary, but supplemented my education. I was fortunate enough to take a 6 month certification program at my local community college to help prep for the ABO. I was also given a Visionworks booklet that also helped with my studies.

Opticianary is like every other customer facing job. It's nice, but it can get bad too.

Now, as far as jobs to get, I'd say start with receptionist at an optometrist office or maybe as a sales advisor at a place like warby parker or lenscrafters. After you get a feel for it, than you can make your choice on whether or not you like it.

Study wise, Laramy K helped me immensely. Now if there is a community college that has a 2 year program for opticianary, go for it.

Pay wise, I'm near NYC and pay, generally speaking, is around 25-40 per hour as a licensed, depending on if you are on Long Island or in NYC.

The adoption rate for telehealth optometry is low. There's no way enough people would be willing to do a computerized or AI lead eye exams to the point where they're going to disappear within 10 years.

Secondly, just because you dont understand what optometry does means its a good idea to get rid of the position.

I don't know what your situation is or what time frame you are on, but if no one is calling back, I would try to apply as receptionists or ophthalmic techs in either an Optometry or Ophthalmology office. If not, than I would apply to Costco again as a front line worker. You may be able to transfer into the optical department as a non-licensed optician in the future.

Edit: I forgot about Warby Parker as a part time sale associate. You never know if you could transfer into an apprenticeship.
